Charlemagne Palestine is one of the original minimalists in the music's short history. Because he chose a parallel career in the field of visual arts, and the comparably few recordings he's made, Palestine is not nearly as well-known as Philip Glass, Steve Reich or Terry Riley (whose music resembles, somewhat, his own), who have each made grand music out of repetition. Hopefully, that will change--this disc is right up there with Riley's SHRI CAMEL and RAINBOW IN CURVED AIR and Brian Eno's DISCREET MUSIC as a minimalist classic. Palestine, on organ, lays down what seems, superficially, to be one long sustained drone. But over time, the "drone" seems to have overtones, and a small but significant "progress." The effect is soothing, in a vaguely hypnotic fashion, yet it's not merely "ambient." The music draws you IN to a timeless world where you can see the beautiful geometry of snowflakes forming.
