(1 Customer Review)
The first album by the Danish melodic heavy rock quartet D-A-D contains 12 songs including the hit "Sleeping My Day Away".
No Fuel Left for the Pilgrims was an outstanding international debut from Danish rockers D:A:D, following two promising efforts on the European Mega label. Irresistible lead-off single "Sleeping My Day Away" combined a rhythm guitar straight out of the AC/DC handbook, spiced by melody lines performed with a country-ish, '50s-style guitar twang -- a unique formula that the band successfully applied to other standouts like "Point of View" and "Lords of the Atlas." "Rim of Hell" is a stomping party anthem riding a monstrous, mid-paced groove, and the band also rocks out full-throttle on "Jihad," "True Believer," and the almost Metallica-heavy "Ill Will." And even though their command of the English language is hardly perfect (it's rather sketchy, actually), D:A:D transform a potential negative into a glowing positive by taking fearless
poetic license with their lyrics. The results are often clever and always hilarious, as heard on "Siamese Twin" (sample lyric: "She's two of a kind and she's mine") and "Girl Nation" ("Bad bush and dangerous curves -- a female civilization"), among others. Why this record didn't become a huge smash is anyone's guess, but fans of raw, honest, hard rock simply can't go wrong with No Fuel Left for the Pilgrims. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
D.A.D. stands for Disneyland After Dark.

No Fuel Left For The Pilgrims CD music
$13.15 It isn't hard to see why some folks might confuse Poughkeepsie, NY's Bless the Fallen with Phoenix, AZ's blessthefall. They have very similar (though not identical) names, both are part of screamo, and both bands have had members named Michael (Mike Frisby in Phoenix's blessthefall and Mikey Fraleigh in Poughkeepsie's Bless the Fallen). But they are definitely two different bands. A press release that Crash Music sent out with The Eclectic Sounds of a City Painted Black & White (the Poughkeepsie combo's first full-length album) describes Bless the Fallen as a band that is "swimming in the veins of influences as diverse as Pantera, Pink Floyd, and Iron Maiden," but truth be told, there is nothing on The Eclectic Sounds of a City Painted Black & White that gives any indication of these Poughkeepsie residents having such a wide variety of influences. This 46-minute disc offers a screamo/metalcore blend that contains occasional hints of death metal and black metal, and two of screamo's main ingredients are present: swirling guitars, and an extreme vocals/clean vocals contrast. However, Fraleigh's screaming vocals are dominant, and there are times when this CD downplays the screamo component and becomes all-out metalcore. ~ Alex Henderson

| | Richard Barnes Take To The Mountains CD (2007) Remastered
No Fuel Left For The Pilgrims music CDs
$15.65 Richard Barnes was a vocalist with the U.K. pop group the Quiet Five before departing for a solo career in 1969, and over the next four years he cut a handful of supremely glossy pop records before launching a career in the musical theater in the London cast of Jesus Christ Superstar. Twenty of Barnes' solo sides are collected on Take to the Mountains, and listening to them it seems it was his destiny to be a West End star -- while he doesn't exactly go overboard on these songs, there's a strong sense of brio in his vocal style, and Barnes isn't afraid to play to the last row of the balcony. Gerry Bron produced these sessions, and he clearly didn't hesitate to pull out all the stops, ordering up elaborate orchestrations and top-shelf studio craft on the Latin flavored "Maria Elena," the almost-psychedelic "High Flying Electric Bird," and the plaintive "I Think I'm Getting Over You." Barnes and Bron were also shrewd judges of material, and along with a number of songs from the catalog of Tony Hazzard, Take to the Mountains also includes some impressive interpretations of the works of Harry Nilsson ("Maybe"), Emitt Rhodes ("Live ...

| | Bert Jansch Acoustic Routes CD (2002) (Import) England; Remastered; Deluxe Edition; United Kingdom
No Fuel Left For The Pilgrims album
$16.29 The so-called folk revival (or folk scare, as some have called it) of the 1960s manifested itself a little differently in the U.K. than it did in the U.S. Drawing more on the blues and modal elements of traditional music, British folk guitarists tossed in a healthy dose of jazz sensibility, as well, and in essence developed what amounted to a British school of acoustic guitar playing. Players like Bert Jansch, Martin Carthy, Davy Graham, Wizz Jones, John Renbourn, and Duck Baker all exhibit a similar approach and style, full of snapped strings, intricate picking, and jazzy fills, patterns that can also be heard in the playing of Paul Simon, Donovan, and even Jimmy Page. Of these guitarists, none has had a greater impact or influence than Jansch, whose playing has maintained an impressively high level throughout his long career, and coupled with his laconic Scottish drawl and sturdy songwriting talents, Jansch has managed to survive ...
