2007 two CD collection of BBC Sessions from the Scottish rockers led by former Altered Images/Hipsway bassist Johnny McElhone and the charismatic and captivating Sharleen Spiteri. This wonderful collection features 25 of the bands' In Session recordings made for the BBC at Maida Vale studios during the promotional tours for some their chart topping albums, where the `under-the-gun' pressure of having to re-record songs in single takes creates fantastic alternate versions of some of their biggest and best tracks; a stunning, stripped down 'Say What You Want', a fabulous early take on 'Black Eyed Boy' and a cover of The Beatles' 'I've Got A Feeling' which was only ever recorded for the BBC alongside `In Session' versions of tracks such as 'Tired Of Being Alone', 'Halo', 'In Our Lifetime' and 'Carnival Girl'. It's a wonderful companion to their Greatest Hits. Universal. BBC Sessions Review

BBC Sessions
$8.99 Recorded live at The Wetlands, New York, New York on August 23, 2001.
Sacred steel guitar seems tied in spirit and substance to its gospel piano counterpart: Both instruments encourage harmony-based performance, yet in the church context each emphasizes the dramatic gesture instead. This is especially true when performed live, as church music by definition tends to be. On this set, Randolph generates an enormous amount of heat. Much of his solo on the opening cut, "Ted's Jam," boils down to little more than a single note played repeatedly; other passages feature quick-picked licks at a Satriani clip. The band's rhythmic support fans these fires; pointed articulation from the bass and drums balances the steel's legato tendencies. At times they sound a lot like the Allman Brothers, in large part because of John Ginty's straightforward style and timbral preferences on organ. This, of course, encourages ...

| | Neil Young Live At Massey Hall 1971 CD (2007) Includes bonus DVD
BBC Sessions
$21.29 Bob Dylan once famously remarked about hearing Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" on the radio that he knew his days as the man of the hour were numbered. Fact is, Young is the only guy who can even reasonably compete with Dylan for the title of rock's greatest songwriter, and while "Dylan in the '60s" has long been a cliched assessment of an undeniable rock hot streak, so too has become "Neil Young in the '70s." While Dylan has long culled material from his archive, Young has been reluctant to do the same. He's now joining the fray full force with LIVE AT MASSEY HALL 1971--the second live release in an ongoing series from Young's legendarily deep vaults.
The performance comes between the release of AFTER THE GOLDRUSH and HARVEST and hot on the heels of DEJA VU, basically the last time Young's eminently enthralling man-child persona of "I Am A Child" and "Helpless" held sway over the obstinate, electric crank of TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT and RUST NEVER SLEEPS. The set is pure magic. Young still seems humble and shy, a guy who stumbled across an incredible gift for melody but possessed the worldliness to let his awkward talent breathe and warble as it was meant to.
