Bob James was far from predictable in the 1990s, when his albums ranged from the embarrassing Playin' Hooky to the excellent Straight Up (an unexpected return to straight-ahead jazz) and the enjoyable pop-jazz offering Grand Piano Canyon. Drawing on pop, jazz and new age, The Swan is a bit lightweight...on the whole, but does have its moments. The CD's most substantial tunes include "Prospero" and "Ensenada Madness," which has a Spanish flavor and shows an awareness of the writing that Chick Corea did with Return To Forever... ~ Alex Henderson
Bob James was far from predictable in the '90s, when his albums ranged from the embarrassing Playin' Hooky to the excellent Straight Up (an unexpected return to straight-ahead jazz) and the enjoyable pop-jazz offering Grand Piano Canyon. Drawing on pop, jazz and new age, The Swan is lightweight and sleep-inducing on the whole, but it does have its moments. The CD's most substantial tunes include "Prospero" and "Ensenada Madness," which has a Spanish flavor and shows an awareness of the writing that Chick Corea did with Return to Forever. Unfortunately, too many of the other songs end up sounding like bloodless Muzak. Despite having a few bright spots, The Swan really isn't worth the price of admission. ~ Alex Henderson

Swan album
$15.55 One of the earliest recordings to embody what would come to be known as the ECM sound, Red Lanta is a series of piano/reed duets that have a Scandinavian starkness offset, somewhat unfortunately, by a soft sentimentality that verges on kitsch. At the time, Garbarek was vacillating between ...

| | Oscar Peterson Solo/Live CD (2002)
Swan music CDs
$8.35 Recorded live in Baalbek, Lebanon and Amsterdam, The Netherlands between August & November 1972. Includes liner notes by Ernie Rideout.
Two previously unreleased 1972 solo concerts are compiled on this Oscar Peterson CD. The first, recorded in Lebanon, sounds as if it may have been recorded for broadcast. While the condition of the instrument provided for him is not quite up to par, Peterson, like his mentor Art Tatum, quickly sizes up the capabilities and limitations of this piano and makes the most of it with a stunning interpretation of "Yesterdays," followed by a romping stride through "Makin' Whoopee." "Take the 'A' Train," "Blues of the Prairies" (from Canadiana Suite), and "Body and Soul" are also worth comparing to other renditions recorded by this giant of the jazz piano. Fortunately, Peterson has a better instrument on hand for his Amsterdam performance. Although the hall seems to have a bit of a cavernous sound to it, the pianist isn't distracted in the least. His blazing takes of "Autumn Leaves" and "Sweet Georgia Brown" are breathtaking, while a delicate "Here's That Rainy Day" is garnished with occasional intricate runs. Perhaps ...
| | Steve Nelson Fuller Nelson CD (2004)
Swan songs
$14.49 At this juncture of the vibraphonist's career, Steve Nelson is mostly known for his tenure with the Dave Holland Quintet and this mellow and conventional session might surprise many. It is, however, the logical follow-up to Full Nelson with which it shares the same mood and personnel. Pianist Kirk Lightsey and bassist Ray Drummond are exceptional musicians and, unfortunately, this rather lethargic session is not the best showcase for their respective talents. The musicians' lack of histrionics is such that repeated listening is necessary to find the few nuggets. The program mostly consists of standards and Nelson originals. The best tracks are, however, the two pieces contributed by Lightsey. "Heaven Dance" is arguably one of his best compositions and "Laila in Blues" benefits from a beautiful ...
| | Fred Hersch Night & The Music CD (2007)
Swan album
$12.59 His first trio album since the '90s, Night & the Music finds journeyman jazz pianist Fred Hersch, along with bassist Drew Gress and drummer Nasheet Waits, delving into an atmospheric and intimate mix of originals and standards. Hersch has always been a tasteful, harmonically adventurous, and deeply emotive musician, and that is certainly the case here. As he states in the liner notes, seven of these songs are first takes, and not surprisingly a sense of spontaneity and sensitive group interplay permeates the album. To these ...

$30.19 | | Charlie Parker CD (1972) Remastered
Swan CD music
$9.79 These poorly recorded live Charlie Parker dates were captured in 1948 and 1950 and were originally released as two separate LPs, Bird on 52nd Street and Bird at St. Nick's. The personnel for the 1948 gig included a fledgling Miles Davis on trumpet, Duke Jordan on piano, Tommy Potter on bass, and Max Roach on drums, while the 1950 date has Red Rodney on trumpet, Al Haig on piano, Roy Haynes on drums, and Potter again on bass. There's little doubt that these were hot nights for both units, and Parker's solos, particularly on a smokin' "Confirmation" from the 1950 St. Nick's date, are often nothing short of amazing, but unfortunately the fidelity here is awful, bordering on unintentional white noise, and the poor sound quality, which still can't quite mask the power of these performances, makes listening to these tracks more frustrating than fruitful. These sides are certainly ...
