I'm Alive songs
$12.65 (MP3 Available for Download) Michael Brecker is at the top of his game on TWO BLOCKS FROM THE EDGE. His assembled quintet is under continuous direction from their leader with sometimes no more than a subtle inflection from his powerful horn. Displaying his legendary freight train ('Trane?) chops and razor sharp tone is natural for Brecker, but it's his strength as a bandleader that shines through on this disc. Even with distinguished cohorts like Joey Calderazzo (piano), James Genus (bass), Jeff "Tain" Watts (drums) and Don Alias (percussion) on board, it is clear that Brecker is steering the boat. His trademark muscular style and quirky twists and turns permeate the proceedings.
Some creative composition is evident, with Brecker and Calderazzo taking the majority of the writing credits. ...

| | Rick Springfield Shock/Denial/Anger/Acceptance CD (2004)
I'm Alive MP3 Album
$10.45 Long before Rick Springfield was a soapie star on American television or riding the U.S. charts with the pop/rock of "Jessie's Girl" and "Don't Talk to Strangers," the Australian-born heartthrob played rock & roll with a variety of bands in his country of origin. The most successful of those outfits, the Zoot, scored a hit in 1969 with a heavy'n'gritty version of the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby." At times during Shock/Denial/Anger/Acceptance, you can hear Springfield digging down to those rugged roots. The pop sensibilities are still intact, but from the opening bars of the first track, "Perfect," the guitars are tougher and Springfield's voice huskier than many fans might recall. The cover of the Easybeats classic "I'll Make You Happy" would, on paper, look like a tired choice by an artist who's a song short, but when the ultra hard rock showers down like apocalyptic rain, it's clear that it works. But even that seems tame compared to the nu-metal lurch of "Jesus Saves," which would be appropriate music for grinding bones to make bread. S/D/A/A also shows a seriousness of subject matter and attitudinal toughness that wasn't part of Springfield's heyday persona (to wit: "Jesus saves white trash, baby, like you"). Still, it's not all blood and thunder -- more like lace and whiskey. "Will I?" is a little in the "Jessie's Girl" vein but lacking the hooks, "God Gave You to Everyone" follows suit but the guitars haven't a drop of sweetness to them, "Alien Virus" is a jazz-injected acoustic treat, and "Eden" ...
| | Jack Blades CD (2004)
I'm Alive music CDs
$9.75 (MP3 Available for Download) Multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and former Night Ranger and Damn Yankee Jack Blades has had a lucrative post-'80s career. A capable tunesmith in the industry, Blades has penned material for Aerosmith, Roger Daltrey, and Cher, as well as a reunited Night Ranger and a record with frequent collaborator Tommy Shaw. A great many aging rockers put out solo albums for all the wrong reasons -- money, midlife crisis, a misguided sentiment of fan obligation -- but a select few do it simply for the love of music. Jack Blades belongs in the latter category, and the 11 surprisingly solid tracks on his self-titled debut are a welcome surprise. Opening with the bright, melodic "Shine On," Blades unleashes an arsenal of hair metal soldiers -- Shaw, Neal Schon, Great White's Michael Lardie, Warren DeMartini of Ratt, and his former Night Ranger cohorts Kelly Keagy, Brad Gillis, and Jeff Watson -- to flesh out brutal rockers ("We Are the Ones"), power ballads ("Alone Tonight"), and rock anthems ("To Touch the Sky") with supreme pop/rock acumen. Schon is instantly recognizable on the opening notes of "Sea of Emotions," and Blades does a convincing Steve Perry on a track that wouldn't have seemed out of place on Journey's Escape. However, the veteran's not content with simply re-creating his ...
