Bananarama followed up their hit-laden True Confessions, which spawned their international chart-topping version of "Venus," with 1987's Wow! True Confessions witnessed the emerging role of Stock, Aitken & Waterman as the trio's producers -- Wow! was wholly assembled by the hitmaking team, which was also responsible for hits by Rick Astley, Kylie Minogue, Dead or Alive, Donna Summer, and countless others. This album is, therefore, a straightforward 1980s dance set, with several songs that went on to become international hits. The only track from this set to make the U.S. Top Ten was "I Heard a Rumour," a sassy, joyous single just as infectious today as when first released. Also included is the sleek, lip-smackin' disco hit "I Can't Help It," the engaging, European chart-topper "Love in the First Degree," the single "I Want You Back," and an extended mix of their version of the Supremes' "Nathan Jones." Some of the non-hits pale in comparison to the singles, among those the dated, 12" version of "Some Girls"; the 12" version of "Strike It Rich," which, at some points, resembles an inferior version of "I Can't Help It"; and "Bad for Me," which unintentionally highlights the trio's vocal limitations. The debut release by Yo La Tengo captures the group in their most raw and ragged incarnation. Guitarist Kaplan was working as a sound-man and rock critic when his basement jam sessions with his drummer girlfriend Georgia Hubley (later wife) inspired him to get a band together. The inner sleeve includes the original ads they placed in the Village Voice looking for a guitarist and bassist whose influences included Love and Mission of Burma. While these influences are certainly present in these 15 songs, the most obvious influence is that of the Velvet Underground. Kaplan's speak-singing style of vocalization, the scratchy rhythm guitar and the solid, minimal drumming all recall the Velvets aesthetic. Produced with stark minimalism by former Mission of Burma bassist Clint Conly, RIDE THE TIGER consists mainly of straightforward, yet edgy rockers like "The Cone of Silence," although "Alrock's Blues" goes in some unexpected directions. "The Empty Pool" recalls the jangle and jungle beat of the Feelies, another New Jersey outfit from the same era. Lata Mangeshkar is either the most-recorded or the second most-recorded artist in history, depending on which account you read. And if she does fall into the second slot, that's only because her equally renowned sister, Asha Bhosle, has been in the same business for nearly as long as Mangeshkar. That business is Bollywood -- the prolific Indian film industry -- and the two women (both still alive albeit working on a more limited basis as of 2006) each cut an estimated 20,000 songs or more, in a number of languages, to feature in Indian movies beginning in the '40s. Mangeshkar and Bhosle are known as playback singers, and the music they perform is called filmi sangeet.
