| | Ehud Asherie Lockout CD Ehud Asherie Discography of CDs
Israeli-born, New York-based post-bop pianist Ehud Asherie makes his debut as a leader with the unflashy small-combo set Lockout. Leading a solos-discouraged rhythm section (bassist Joel Forbes and drummer Phil Stewart) alongside a front line of trumpeter Ryan Kisor and tenor Grant Stewart (with whose quartet the young pianist got his first major exposure) on a set evenly split between originals and standards, Asherie generally keeps the tempos fleet and the spotlight moving. Asherie, Stewart, and Kisor all get their showcases, Stewart's most impressive workout coming on a briskly paced run through Dizzy Gillespie's "Shaw 'Nuff" that's so speedy that the leader himself nearly falls apart at one point on his solo. But Asherie isn't afraid of lyricism, either, as evinced by his lovely, Tommy Flanagan-like solo intro to a reflective take on Irving Berlin's "Isn't This a Lovely Day?" Though Lockout is a completely straightforward set that rarely strays out of its comfort zone, that's not a fault on its part: this music's melodic invention and rhythmic ease are the result of its players' well-earned confidence, which makes Lockout a low-key gem. ~ Stewart Mason

| | Bill Charlap Live At The Village Vanguard CD (2007)
Lockout music CDs
$11.69 Releasing a LIVE AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD album might seem like an attempt at 'greatness by association,' a wish to be filed alongside same-titled albums by the likes of John Coltrane and Bill Evans, but the Bill Charlap Trio doesn't need to rely on marketing gimmicks. The music on this release stands on its own; in fact, it even lives up to the legacy associated with the legendary New York club.
Flanked by drummer Kenny Washington and bassist Peter Washington, Charlap proves he is one of the most tasteful and accomplished pianist ...
| | Dena DeRose Live At Jazz Standard Volume One CD (2007)
Lockout songs
$14.39 There have been a number of singing jazz pianists over the years, yet most have been stronger in one area or the other. Dena DeRose was a pianist first and took up singing only after a hand injury sidelined her from playing for a time. But she is the real deal, able to bring out the best in the music and lyrics to any given piece. Her snappy take of the standard "Speak Low" features her assertive playing, along with a bit of soft scat as she winds up the piece. DeRose wrote the lyrics to Philippe Petrucciani's haunting ballad "This Is Love," a challenging piece that also showcases bassist Martin Wind. Cole Porter's "Get out of Town" seems like a song in danger of overexposure, yet the pianist's amusing approach includes her dark extended vamp and Matt Wilson's unusual percussion line in the introduction. She proves captivating in her ...
| | Dave Holland Pass It On CD (2008)
Lockout album
$9.69 Using a sextet, upright bassist Holland sets the bar even higher than on his previous efforts, adding the always tasteful pianist Mulgrew Miller and a four-horn front line that is relentless. The jaunty opening number, "The Sum of All Parts," is a 5/4 African percussion-based piece led by Robin Eubanks with folded-in alto and trumpet and witty counterpoint. Adding a light samba feel during the upbeat "Fast Track" with the horns in perfect unison, the ensemble shifts up to hard bop. A 10/8 choppy and bouncy "Modern Times" also uses Brazilian inferences and sees Antonio Hart switching to soprano. On the soulful side, the ...

| | Peepshow Innocence CD (2006)
Lockout album
$12.69 Peepshow biographyVocals: Brian Armstrong Lead Guitar: Keith Norton Drums: Thomas Nadeau Bass: Jason Shavey Guitar: Dane Brooks Guitar/Vocals: Bobby Lohnes The name Peepshow has always generated some controversy. It’s either loved or hated a name that seems to stick in the back of people’s minds. When we play a venue for the first time, people actually think they have heard of us. “It’s great, we always seem to really connect with the audience...” –Brian Armstrong. On the other hand, try doing a search for the band on the internet and see where that takes you! Whether you like the name or not, it seems to create an interest…and that’s what we are going for. “…No press is bad press right?” We’re a Rock Band that came together in January of 2002. We emphasize strong melodic vocals, dynamics, and powerful guitars. Brian Armstrong has one of those voices that grabs you and pulls you in. He has the ability to make you want to listen to what he is saying; his lyrics are filled with personal growth that many can relate too. Add in the vocal harmonies of Bobby Lohnes and the combination of him and Brian together sound as one voice. The two of them have worked in projects for over 10 years now and Bobby really knows how to blend his voice with Brian’s. Keith Norton writes music that combines rich tones, hooks, and melodic textures. His singing guitar solos resonate with passion and intensity that bring back the past. Jason Shavey’s bass lines have melody and movement that really bring out Brian’s vocals. “If Jason wasn’t so good at bass I’d think he was trying to take my job!” –Keith Norton. Thomas Nadeau's drumming is crucial to the Peepshow sound. He understands songwriting and knows how to build intensity when needed, and his infectious fun personality shows through in his playing. Dane Brooks is our most recent ingredient. His edgy guitar rhythm brings a fresh new dimension to the band that keeps Peepshow moving forward. Producer, and friend, Scott Olson (Limp Bizkit, Deftones, Heart, and Alice in Chains) produced our debut album Guilty Pleasure, released on November 16th, 2002. We had our CD release party at Seattle’s oldest rock club, The Central Saloon, to an over capacity, record-breaking crowd. The album spent the next seven weeks in the top ten of the Seattle Stranger’s Northwest Top 20 Album Sales charts. Our first single “Train” shot to number 2 in the General Rock Category on MP3.com. “Train” also won MP3.com Grammies for Best New Artist, Best Male Vocalist, Best Song, as well as Best Production. Once we released Guilty Pleasure it caught the eye of Budweiser ...
