Hot Hot Heat suffered something of a sophomore slump with ELEVATOR, the follow-up to their excellent debut MAKE UP THE BREAKDOWN. 2007's HAPPINESS LTD., the group's third effort, has something of a return to the energy of their first release, while still experimenting with new directions.
Tunes like "Let Me In" and "5 Times Out of 100" bounce with fun, nervy grooves, offsetting the unexpected somberness of the title track opener. Who'd expect Hot Hot Heat to kick an album off with a ballad? The variety makes for an interesting, if not always even, listen, and the band sounds better than ever (thanks in part to production help from some industry heavyweights). Fans of the band's first two albums will find strong elements from both on HAPPINESS LTD.
This DVD/CD set follows the success of the modern rockers' 2005 major label debut, Elevator. Co-produced by the band and top-notch producers including Butch Walker, Tim Palmer, and Rob Cavallo, this release proves there's no limit to the extremes reached by hot Hot Heat. The DVD includes the making of the record: Harmonicas & Tambourines. This title carries a parental advisory.
