Their last album to hit the charts, 1985's When the Boys Meet the Girls found Sister Sledge attempting to return to past form as they brought Chic's Nile Rodgers back onboard to produce and perform. And although the move would ultimately prove ineffective, as the album appeared and hovered just out of the Top 50, this easy pairing returned the sisters to an earlier edge. With the title track backed by an eclectic arrangement, those classic punchy Sister Sledge vocals were pushed well into the front of the action. The album birthed two further standouts, as both "Frankie," which is spun to become reggae-lite, and the heavily Rodgers-influenced club hit "Dancing on the Jagged Edge" rippled off the grooves. The latter, just barely limping to a paltry number 73 R&B, would prove the band's last hit until their comeback in the early '90s. Elsewhere, the Kathy Sledge-led ballad "You Need Me" emerges the best of the bunch, while the snappy "Peer Pressure" wades into wave territory, leaving the frenetic and not-quite-pleasing "Hold out Poppy" well out of the loop. When the Boys Meet the Girls is a fine effort, but this late in the day it just doesn't pull enough tricks out of the hat to make it worthwhile. And even through it's a major step up from their last effort, Sister Sledge is far better sampled across their earlier R&B heyday. ~ Amy Hanson

Dudley and Jacqueline Laufman play jigs, reels and hornpipes while calling traditional New England dances. They were honored to have been selected to present these dances during the two week Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington DC in 1999. Two years later Dudley was distinguished with the New Hampshire Governor's Arts Award in Folk Heritage for lifetime achievement and excellence. He has been nominated for the National Folk Heritage Fellowship of the National Endowment for the Arts.They have toured throughout the United States and performed in Canada, England and Wales. Dudley, who also performed in Greece and Turkey, has published books of poetry, dances and musicians, and numerous documentaries recordings. He plays accordion, concertina, harmonica, is a Yankee storyteller, and has been at all of this for over 56 years.Both Dudley and Jacqueline are self-taught having learned by the oral tradition. They fiddle while calling and clogging their feet at the same time. Jacqueline apprenticed to Dudley in 1986 and continues to pass on this way of learning to her own fiddle students.While earning their living as Two Fiddles, they also play in the Canterbury Country Dance Orchestra of which Dudley is the leader. Tunes from several of the LP albums have been re-released on a CD. They have authored two educational books with CDs: White Mountain Reel and Sweets of May, especially suited for music, physed and classroom teachers and recreation leaders. Easy to use, one track has the dance calls and the next tract has only the music so leaders can do their own calls using the directions in the book. White Mountain Reel Companions, arrangements by Janet Farrar-Royce, is a set of three texts of the dance tunes for violin, viola and cello. Dragonforce's fourth outing, ULTRA BEATDOWN, is appropriately titled. It's a slam-banging, face-fisted explosion of sound-- everything one would expect from the band that put the "hero" into the GUITAR HERO video game franchise. Once more produced by Karl Groom (Threshold, Pendragon, Edenbridge), Dragonforce has again created a sweeping, melody-driven platter of power. From the signature, lightning twin guitar solos of Herman Li and Sam Totman to the machine-gun drumming of David Macintosh, Dragonforce is a true speed metal phenomenon. Adding to the mix are ZP Theart's sweeping vocals, Vadim Pruzhanov's Malmsteen-esque keyboard acrobatics, and Frederic Leclercq's monster bass sound. In a genre that arguably started and stopped with Helloween's innovations in the late 1980s, Dragonforce is making an active effort to push the genre just a little bit further.
Look up the word "juggernaut" in the dictionary and you may just find Dragonforce's photo alongside the definition. Not only does it aptly describe the nature of their hyperkinetic "extreme power metal," but also their vertiginous ascent from utter music community obscurity to new media, errr...juggernaut, when their breakthrough single, "Through the Fire and Flames," became first a YouTube sensation and later a keystone of the Guitar Hero video game phenomenon.
