Andrew Shue and Elisabeth Shue star in this $2.8 million-grossing movie about a girl who wants to play for the all-boys varsity soccer team. Bonuses: commentary, documentary. Academy-Award nominated actress Elisabeth Shue (LEAVING LAS VEGAS) is known primarily for her wide-ranging film work. But Shue was also a pioneer of sorts in the 1970s as a teenage soccer player who helped pave the way for girls to play high-school soccer. GRACIE is loosely based on Shue's life in suburban New Jersey, and stars Carly Schroeder (FIREWALL) as Gracie Bowen, a woman with a passion for soccer. But Gracie is overlooked by her domineering father (Dermot Mulroney), a former soccer star who feverishly coaches her three brothers, mostly focusing on the oldest sibling, Johnny (Jesse Lee Soffer). Johnny is the captain of Columbia High's soccer team and Gracie's biggest supporter and mentor, but his superstardom is tragically ended when he dies in a car accident. Since her high school does not have a girls' soccer team, Gracie decides to honor her brother's legacy by trying out for the boys' team, hoping to take her brother's place. Appalled by her outlandish suggestion, her family does not support her dream, and as a result she becomes reckless and defiant, hanging with the wrong crowd and neglecting her studies. Gracie's father recognizes what they need to do to get her back on track, so he coaches her full-time while also appealing to the school board to let her try out for the boys' team. Unfortunately the stakes are high for Gracie to prove herself to her potential coach and teammates, who pummel her with endless ridicule and harassment.
GRACIE is not only an inspirational movie for female athletes of all ages, but also an endearing family film. The movie is dedicated to the memory of Will Shue--the late brother of Elisabeth and Andrew Shue, who both produce and appear in the film. It was co-written by Andrew and Academy-Award winning director Davis Guggeheim (AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH); Guggeheim also directed the film and is Elisabeth's husband. $34.55 Adapted from Frank Miller's graphic novels, SIN CITY is Robert Rodriguez's striking film noir infused with fantasy, taking place in a world where it is eternally nighttime and everything is drenched in rain and violence. Using a unique combination of silvery black and white digital photography with occasional flashes of bright color for dazzling punctuation, Rodriguez employs green screen techniques and paints a backdrop around each scene, using Miller's co-direction as his cue to match the original setting as closely as possible. Three stories weave together, occasionally overlapping. With lines delivered flatly in the hard-boiled style of Raymond Chandler, these tales are about crime, love, loss, and being preternaturally tough. In the most caustically dramatic segment, Mickey Rourke plays the fearlessly lovestruck Marv, a trenchcoat-clad beast who falls in love with prostitute Goldie (Jaime King) only to find her murdered by a demonic cannibal (Elijah Wood). In another segment, Bruce Willis plays Hartigan, a rogue cop with a "bum ticker" whose goal in life is to save Nancy (Jessica Alba), an innocent stripper, from a murderous rapist (Nick Stahl). The third segment stars Clive Owen as a detective caught between murdered cop Jackie Boy (Benicio Del Toro) and a slew of lethally dangerous vixens lead by Gail (Rosario Dawson). With blood spurting white, yellow, and yes even red; a roster of hot actors that goes on and on; and sound editing that makes you feel like you're the one being punched in the face, SIN CITY is a gift for fans of Miller's art, loaded with style and grit.
This premium special edition includes the recut and extended theatrical release, original theatrical release, and exclusive never-before-seen extras, including 15-minute film school with Robert Rodriguez, high-speed green screen, long take, party, cooking school, blooper, teaser, theatrical trailers, documentaries, and more.
| | 10.5 Apocalypse DVD (2006) Widescreen
Gracie review
$7.49 Bursting with special effects, the made-for-television film comes as the sequel to the hit 2003 TV miniseries 10.5. Also starring Kim Delaney and once again directed by John Lafia, 10.5 APOCALPSE begins with a 10.5-grade earthquake ripping apart the West Coast. But for a team of researchers, government officials, and scientists (played by an all-star cast that includes Beau Bridges, Dean Cain, and Frank Langella), the trouble is just beginning.
Another massive 10.5 quake tears apart the West Coast, threatening to turn the American landscape into a hellish wasteland. Seismologist Samantha Hill (Kim Delaney) sees an even greater threat: an ever-widening fault line that's heading straight for the country's 2 largest nuclear reactors. Beau Bridges, Frank Langella, Dean Cain, Garcelle Beauvais, and Oliver Hudson also star.

| | Lee Greenwood American Patriot CD (1992)
Gracie movie DVD
$7.39 Spurred on by George Bush's unofficial adoption of "God Bless the USA" as the new American anthem, Lee Greenwood recorded American Patriot in the midst of the President's (ultimately unsuccessful) re-election campaign in 1992. American Patriot sealed Greenwood's stance as American songteller extraordinaire. Every song on the album is, unsurprisingly, about America, from "The Pledge of Allegiance" and "The Star Spangled Banner" to "God Bless America" and "God Bless the USA." Of course, Woody Guthrie's populist anthem "This Land Is Your Land" takes on a different meaning in this context, but that's not surprising -- American Patriot is a slick, satisfied album designed for the modern-day patriot and conservative, not for dust bowl activists or smugly sophisticated liberals. In other words, if you've been a fan of "God Bless the USA" since its first incarnation in the early '80s, you'll be happy with this full-blown sequel. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | In The Land Of Women DVD (2007) Full Frame; Widescreen; Dubbed; Subtitled
Gracie film
$12.95 IN THE LAND OF WOMEN is a surprisingly somber yet funny coming-of-age tale from director Jonathan Kasdan, and stars Adam Brody in a role not too different from his beloved Seth Cohen on the night-time teen soap THE O.C. Brody, playing a character his own age, breezily inhabits Carter, a loveable but somewhat directionless screenwriter (if you count soft-core porn films) who is dumped by his beautiful but shallow starlet girlfriend Sofia at the start of the film. In crisis mode, he packs up and heads to the Detroit suburb where his senile grandmother (Olympia Dukakis) lives, in an attempt to help her out and get some perspective. While desperately trying to make sense of his grandmother's incoherent ramblings, Carter slaves away at a long-coming screenplay and creates confusing friendships with the mother (Meg Ryan) and daughter (Kristen Stewart) next door.
While the film sometimes seems to be grasping for something it can't quite find, it is entertaining throughout, especially for fans of Brody. Thanks to some clever dialogue, quirky characters, and Brody's oddball line delivery, IN THE LAND OF WOMEN manages to get more than a few laughs. That said, the film also deals with serious issues like sickness and death in a lighthearted way. Ryan and Stewart both add depth to what could be one-dimensional characters, and while Brody's performance doesn't feel like much of a stretch, it's nice to see the actor moving towards some slightly more adult material. Kasdan packs the film to the brim with indie pop songs, providing a hip soundtrack for a story that feels contemporary by refusing to fit the traditional romantic-comedy mold.
Adam Brody, Kristin Stewart, Meg Ryan, and Olympia Dukakis star.
