Yes-like in every possible aspect, Chris Squire's Fish out of Water is an album that's typical of his band's progressive formula: softened keyboard extensions à la Patrick Moraz, steady yet atmospheric percussion work from Bill Bruford, and a smattering of flute and saxophone that accompanies a small orchestra, which includes effective horn and harp work. Squire's guitar playing is standard, coming to life the most on "Silently Falling" and "Lucky Seven," with the former boosted by a rather dazzling synthesizer solo from Moraz. Even though there are few surprises laid out on the album's five tracks, the elemental composition of pure '70s progressive rock is strewn across each song from start to finish. Squire even sounds like Jon Anderson, especially on "Hold out Your Hand," and each of the song's melodies cater to Squire's vocal ascent. Fish out of Water harbors some firm instrumental and vocal cross-breeding while remaining well within the prog rock norm. ~ Mike DeGagne
Originally released in November 1975, this album is Squire's first and only venture outside of Yes. This remastered deluxe expanded edition adds a DVD containing promotional video clips featuring the London Symphony Orchestra. Also included is an interview with Chris talking about the album with a track-by-track synopsis. A bonus track has been added to the CD.
Personnel: Chris Squire (bass guitar); Nikki (vocals); Jimmy Hasting (flute); Mel Collins (saxophone); Andrew Pryce Jackman (electric piano); Barry Rose (organ); Patrick Moraz (bass synthesizer); Bill Bruford (drums).
Audio Remasterers: Robert M. Corich; Mike Brown.
Chris Squire Fish Out Of Water Songs Fish Out Of Water Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) Chris Has Too Much Time On His Hands I can see why Chris Squire kept putting off releasing this CD/DVD. Although the sound quality is an upgrade from the original CD and the long interview with Chris Squire gives alot of insight into this masterpeice of music, The "videos" of "Hold Out Your Hand" and "You By My Side", are worn and out of focus. All during the songs, Chris' face is in so much darkness, you can't make out who he is, until the camera pulls back. It's a shame. I was really looking forward to owning this video that I had seen in the 70's. I think Chris was reluctant to include this awful video, due to his perfection in muscianship, but was forced to release it by his record company.
All in all, I think Chris just had alot of time on his hands during the Yes hiatus, and thought he could make a few extra bucks by putting out this remastered CD.
I think Chris should have channeled his energy into making a new solo set, instead, as was mentioned in the DVD interview. Submitted by aqobg (Prescott, Arizona, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Greatly Improved Release The original CD release of this album (Wounded Bird) was muddy and did not do this album justice. This release, while not perfect, is probably as good as we'll ever see barring an SACD/DVD-A or HDCD release.
I do agree wth the earlier opinion that this is the BEST of all the Yes solo albums. This is a must own for all bass players who have any sense of history and technique. Submitted by A > 35 Year Yes Fan (Texas, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Chris Squire is at his best I bought this album when it was released in 1975 and it soon became one of my favorite records. I was thrilled when it was released on CD format.
Everyone seems to agree that this was the best of the solo albums that were released by the members of Yes in the mid to late 70's.
The songs on this album are just fantastic. Very melodic, well written songs with great lead/bass guitar playing and some great orchestrated sections.
Chris Squire does what he does best, great vocals and unbelievable bass playing.
Interesting to note: there is almost no electric guitar on this CD. Unusual for a rock record.
This CD is a must for Yes fans, and bass guitar players. Submitted by Erv (Abbotsford B.C. Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Underrated 70's Masterpiece After years of being an import only item in the US, and often priced in the $30 range, it's about time this was released on CD in the USA. Squire's musicianship is nothing short of breathtaking here. Yes fanatics often say that this is the best Yes solo album. I agree. The bonus track is pretty much a waste of time; the edited version of "Lucky Seven" from the Atlantic single. But still, this album should be in every Yes fan's collection. Actually it should be in every bass player's collection. My favorite track is "Silently Falling", but I love them all. The DVD is a nice touch. Carnivorous, alcohol-loving Rick Wakeman was always at odds with the health-food mindset of the other Yes members, though his brash pomp was at the heart of their sound. When he was replaced by Patrick Moraz (late of '70s prog obscurites Refugee and Mainhorse), it freed the band up to dive headlong into the ethereal, spiritually oriented themes that had always ...
