Rob Zombie: John 5 (guitar); Piggy D (bass guitar); Tommy Clufetos (drums).
Personnel: Rob Zombie (vocals).
Rob Zombie is nothing if not theatrical, so he's in his element when unleashing his larger-than-life persona in front of an audience.
Accordingly, ZOMBIE LIVE provides an excellent way to soak up the Zombie experience to its fullest. Rampaging through a set-list of crowdpleasers, the king of horror rock gives his fans what they're bloodthirsty for, in no uncertain terms. The basic Zombie sound mixes thrash metal, punk, and a touch of industrial flavor with a spiritual debt to shock-rock O.G. Alice Cooper. The cumulative effect of all these demonic doings is akin to inviting Satan over for an air-guitar faceoff. Everybody wins.
Why now, Rob Zombie? Why a live album in 2007, just when it seemed like you were gracefully transitioning from music to movies, with your remake of Halloween turning into a hit despite decidedly mixed reviews? Clearly, the answer is that Rob Zombie never intended to leave music behind; he's a cross-platform juggernaut who delivers variations of trashy yet clever schlock-horror to all manners of media, from film to record...to the stage, as captured on Live, his first live album ever. Recorded on various stops on his Educated Horses tour in 2006, Zombie Live does lack some might when stripped of its visuals, but the interesting thing about this set is that it feels live. Which doesn't necessarily mean that it sounds raw: Zombie does a giant production designed for arenas, and the music does sound appropriately big, polished, and punchy. But for as professional as this group is -- it includes Johnny 5 on guitar, drummer Tommy Clufetos and bassist Piggy D -- they still play with vigor, and Zombie's vocals sound live, sometimes swallowed by the mix but never playing like mere replicas of the record. This element of performance energy gives Live its kick -- there are no reimagined songs here, only enthusiastic readings, which should be enough for fans. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Personnel: Chad Gray (vocals); Greg Tribbett (guitar); Vinnie Paul (drums).
Audio Mixers: Sterling Winfield; Vinnie Paul.
Recording information: Chasin Jason Studios, Dalworthington Gardens, TX.
Photographer: Chad Lee.
In the aftermath of the on-stage murder of Pantera/Damageplan guitarist Darryl "Dimebag" Abbott, fans were hard-pressed to predict if and when Dime's brother and musical partner, drummer Vinny Paul, would reemerge. In fitting tribute, the late Dime's studio eventually became the womb for the birth of a new supergroup, Hellyeah. Chad Gray, Greg Tribbett (both of Mudvayne), and former Nothingface members Maxwell and Jerry Montano join Paul on a powerful self-titled debut. "You Wouldn't Know" speaks to the soul-crushing pressures of the major-label music world, while "Matter Of Time" and "Hellyeah" are bona fide fist-pumping metal anthems. "Thank You" pays homage to loved ones lost (including, naturally, Dime himself). All in all, HELLYEAH serves up the kind of infectious groove-metal that the Abbott brothers helped invent in the late 1990s and early '00s, and will please fans of all involved.
The roots of the spinoff heavy metal band Hellyeah date back to a 2003 tour by Mudvayne and Nothingface, after which singer Chad Gray and guitarist Greg Tribbett from the former combined with guitarist Tom Maxwell and bassist Jerry Montano from the latter in a songwriting session. Conflicting schedules kept the project on hold for several years, until, during hiatuses from their usual commitments, the musicians reconvened with former Pantera and Damageplan drummer Vinnie Paul. The result is not exactly a "supergroup," but it is a collection of musicians who came in knowing what they were doing. Their album is a competent example of its genre, in which Tribbett and Maxwell combine to create crushing riffs over the pummeling rhythm section of Montano and Paul, while Gray howls typically enraged, expletive-littered lyrics to songs with titles like "Hell

Megadeth: Dave Mustaine, Glen Drover (acoustic guitar); James LoMenzo, Shawn Drover (background vocals).
Additional personnel: Cristina Scabbia (vocals); Axel Mackenrot (keyboards); Chris Rodriguez (background vocals).
Issued in May 2007 after months of delays, UNITED ABOMINATIONS not only marks Megadeth's first album for the venerable Roadrunner label, it features singer/guitarist Dave Mustaine backed by an entirely new ensemble. In fact, the record's artwork even boasts a revamped depiction of Vic Rattlehead, the band's mascot. Clearly, the changes have reinvigorated Mustaine, who is at his snarling best on these fierce tracks, which, like many classic Megadeth tunes, take on issues of politics ("Washington Is Next!"), armed conflict ("Gears of War"), and blind obedience ("Sleepwalker").
Given Mustaine's strong personality and knack for selecting top-notch musicians, the radical personnel shift has no discernable negative effects on the group, with James Lomenzo (bass) and brothers Glen and Shawn Drover (guitar and drums, respectively) contributing to a more streamlined approach that eschews excessive soloing. While Megadeth's aggressive thrash aesthetic is amply showcased on the wire-tight "Sleepwalker," Mustaine also makes room for subtleties, as on a reworking of the melancholy "A Tout Le Monde" (originally on 1994's YOUTHANASIA), which includes guest vocals by Lacuna Coil singer Cristina Scabbia. Arguably Megadeth's finest and most assured outing since '92's COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION, UNITED ABOMINATIONS is the sound of metal royalty refusing to give up its throne.
Megadeth have been through a lot of lineup upheaval circa the early 21st century, with longtime leader Dave Mustaine being the only familiar face left in attendance. But Megadeth's crunchy, venomous thrash has remained intact, as heard throughout their 2007 release, United Abominations (their first for the Roadrunner label). While many thrash-metal bands take the easy way out lyrically --

Everything And Nothing
David Sylvian Everything And Nothing CDs  (2000)

Live
CD $15.15  4.5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Out-of-print in the U.S.! Import pressing of this two CD set, a "best of" collection of tracks from David Sylvian's long musical career (including some with former band Japan), previously unreleased recordings, and re-recorded or otherwise alternate versions of other tracks. Most collections spanning such a length of time (20 years!) are spotty at best, but Sylvian's career has been unusually consistent, both in terms of direction and quality. Everything & Nothing is guided by a clarity of vision absent from most compilations. Listening to it is more like hearing a new David Sylvian record than a random sampling from his catalogue. Highlights include the usual suspects; "Blackwater", "Ghosts", and "Godman", all standouts on the albums from which they were culled. Alongside those tracks, though, is the true meat of the collection. Among the best are the breathtaking "The Scent of Magnolia", "Some Kind of Fool" (recorded for Japan's seminal Gentlemen Take Polaroids album but unfinished at the time) and an alternate version of "Weathered Wall" that far and away outstrips the original. Personnel includes: David Sylvian (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, electric piano, organ, keyboards, synthesizer, programming, loops, sound effects); Ingrid Chavez (vocals); Ryuichi Sakamoto (arranger, piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Hammond B-3 organ, synthesizer, marimba, programming, samples); Steve Tibbetts, Mark Ribot (acoustic & electric guitars); Phil Palmer (acoustic guitar & slide guitars); David Torn (electric guitar); Bill Frisell (guitar, dobro); Bill Nelson, Rob Dean, Robert Fripp (guitar); Arturo Stalteri (bouzouki); Damiano Puliti (cello); Lawrence Feldman (flute); Nicola Alesini (clarinet, soprano saxophone, keyboards, programming); Mel Collins (soprano saxophone); Mick Karn (alto & tenor saxophones, keyboards, bass, background vocals).
Producers include: David Sylvian, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Rain Tree Crow, Steve Nye, David Bottrill.
Compilation producer: David Sylvian.
Engineers include: Dave Kent, Lolly Gardner, Pat McCarthy.
Recorded between 1980 and 2000.
Singer/songwriter David Sylvian's career spans a long and enigmatic scene of experimental rock and emotional restylings. Not one to fully absorb the conventional ways of a certain circuit, Sylvian is a realist musician. He is ambitious in molding his own catharses within layers of woodwinds, horns, and homegrown synth beats, and 1999's Dead Bees on a Cake was only a small cue to Sylvian's forthcoming work. The new millennium brought the release of the double-disc Everything and Nothing, a reflection of Sylvian's previously unreleased older material. Sonically gorgeous with vocals comparable to Bryan Ferry, Everything and Nothing is a vastly expressive record of 29 tracks lost in the vaults of remixes, time, and creative changes; it is certainly a moving package of lush elevations and underrated wordplay. The two-disc set hums with eclectic instrumental constructions and tinges of Middle Eastern material, especially on tracks such as "Ride." "Pop Song" is more attractive with its abstract guitar riffs and whimsical synth loops, and "Some Kind of Fool," a long-lost Japan song intended to be on 1980's Gentleman Take Polaroids, is electronically driven. It's naturally abrasive in lyrical poetry, and Sylvian's atmospheric nature to float over the initial song composition is classic. "Jean the Birdman" echoes the sultriness of Peter Murphy, but Sylvian is shiftless at the same time with his funkadelic mood. The textural differences among the cuts make Everything and Nothing particularly inviting, reflecting the wholehearted desire that continues to make David Sylvian a fresh contributor. He is surprising, professional, and unattached to what's common. Everything and Nothing is undoubtedly a firm recognition of Sylvian's musical wizardry. ~ MacKenzie Wilson

Uh-oh. It is always a mistake when recording artists allows a new record company to talk them into re-recording their old hits. Not only is it a consumer ripoff, but it also sends the message that the artists are spent as a contemporary force. One would not have thought that Shenandoah, coming off the Top Ten, Grammy-winning hit "In the Vicinity of the Heart," was in such dire straits, but the departure of 40% of the band prior to the release of this album indicates otherwise. And the decision to put only five new songs on the record, along with nine re-recordings and a repeat of "In the Vicinity of the Heart" from last time give the impression that a stop-gap was thought necessary. One can only hope that the remaining trio rebounds from this misstep. ~ William Ruhlmann

Lunapark 0,10 CD  (1999) Import

Live
CD $12.95
Classic compilation, originally released in 1999, of archival spoken word artifacts from the most important avant-garde writers and artists of the century. From Dadaists Guillaume Apollinaire, Kurt Schwitters, Tristan Tzara and Marcel Duchamp in the 19-teens to James Joyce, e.e. cummings and Gertrude Stein mid-century to the Brazilian avant-garde of the 1970s, this is part of Sub Rosa's Aural Documents series and is one of their most important historic releases. 2005. Performers include: Guillaume Apollinaire, Vladimir Maiakovski, Richard Huelsenbeck, Kurt Schwitters, James Joyce, Gertrude Stein, Antonin Artaud, Tristan Tzara, Camille Bryen, Marcel Duchamp, e.e. cummings, Brion Gysin, Julian Beck, Gherasim Luca, Francois Dufrene, Pierre Guyotat, Augusto De Campos.
One of the more fascinating spoken word collections available, lunapark 0,10 consists of tracks recorded throughout the 20th century from a variety of avant-garde writers and artists, in a variety of languages and contexts. It's a perfect release for the Sub Rosa label, which has long focused on the recorded history of innovative art, and serves in its way as a grand sampler for the curious listener as well as those well-versed in the authors and artists collected. Hearing such noted authors as James Joyce (his selection being the famous reading of "Anna Livia Plurabelle"), Gertrude Stein, and E.E. Cummings tackle their own work is a treat, but the joy of lunapark 0,10 is its range beyond a literary canon. Kurt Schwitters' frenetic "Ursonate" has to be heard rather than read; similarly Camille Bryen's readings, while Brion Gysin's selections start with "Pistol Poem," numbers interspersed with gunshots. The earliest recordings, while understandably rough in terms of fidelity, often have a strong power that transcends the recording medium -- Vladimir Maiakovski's readings of "Une Aventure Extraordinaire" and "Ecoutez! -- Poslouchaitie" capture a strong, dramatic voice in full flight, echo adding to its impact. Once or twice the speakers introduce their pieces with context -- Richard Huelsenbeck's "Phantastische Gebete," recorded nearly 50 years after its writing, is explained as being a piece from the original Cabaret Voltaire. One interesting selection is from Marcel Duchamp -- rather than reciting poetry or prose, he speaks about "The Creative Act," a calmly spoken meditation on artistic impulse taken from a 1957 convention appearance. If anything, lunapark 0,10's emphasis is on the power of the spoken word regardless of the language spoken -- or in some cases, not even being language at all. ~ Ned Raggett

First One Free
Blufunk First One Free CD  (2003)

CD $16.45
Blufunk's first release, "First One Free" is a kaleidoscope of style and story that reveals a passion for truth and an unadulterated love of music. In a musical climate that's self consciously self-conscious, Blufunk's pioneering its own sound by doing what comes naturally: shooting from the heart. The album is a shining reflection of what rock and roll used to be; the emotion of a Duane Allman lead, the raw energy of a Bonham beat, the heartfelt lyrics of a Billy Joel song. A little bit country, a little bit rock and roll. The band's founding members and songwriting team, Adrienne Brazley and Pete Penebre, have been playing together since 1987. Penebre's a southern blues guitar player reincarnated as a New York Italian. Brazley's a mulatto-gypsy jack-of-all-trades performer; drummer-singer-songwriter who's musical influences range from Steely Dan to Jaco Pastorius. It's this partnership that forms the backbone of Blufunk's sound. Penebre grew up on The Allman Brother's, Little Feat, Jeff Beck, Hendrix. His guitar style glides from southern fried slide leads to funk chops and chicken-picking rhythms. Brazley contributes lyrical, at times humorous portraits of experiences with people and places, and a rich and varied vocal tone that takes its cues from the character of each song. Her ear for intricate harmonies harkens to the backups of Stevie Wonder and Joni Mitchell. In 1999, Penebre and Brazley formed Blufunk with Craig Lauinger, a hard-rock drummer with a background in Jazz arrangement. In 2001, bassist Gary Brown joined the band, an alumna of George Clinton's Parliament. Penebre produced and engineered the band's first album (First One Free) in his DC project studio (Brazley and Penebre have a business composing music for picture). It's a homegrown project with a big studio sound; shining bright and bursting with energy. Anyone who likes music will want to hear this album.

This Fool Can Die Now
Scout Niblett This Fool Can Die Now CD  (2007) (Import) United Kingdom

CD $10.99  Audio Samples
Personnel: Will Oldham (vocals); Kristian Goddard, Susana Voelz, Alison Chesley, Chris Saligoe, Bonnie "Prince" Billy.
With 2007's THIS FOOL CAN DIE NOW, British indie artist Scout Niblett (born Emma Louise Niblett) reinforces her revered status by presenting a set of fascinatingly melancholy songs. Often moving from spare, folk-like passages to distorted, amped-up moments (see "Let Thine Heart Be Warned"), Niblett doesn't bother to hide similarities to PJ Harvey, yet her expressive voice and nuanced guitar playing stand on their own merits.
After four albums that garnered regular (and not unwarranted) comparisons to both Cat Power and PJ Harvey, British born, Oregon based singer/songwriter Scout Niblett has turned her sights to something a bit more exploratory. Throughout This Fool Can Die Now, there's a subtle but unmistakable experimental feel very much akin to Scott Walker's more recent albums, such as Tilt and The Drift. Of course, it's not as if these 14 songs sound like Walker -- no one sounds like Scott Walker but Scott Walker -- but there's a similar fascination with minimalism, repetition, and dramatic dynamic shifts, and throughout this album, Niblett experiments with her vocal phrasing and range in a very Walker-like fashion, veering unexpectedly from a flirtatious coo to raw, throaty shrieking to a Karen Dalton-like folk-blues wail. The resulting songs aren't completely foreign to Niblett's longtime fans -- the opening "Do You Want to Be Buried with My People?," a duet with Will Oldham, is familiar countrified alt folk -- but there is a bracing fearlessness to This Fool Can Die Now that finally fully differentiates Scout Niblett from the rest of the "weird folk" boomlet. ~ Stewart Mason
