Collection is a generous, double-disc set that features 47 of Leroy Anderson's finest moments, including such milestones as "Blue Tango," "Sleigh Ride," and "Syncopated Clock." As a matter of fact, the compilation comes close to being definitive, since it effectively traces Anderson's musical development, and features his best (and best-known) tunes. The result is both an effective introduction and a fascinating retrospective of a gifted easy listening/classical-pop composer. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Handel: Judas Maccabeus
$7.75 In the screen adaptation of BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY, Helen Fielding's international best-selling phenomenon, documentary filmmaker (and real-life inspiration for the character Shazzer) Sharon Maguire has managed a rare feat--a film as captivating as the novel. Bridget Jones (Renée Zellweger) is a pretty and neurotic thirtysomething "singleton" (in her vernacular) who vows to take control of her life after being humiliated by handsome, standoffish barrister, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) at her parents' New Year's party. Determined to lose weight, and cut back on vices like wine, cigarettes, and workaholic-alcoholic-misogynistic men, Bridget begins a diary to chart her progress. Unfortunately, the P.R. executive hits a snag when her boss, gorgeous cad Daniel (Hugh Grant) instigates a sexy e-mail flirtation. Despite her tendency to bungle book launch parties, and any situation involving the ever-present, ever-disapproving Mark Darcy, Bridget's winning combination of charm, vulnerability, and wit intrigues not only the seductively dangerous Daniel, but also the arrogant barrister. Featuring a note-perfect performance by Zellweger, a devilishly against-type one by Grant, and the inspired casting of Firth (the object of Bridget's lusty fantasies in the book); DIARY is a clever, delightful romantic comedy guaranteed to please old fans and win new ones.
Includes the feature film starring Renee Zellweger, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant, along with lots of bonus features, such as Portrait of the Makeup Artist, a Guide to Bridget Britishisms, Young and the Mateless, Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason excerpt, behind-the-scenes, deleted scenes, more.

Handel: Judas Maccabeus
$15.55 The Peter Erskine trio's graceful European style is expertly captured on JUNI, their fourth release on Manfred Eicher's ECM label. Erskine, a drummer of international fame who has successfully proven his superb musical abilities in a myriad of styles, is perfectly at home in this delicate, extremely expressive setting. His partners John Taylor (piano) and Pelle Danielsson (bass) are, of course, very adept at the complexities of the European jazz style that touches on the classical chamber music tradition. The three combine to produce a recording of stunning beauty and sophistication.
The very free-form "Prelude No. 2" begins the disc with Taylor's bell-like tones, which develop into a series of improvised duets between Erskine and his comrades. The trio's exploratory impulse is further expressed on the flowing "Windfall" and Erskine's simmering "The Ant and The Elk." Taylor's "Fable" is a delicate ballad that combines the pianist's soft touch with Erskine's tasteful use of brushes on his drums and cymbals. The disc's centerpiece, however, is the melodic "Twelve," which builds from a subtle beginning to a haunting melody that is stretched and pulled in every direction over a continuous current of Erskine's driving cymbal work.
Recorded at Rainbow Studios, Oslo, Norway in July 1997.
Peter Erskine Trio: Peter Erskine (drums); John Taylor (piano); Palle Danielsson (acoustic bass).

Handel: Judas Maccabeus
$6.59 The Naxos Deutsche Schubert-Lied-Edition: Schubert set the poetry of over 115 writers to music. He selected poems from classical Greece, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, from eighteenthcentury German authors, early Romantics, Biedermeier poets, and Heine. The Deutsche Schubert- Lied-Edition presents all Schubert’s Lieder, over 700 songs, grouped according to the poets who inspired him. Thanks to Bärenreiter’s Neue Schubert-Ausgabe (New Schubert Edition), Tübingen, which uses primary sources, the performers have been able to benefit from the most recent research of the editorial team. This is the first of four discs of Schubert’s settings of the ‘romantic’ poets.
