Giant Sand Center of the Universe CD (1992)
Pillars of the Earth Giant Sand's ninth album represents a new peak for this fine and prolific band. Led by Howe Gelb and based in Arizona, the band roams freely between raucous, loud rock & roll and country-tinged balladry. There are definite parallels between this band's work and the work of Neil Young, especially his more sprawling efforts with Crazy Horse.
CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE is made up of some of Gelb's best songs. There's the cheerful and popish "Milkshake Girl," followed by the gorgeous "Stuck." The latter song melds a churchly bearing (complete with swelling organ parts) with a casually honest first-person narrative. The band plays ...
