Musiq Soulchild: Smooth Jazz Tribute CD music
$14.45 As one reviewer said of the cheerful music and personality of this increasingly popular voice of smooth jazz guitar, it's Disneyland all the time with him. In other words, Positive Energy, the name of his second genre disc, wasn't just a happy marketing tool. And the title of this disc is appropriate, too, because ...

| | No Motiv Daylight Breaking CD (2004) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Japan
Musiq Soulchild: Smooth Jazz Tribute songs
$37.55 Its glossy paperboard packaging, lyric book full of moody pen and ink renderings, and dingy duotint photography mark Daylight Breaking as No Motiv's serious album. But as things turn out, the Cali-based quartet has made something more complicated and less effective -- a transition album that never seems to go anywhere. No Motiv has shifted up its rhythm section and filled out its ...

| | Sister Sledge When The Boys Meet The Girls CD (1985)
Musiq Soulchild: Smooth Jazz Tribute album
$9.69 Their last album to hit the charts, 1985's When the Boys Meet the Girls found Sister Sledge attempting to return to past form as they brought Chic's Nile Rodgers back onboard to produce and perform. And although the move would ultimately prove ineffective, as the album appeared and hovered just out of the Top 50, this easy pairing returned the sisters to an earlier edge. With the title track backed by an eclectic arrangement, those classic punchy Sister Sledge vocals were pushed well into the front of the action. The album birthed two further standouts, as both "Frankie," which is spun to become reggae-lite, and the heavily Rodgers-influenced club hit "Dancing on the Jagged Edge" rippled off the grooves. ...
| | Mt Hood Jazz Band I'm Still Here CD (2007)
Musiq Soulchild: Smooth Jazz Tribute CD music
$13.25 Most college stage bands feature enthusiastic ensembles and weak soloists. That is to be expected because, although the students have been well trained in reading music and playing together as sections, it takes time to develop one's own voice as an improviser. However the Mt. Hood Jazz Band is a different case altogether. On I'm Still Here, they not only sound like a professional jazz orchestra in their ensembles, but they feature consistently creative and inventive solos. Certainly no one listening to altoist Max Bryk solo on John Coltrane's "Grand Central" is going to think of him as a mere student. And while three pros (trombonist Stan Bock, trumpeter Thara Memory, and Nancy King who sings "I've Got You Under My Skin") are heard one time apiece, their presence, while welcome, was not needed to make this a very musical and surprising set. Quite a few players have opportunities to solo and none sound like teenagers or beginners. The ...
