Like Devendra Banhart, Christopher Denny's quavering voice sounds otherworldly, as if it's emanating from an old Victrola placed in storage circa 1911. However, the musical landscapes the Little Rock singer-songwriter lays down come from a moment lingering somewhere between Dylan going electric and the mid-1990s ascent of alt-country. The time-tripping Denny unveils his strange brew on his sparse, disarming debut, AGE OLD HUNGER. Compositions like "Gypsy Into a Carpenter" and "Goin' Out" recall Tim Hardin with their folk-poet-on-the-prairie sincerity. His effortless shifts from verse to harmonica (and back again) likewise echo the ease of his lyrical flow.

Although Scott McCaughey pays his bills as a loyal R.E.M. sideman, the longtime Young Fresh Fellows frontman's Minus 5 project has allowed him to explore his fundamental pop/rock leanings with colleague Peter Buck on albums like 2001's acclaimed Let the War Against Music Begin. Recorded in tandem with that set, I Don't Know Who I Am -- a limited-edition disc reportedly restricted to a pressing of just 2,000 copies -- is far darker and more experimental, as evidenced by the set launcher, "There Is No Music." I know what you're thinking. You're thinking "Hey, I don't recall there being a big budget action movie blockbuster named "PAINT". Just what these guys trying to pull anyway?" You're right of course; there is no movie "PAINT". PAINT is an original band from Denver, Colorado who thought it would be fun to make their debut release a mock-soundtrack. Fans of the Soundtrack genre themselves, PAINT wanted to make their album as close to the real thing as possible, given the obvious set back of not having a real movie to base it on. They've included a theme song, specially written to be the opening track of the CD; they've included "dialogue tracks" from the fake movie; they even recorded an "end credits theme" which has out-takes from the dialogue track recording sessions. They went so far as actually film scenes from the "movie" from which to take still shots for the CD package. The end result is a recording that looks and sounds so much like a movie soundtrack, it often ends up in the wrong section at record stores."It's true. We have to go into stores that carry our album and take them out of the "Soundtrack" section and put them in the "Local Band" section."
