| | Barry Keenan My Brain CD Barry Keenan Discography of CDs
“My Brain” is the new release from Los Angeles based singer-songwriter Barry Keenan. From toe tapping, catchy melodies to the darkness and pain brought on by living life to the fullest, Keenan’s songs tell the tale of human existence, never loosing sight of the hope we all hold within and the growth in healing old wounds. Keenan views this release as his “stripped down” sound, but one listen tells a different story. Having grown up with the Beatles and having been heavily influenced by their sound, Keenan’s songs speak in Lennonesque life narratives. Heartfelt lyrics call for the listener to connect with body, mind and spirit as they bask in the light of an instrumental tapestry of Keenan’s own creation. Having served as Artist, Engineer and Producer on “My Brain”, Keenan supplies all the instrumentation and vocal harmonies. His crisp production values provide a top quality canvass for Keenan’s own poetic prose. His left and right brain functions work in tandem like a cranial “Simon & Garfunkel” songwriting team tucked away in his psyche, each side simultaneously fueling the other, delivering his well-crafted compositions. As a singer-songwriter Keenan played the coffeehouse and pub circuit building his repertoire to include an array of well received original compositions. As his writing matured he recorded several solo outings. Though they were well received by the press and other musicians, a recording contract eluded him. Keenan signed several publishing deals including one with Peer Southern and another with Warner Chappell Music Publishing. He even held a recording contract with A&M records, albeit short lived. Keenan supplied songs and his production prowess to the soundtrack of The Jean Claude Van Dame film “Kickboxer”. Still he had no product of his own on the market… Years later, while playing the rock circuit in Los Angeles, Keenan finally landed a label deal with his band “Invisible Poet Kings”. Their song “Clean White Shirt”, a Keenan/Palmer composition, became a most added song on Sirius Satellite radio and his CD a top selling regional disc. On the cusp of receiving accolades he’d worked so many years to achieve, his label’s distributor filed bankruptcy followed by the closing of his label when several of its partners left. They say every cloud has a silver lining… “My Brain”, the latest Barry Keenan release has been four years in the making. Listen closely and I think you’ll agree the wait has been worth it. My Brain music CDs
$13.29 LINER NOTES for BLOODSHOT (by Brian Smith)WHEN IT RAINSThe starting point of this song was a practice where Bruce & Mike got locked into a violent bass and drum tussle that eventually became the verses of this song. The next development was when I was walking down Oxford Street on a cold, grey, winter afternoon just before Christmas, and the words ‘gallery of grotesquerie’ sprang to mind. The narrator is a cowardly mix of Pinkie from Brighton Rock and Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver (inspiring the (misappropriated) title).BELLYDANCERJust about the oldest MINX song that there is - inspired by some half-heard background music seeping out of a strip club in Japan. The chords are ‘Lay Lady Lay’ played wrong.FLESH BLOOD & BOTTLE This is the only song like this by MINX - a gift from the god of dreams. I woke up in the middle of the night and, before the memories evaporated, scurried into the toilet with my dictophone (so as not to wake the family) to record the two bits of melody that became ‘The world would be so nice...’ and ‘They made me do things I never wanted to...’ This song took a lot of work to work out and we can still get it wrong now if we try hard enough. The lyrics are tenuously inspired by John Lydon’s descriptions of Malcolm Maclaren.SOMEHOW SOMEDAYA love letter to the Ramones, written just after Joey Ramone died. Shame that it took the death of 3 of them before journalists stopped playing follow-my-leader and saying that they were shit. Now all they have to do is to think for themselves and realise what a great LP ‘End of the Century’ is.RUBYNext door to the house where my cousin Dave used to live there was an overgrown, lifeless house where a widow lived alone. I only ever saw her whenever we had to retrieve a ball or a plane from the weeds that had strangled her garden - peering out from an unlit sitting room. At least, that’s how I remember it. She was probably really lovely to Dave - gave him pocket money and sweets and took him to Chessington Zoo - but I hope not. I did my utmost to wreck all the mood and the beauty of the song with a crap punchline at the end of it.HOW TO GET ON IN LIFEThis song never really sounded very satisfying until we finally recorded it. One of many songs that came out of a weekend getaway that we spent practising by the seaside in Chiba. ...
