| | Hiss & Chambers Making Eyes EP CD Hiss & Chambers Discography of CDs
The debut EP from Hiss and Chambers, a Portland-based quartet combining anthemic rock and dark retro dance stylings. F.I.Y.L: Echo & the Bunnymen, Block Party, the Cure, Interpol,Joy Division, The Editors, Bauhaus, New Order, U2.Featuring singer/guitars Shawn Saindon (Vacationland/Thruthewires), Drummer Ryan Dolan (Sheila Divine/Lincolnville), Mike Hamlin (Peepshow/Vespertine) on guitar and bassist Jasper Rice. In February of 2006, Dolan, Shawn Saindon (guitar, vocal), Jasper Rice (bass, vocal) and Mike Hamlin (guitar) convened to form a new musical relationship. In a room barely larger than a broom closet, the four set to work carving out an identity partly inspired by some home demos Saindon had collected since his departure from Portland rockers Vacationland. Moody but danceable; rock but not vapid, goth but pop. The challenge the Hiss faced and beat in their formation was the balancing what is pure fun and what is artistically important and viable. The sweet spot somewhere in the middle of that conversation is where they landed. Saindon says “We consider ourselves a dance band full of musicians who have never been in a dance band before. The way the Cure or Block Party are a dance bands, I guess. It’s been great to watch the first rows of the audience move to the beat.”Dolan continues, “So we’ve been going at this whole thing with a bit of naivety of the genre, which I think forces what’s coming out the other side to be genuine, or at least an honest vision. Anyway, we were just so tired of audience members staring up into the singer’s nose or at the guitarist’s left hand.”In February of 2007, the band went into Halo Recording Studio with lauded producer and engineer, Jonathan Wyman to record the debut EP Making Eyes featuring the radio and dance floor favorites Decay and Glory #1. Portland and Boston Djs and mix artists have also gotten into the action; J. Hjort and Moshe, among others, are currently hard at work remixing songs from Making Eyes. Listen for these on the dance floor soon. SOME REVIEWS of "MAKING EYES""...You know as soon as you hear it: This is going to be stuck in my head. And you want to hear it over and over again." www.thebollard.com "...Hiss & Chambers deliver dancefloor-friendly, vamped-out tunes that delve into goth and melancholy, but always keep the beat pumping." -The Portland Phoenix"It's entirely fantastic alternative/indie/new wave stuff. Four seconds into listening to the track "Decay" I got that welcome "this is freaking cool alternative music like the way it used it be" kind of feeling. ...Hiss & Chambers don't necessarily sound like these bands, but I did think of Echo & the Bunnymen, the Cure, Joy Division, Bauhaus, New Order, the Cult and, well, you get the idea. But don't get me wrong, Hiss & Chambers aren't trying to be any of these bands, they're just influenced by them. I get it and I am smitten with what I've heard." - Portland Press HeraldFor more Information on HISS & CHAMBERS visit http://www.hissandchambers.com or http://www.myspace.com/hissandchambers. $10.65 (the) gfire (bio)"I guess you could say that Kate Bush is my role model, especially her earlier work like 'The Dreaming.' I dig her more recent works, too, but I remember listening to 'The Dreaming' for the first time and it was just, 'Fantastic!'" -- gfireIt's just possible you may have never heard of gfire, but that's not a state of affairs that's likely to continue, so don't get too comfortable. The universe is overdue for an achingly gorgeous dose of musical honesty, and trust us, gfire's not about to lie to you. Call her what you like -- "singer/songwriter," "classically trained," "decade-long veteran of the 512's phenomenal DJ circuit," "Goddess-about-town" -- but just remember: a square peg with guts, smarts, and heart doesn't give two hoots what shape the hole is.Hailing from Austin, Texas, the legendary Live Music Capital of the World, gfire has established her street cred over the past decade via a strategy of ceaseless touring and figuring things out (i.e. life, the universe, and everything) for herself. Initially a member of Austin's tight-knit DJ community, gfire soon found herself and her artistic abilities constrained by the lockstep BPM gridlock of electronica. So she did what any self-respecting fire goddess would do: She struck out on her own wavelength, splashing into a vast tidal pool of ideas and energy that ultimately resulted in the remarkably powerful "triangle" CD which you hold in your hands. As in all creative journeys -- all the really good ones, we mean -- there were a few pit stops along the way for growth and learning, musical, spiritual and otherwise. A dedicated practitioner of Kundalini Yoga, gfire also teaches voice lessons utilizing the teachings of esteemed British scientist Ernest George White, author of the seminal musical manuscript "Science and Singing" and founder of the Guild of the Voice Beautiful. Says gfire:"At the time, I was having a lot of trouble with regular singing teachers. Nothing made sense and it was difficult to understand the concepts behind the theory, you know? Then I read one of White's books and discovered his take on singing made total sense to me. He approached singing from an entirely scientific method, explaining ...

$15.19 MICHELLE CHAPPEL, Ph.D. (Princeton) left a successful career as a psychology professor to follow her dream to be a rock-n-roll star. She was voted "Most Inspirational Professor of Psychology" at UC Santa Cruz. Two years later her debut CD (PolyGram Records) made the top 10 on the radio charts overseas. For the past decade she has helped thousands of others to follow their dreams. Overcoming Adversity:Born in a small rural village in France, the young Michelle Chappel was raised in Atlanta, Georgia, where she suffered under the unseen shadow of child abuse. Through sheer determination, she was able to escape to schools in other states by winning scholarships, and eventually got a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology. As a professor she quickly gained a dedicated following of students who were inspired by her playfully rebellious teaching style. But deep inside she began to hear her long forgotten melodies calling her on a quest to heal her broken child spirit, and recover the crushed blossom of her musical brilliance. Her songs and workshops are a testament to the journey we must all take to shine as our true selves.Critical Reviews:* "Michelle Chappel has been the top selling local artist at Tower Records (San Jose) for the last six months. Due to this high demand, 'Infinity + 1, man' can now be found alongside other major artists, as well as in the local artist section of the store.” Tower Records Manager, Dan McGurt* "Mysticism, psycho-androgyny, lyrical hooks and catchy melodies, this guitar based production should corner a considerable amount of airplay." Music BIZ Magazine* "Chappel warbles impassioned alternative rock singles with enticing vocals, radio-friendly hooks, and a catchy, quirky sound inhabiting the admittedly yawning chasm between Alanis Morissette and Ani DiFranco.” The East Bay Express* "Now she's an acclaimed songwriter putting out some cool and unusual guitar rock like the Alanis-meets-rockabilly number 'Kill Me Dead.” The Good Times, Santa Cruz* "The audience seemed to love her, students and older people alike. Each song from Michelle's debut CD was punctuated by ...
