Peter Hammill again plays the same trick as he did in 1978-1979, when, after the strange, experimental The Future Now LP, came the more straightforward pH7. The same relationship exists between A Black Box and Sitting Targets. The latter LP, released in 1981, is often overlooked because of its cold, very early-'80s production, but it has yielded many classic songs that would grow out of their rather square studio arrangements and go on to provide fans with many memorable live moments. And once you get used to the sound (something a lot easier here than with Skin), Sitting Targets is actually a pretty strong record -- and the presence of drummer Guy Evans on most tracks is no stranger to that. Granted, "Breakthrough" and "Hesitation" are not fantastic rock songs, but they work well and counterbalance the darker atmospheres of "Glue" and "Ophelia" on the first LP side. "Sitting Targets" and "Sign" remain good, catchy songs with an edge. The only real disappointment, but only in retrospect, is "Stranger Still," which lacks its a cappella coda, and most of the spine-tingling madness the singer imbues it with onstage. "Central Hotel" will also provide an excellent rock number for theHammill spin-off band K-Group, and makes for a punchy album closer. Good songwriting can survive dated production values. Here's proof. ~ François Couture

Sitting Targets album
$13.95 One of the best albums ever made about the end of a relationship and the trauma that results, Over is the harrowing document of the failure of a long-term relationship Peter Hammill had been in. With a brief side-step to examine the loss felt by parents when their children move out ("Autumn"), Hammill exposes feelings of guilt, rage, betrayal, attempts at understanding, and attempts at healing. From the self-recrimination of the furious "Crying Wolf," to the angry lashing out of "Time Heals," through the heart-wrenching sadness of "This Side Of The Looking Glass" (with Hammill turning in a beautiful vocal performance against an orchestral setting), to the extremely tentative healing steps of "Lost And Found" (which includes a middle eighth that concludes "La Rossa" from Van Der Graaf Generator's Still Life, but in a cynical way), the ...

Sitting Targets CD music
$19.79 The Future Now is one of Peter Hammill's best and most disconcerting albums since the mid-'70s. Filled with beautiful piano ballads, strange experiments, and anthemic rock songs, it stands as multi-faceted as the artist -- who, incidentally, shaved half of his facial hair for the eye-catching cover shot. Hammill has never mastered the art of the opening track, and this album marks no exception: "Pushing Thirties" is a bland, surprise-less rock song. Once you pass that gate though, wonders succeed one another in your ears. In the ballad department, "If I Could" shines like a diamond. This beautiful love song about a man who will never be able to keep his wife from leaving would remain a regular feature in Hammill's concerts for the next 25 years, but no later recording matches this studio version. "The Mousetrap (Caught In)" -- the story of an actor performing the same play for the last 30 years -- is another highlight. Unstable fuzz guitar (reminiscent of Robert Fripp, although he is not credited as a guest) give "Trappings" and "Mediaevil" a strange atmosphere, while backward vocals turn "The Cut" into the most sinister song in Hammill's book since "German Overalls." "A Motor-Bike in Africa" combines electronic percussion, studio effects, a mantra-like narrative, and a pinch of English humor to uncertain results. Amidst all these good songs is another gemstone, although it ...

Sitting Targets music CDs
$15.15 Peter Hammill's seventh album has been recorded with the same lineup as The Future Now (with the singer handling most instruments,David Jackson on sax, and Graham Smith on violin) but yields very different results. The spirit of experimentation that prevailed on the earlier opus has, for the most part, vanished in favor of tighter mainstream songs. After the slightly-too-sweet opening ballad, "My Favourite," comes "Careering," a jerky rocker that fails to convince. The dark "Porton Down" and "Mirror Images" are much better. The latter was part of Van Der Graaf Generator's live repertoire in the group's final months, and this studio version is pale compared to the raw rendition on VDGG's Vital. "The Old School Tie" and "Mr. X (Gets Tense)" attend political and social concerns. The pick of the litter is Chris Judge Smith's "Time for a Change," slightly country and totally charming. "Faculty X" ends the album with a more complex song for the progressive rock crowd ...

| | Velvet Teen Gyzmkid CD (2006) Extended Play
Sitting Targets songs
$7.99 The Velvet Teen's 2006 EP GyzmKid isn't really an EP. With one original track and two remixes of songs from their forthcoming record, Cum Laude, the disc is a little short, but the tunes on it are definitely strong enough to satiate fans who can't wait for the full album. The title track alone is worth the price of purchase: a wild composition with layers of prog rock drumming, Atari sound effects, and slick pop/rock harmonies. A synthesizer carries the pointed melody over a fantastic wall of shoegazer guitar noise, while the chorus reaches an epic climax without turning cathartic or whiny. Much like the second song on the disc, a dreamy synth pop song called "Spin the Wink [Little Cat Remix]," "GyzmKid"'s electronic orchestration keeps things cool while ...
| | Regenerated Headpiece Rat Race Vacation CD (2001)
Sitting Targets album
$9.35 WHO OR WHAT IS REGENERATED HEADPIECE?Who or What is Regenerated Headpiece?Formed in 1998, Regenerated Headpiece (RHP) is a groundbreaking trio out of New York City-three young men dedicated to changing the way people think about what hip hop is and what it can be. Representing the fresh new face of hip hop music with an unprecedented sound and lyrical intelligence, producer/emcee Phon-X (Phonics), poet/emcee Shred Lexicon, and turntable specialist DJ Exfyl (X-File) seek to honor the rich history of their artform while simultaneously creating its future in the present. Phon-X has been emceeing since he was 12 years old and producing beats since he was 15. His rhymes vary from the serious to the comic, but are built upon a foundation of raw wordplay and cleverness undercut by a political bent which serves to set him apart from other emcees. As a producer, Phon-X combines influences felt in every type of organized noise recorded or otherwise to create wholly original tracks complete with deeply rich sonic landscapes. Shred Lexicon comes from poetry originally, and, truth be told, never really left. The prototype for the next evolutionary stage of the emcee, Shred is the kind of cat who is no longer satisfied with restating what's already been said in another way. Instead, he chooses to open things up, shaping both vocabulary and cadence to fit new, unprescribed rhythms and idea tracts. DJ Exfyl has been deejaying for 9 years, and uses Technics 1210's, a Vestax 05-Pro and Korg Triton as the tools of his trade. A DJ Records Battle Top ten Finalist in 1998, Exfyl is known best for his ill scratching style, in which he rips combo after combo using basic techniques as well as more advanced techniques ranging from a transform scratch to a two click flare. Regenerated Headpiece is the official group ...
