Live In London CD music
$17.19 Recorded in 1977, 1980, 1996 and 1999. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott.
While the album's title is deceiving -- all but five of the 18 tracks on this double disc originate from the '90s, and 11 of those are from the same show -- this is an adequate, well-recorded document of both the original and re-formed versions of Foghat running through their established repertoire. It also works as a tribute to Lonesome Dave Peverett, the group's lead singer and primary songwriter, who died of cancer in February 2000, about a year after the most recent recording here. Since the band hit their peak in 1977 with their first live recording (a 1977 version of "I Ain't Got You" is this disc's oldest, tightest, and most succinct performance and might even be an outtake from that album), this can't help but be a retread. Still, the group retains most of their original lineup and their sweat-stained boogie-blues remains energetic enough, even though at over two hours, this is a bit much for all but the most dedicated. Extended versions of "Slow Ride" (at nine and a half minutes), "Chateau Laffite '59 Boogie" (nearly 15 minutes), and "I Just Want to Make Love to You" (which clocks in at a whopping 16-plus minutes) will tax the endurance of anyone who wasn't at these shows, and even some who were. Rod Price is a talented slide guitarist, but when he lays into one of his lengthy, gritty solos, a little goes a long way and most of them overstay their welcome. Regardless, ...
| | Ted Nugent Double Live Gonzo! CDs (1978) Import; Remastered
Live In London music CDs
$18.59 If you were a male teenager and a heavy metal fan back in the late 1970s, chances are your record collection included well-worn copies of two live albums--Kiss's ALIVE and Ted Nugent's DOUBLE LIVE GONZO. Both solidified each artist's standing as arena-headliners, as their concerts sold out due to their high-energy, entertaining live shows.
DOUBLE LIVE GONZO also marked the last Nugent album until 1982 to feature singer/rhythm guitarist Derek St. Holmes, who was a major musical contributor to Ted's solo success. A consistently riveting listen from beginning to end, individual standouts include amped-up versions of such classic Nugent rockers as "Just What the Doctor Ordered," "Stranglehold," "Great White Buffalo," and "Cat Scratch Fever."
As exciting as they were, Ted Nugent's first three albums lacked the sonic punch in the gut of his outrageous live performances, something readily proved by 1978's classic Double Live Gonzo! Both Nugent and his band are in top form, yielding a fierce performance of their numerous mid-'70s classics. Mega-hit "Cat Scratch Fever" makes an obligatory appearance, but it's the songs from Nugent's self-titled debut which truly stand out. "Just What the Doctor Ordered" is damn near perfect, and the band really clicks on extended jams through "Motor City Madhouse" and the fantastic "Stranglehold." A consummate ...
| | Glenn Hughes Hughes/Thrall CD (1991) (Import) Bonus Tracks; United Kingdom
Live In London songs
$20.39 Glenn Hughes is the former bassist of Deep Purple and Pat Thrall was voted Best New Talent of 1980 by Guitar Player Magazine.
The fruit of a one-off collaboration between ex-Deep Purple bassist/singer Glenn Hughes and journeyman guitarist Pat Thrall, Hughes/Thrall is full of the energy of early-'80s rock. With lyrics like "You got the power/Turn on the light" sung in best Ian Gillan fashion and buoyed by relentless grooves and Thrall's virtuosic guitar, this album is an overlooked gem. Thrall's use of the guitar synthesizer is very interesting. Throughout the album, he combines the muscle of hard rock with the textures of post-punk and new wave, as if Andy Summers were sitting around jamming with Eddie Van Halen. Take, for example, "Beg, Borrow or Steal." The verse is pure new wave, with its straight-eighth synth chords, but it soon gives way to the sleazy rock of the chorus. Much of this sound may in fact trace its origin to Queen and Rush, but listening to Hughes/Thrall in its historical context places it firmly in the same territory in which Billy Idol was to have so much success. The performances by the two leaders are fantastic. Hughes' voice and bass playing are in fine form, and Thrall exhibits a healthy dose of Allan Holdsworth in his playing. The mix, handled by none other than Andy Johns, tends to bury Thrall's guitar a bit, but the drums and bass sound great for an album from this period. This is aggressive ...

Live In London music CDs
$11.59 You have to give these guys credit: no one can tell them that ska-punk is over. On their sixth album and 16 years into their musical career, Mustard Plug are still sticking with the verities: sharp horn charts, big and crunchy guitars, vocals that are more enthusiastic than tuneful (though still fairly tuneful) and lots of gleefully skanking backbeats. "Gleeful" may not be not the first word that comes to mind on listening to these songs, though. ...
