Personnel: Joe Bonamassa (guitars); The Bovaland Symphonic Orchestra (strings); Rick Melick (keyboards); Carmine Rojas (bass guitar); Anton Fig, Bogie Bowles (drums). A child blues-guitar prodigy, New York State singer/six-stringer Joe Bonamassa racked up an impressive solo catalogue as a young adult by incorporating a restless rock edge into his well-honed sound. This 2007 acoustic-oriented outing finds Bonamassa presenting a typically excellent set, with both his passionate voice and dexterous guitar-playing in fine form, particularly on the gritty opener, "Ball Peen Hammer." For his seventh studio album, guitar wiz Joe Bonamassa has chosen to work again with producer Kevin Shirley, who produced the highly successful and huge-sounding You & Me for Bonamassa in 2006. This outing, though, is far from a ditto session, with a much more acoustic feel and a greater focus on Bonamassa's singing, which unfortunately has been generally (and unfairly) overshadowed by his guitar playing. Bonamassa has also stepped up his songwriting (four of the 11 tracks here are originals; the rest are blues and hard rock covers) and cut way down on his clichés, delivering in the process his most varied and impressive album yet. The lead track, a version of Chris Whitley's "Ball Peen Hammer," is an atmospheric gem, as is the title tune, a cover of a song written by Bob Ezrin and Michael Kamen that first appeared on Tim Curry's solo debut album in 1978. Bonamassa's singing on both of these is wonderfully nuanced and shows he can do way more than just shout out blues-rockers. Also worth noting is his Dobro work on a fine cover of John Martyn's "Jelly Roll," and then there are the four originals -- "Dirt in My Pocket," "Richmond," "Around the Bend," and the striking "India" -- which show Bonamassa's continued growth and confidence as a songwriter. There are less of those flashy and jaw-dropping guitar leads on Sloe Gin (rest assured, he stretches out a few times on guitar, though), which is mostly a good thing, since it allows his increasing maturity as a writer and singer to shine through. This is a fine album, and one gets the distinct feeling that an even better one may be lurking just around the bend. ~ Steve Leggett Joe Bonamassa Sloe Gin Songs Sloe Gin Music Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Variety and Spice Joe never disappoints me. He is, in my opinion, one of the best guitarists of this day. His playing is quick and consice, vocals sultry and clear. This CD provides a good variety of the styles he is capable of displaying: rock, blues, and acoustic guitar. Love the bluesey sound of Sloe Gin. Don't leave this one out of your collection. Not what I was expecting Joe is an amazing talent, but this album is not what I was expecting. It feels like a step in the wrong direction...of course that's based on my personal taste in music. Hopefully, Joe's next album will bring up the energy level. Submitted by Patrick (Muskegon, MI) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Different Different but brilliant!!!
I know Joe's music for 3 years now, have all his CD's and DVD's, saw him live 10 times,so I know his musical path quite well.
Sloe Gin is different from earlier CD's but really brilliant. First I thought it was so good like the other CD's, but that is just the meaning of it all. Like Joe himself says: I can make plenty CD's who sound the same with fast guitarsolo's, but I want to do more!! On Sloe Gin his wonderful voice, the acoustics, the electric playing, it all comes together in this MASTERPIECE. The more you listen, the better it gets. It is in my player now for weeks, and it will stay there for a long time. I'm sure.
Good music gets better everyday, everytime I hear something new in the songs. The more I listen, the more I like it.
The song SLOE GIN will be a classic in the future I'm sure. When I die. that's the song on my funeral. It gives me goosebumps!!

Joe's Best Yet I have been a fan of Joe's since his SILT album, back in 2002. I have seen Joe grow over the years. His voice has improved tremendously and he has backed off from the major guitar solos within songs. This album has a bit of every type of music. This would be a good CD for someone who is new to Joe. It has hard rock, rock, blues, and many other types. Definitely worth buying. Seeing Joe live blows his albums right out of the water. Submitted by Bill (New Jersey, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Very Good CD ...but not quite up to prior efforts Joe Bonamassa never disappoints. He is a wonderfully talented player and whether it's a live show or a CD, his work is always fantastic! But the fact is that this CD ("Sloe Gin") and his last ("You and Me") do not deliver the same bite and band performance that his previous CD's like "Blues Deluxe" and "Had To Cry Today" delivered. I believe it has a lot to do with the fact that he moved to L.A. and now uses studio musicians to record his CD's. Nothing against his playing or the musicians that contributed to his last two CD's but he has lost that element that only a truly talented and seasoned "band" can produce. Don't get me wrong, this is a great disc to add to your collection but I am truly missing the feel that his material had with Kenny and Eric! Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Tom Petty (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Mike Campbell (vocals, guitar, bass); Benmont Tench (piano, electric pianos, organ, Chamberlin, Clavinet); Howie Epstein (bass, background vocals). Additional personnel: Scott Thurston (acoustic & electric guitars); Steve Ferrone (drums); Lenny Castro (percussion). Producers: Tom Petty, Mike Campbell, Rick Rubin. Engineers: Mike Campbell, Richard Dodd, Dave Schiffman. ECHO was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. "Room At The Top" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song. Personnel: Tom Petty (vocals, guitar). Although the stripped-down, immediate production of She's the One was reminiscent of Wildflowers, Tom Petty's forays into Lindsey Buckingham-inspired pop turned out to be a passing thing, since Echo, his first full-fledged record with the Heartbreakers since 1991's Into the Great Wide Open, is an extension of Wildflowers, at least in terms of sound and feel. The weird thing is, Echo sounds like a sinewy band recording, but its sentiment makes it feel like a solo record. To be blunt, much of Echo feels like a by-product of Petty's divorce from his wife of over 20 years; even the intoxicating hard rock of "Free Girl Now" has a layer of sorrow and regret. That weary melancholy is the bond that keeps Echo together, bridging the gap between the ballads and the rockers, providing an emotional touchstone that makes the record more than just another Petty record. Then again, the music on Echo manages to sound like every other Petty album, yet it stays fresh. Petty, Mike Campbell, and Rick Rubin (along with some help from George Drakoulias) keep the spirit of Wildflowers alive by keeping the production uncluttered, direct, and muscular -- which just reveals what a strong, versatile band the Heartbreakers are. And while there are no surprises, Petty once again delivers an album that ...

| | Angel Where Have You Been? CD (2005)
Sloe Gin
$18.99 On some occasions, ultra-busy people in the music industry -- perhaps A&R reps or publicists, perhaps journalists and critics -- will hear only one song on an album and assume they know everything there is to know about the artist. But first impressions can be deceiving; they certainly are in the case of Angel Rissoff's Where Have You Been? This 2005 release gets off to an exuberant start with the opener "Where You At?," a jump blues offering with a '40s/early-'50s-type approach. Listening to "Where You At?," it would be easy to categorize Rissoff as a jump blues shouter with a fondness for Louis Jordan. But "Where You At?" doesn't tell the whole story where Rissoff is concerned; ...
