This sampler is comprised of performances from several different Monterey Jazz Festivals, spanning 41 years. Some of the selections (those featuring Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, and Sarah Vaughan) were released elsewhere in the first batch in this series of previously unavailable Monterey performances. One can assume that the other seven songs will probably be in future releases. Just judged by itself, the most rewarding selections of this sampler are an inspired Thelonious Monk romp on "Rhythm-A-Ning," an excellent "Someday My Prince Will Come" by the Dave Brubeck Quartet, Joe Henderson's exploration of "Isotope," and Dizzy Gillespie's happy calypso "Poor Joe." Most of the other performances, including the 1963 Miles Davis Quintet on "Autumn Leaves" and Jimmy Witherspoon's humorous "S.K. Blues" have their moments of interest. Serious collectors will prefer the more complete sets while listeners wanting a sampling of jazz greats will find this to be a useful release. [An edition was released in 2007 that included the Dave Brubeck Quartet's performance of "Sleep" as a bonus.] ~ Scott Yanow

Review:BALTHAUS/LUMEIJ/GRIMBERGENGershwinHi5 RecordsDirk Balthaus (piano), Joep Lumeij (double bass / guitar) and Inigo Grimbergen (drums) took up the challenge to record again fourteen of George Gershwin’s well-known standards (1898-1937). It takes courage to interpret such well-known material with the pretension of producing a listenable album. Particularly in the classical trio setting you will fail miserably if you don’t have something special to tell. However, the cd, simply entitled ‘Gershwin’ is an excellent album. It is, of course, the richness of Gershwin’s compositions that makes listening such a pleasure. The album contains fourteen interpretations where choices have been made, arrangements compiled and accents placed. The listener will be impressed by this trio’s lectures. The title could have been ‘Gershwin reinvented’ as this is jazz of the highest level, both inventive and creative. It is new discovery for Gershwin, who is generally recognised ...

Ssmooth has been an underground favorite in his hometown of Phoenix, Arizona, since the early 1990’s when Dr. Dre and Snoop were at the beginning of their successful careers with Death Row Records. Ssmooth, growing up in one of the hot spots for crime in South Phoenix, deterred from the life of crime and was determined to be successful in life. He used poetry to express his feelings and later turned his poetic mind to music. Coming up with subject matter was not hard at all when you grow up in a neighborhood infested with poverty and crime. During his high school years, Ssmooth attended house parties and would freestyle on the microphone for entertainment. It wasn’t until many of the attendees began requesting more and more of Ssmooth on the microphone, did he decide that this was his calling. He would hang out with a group of close friends that he ended up naming the “Kuruption Party Krew”. Ssmooth later turned this party crew into his own independent record label “Kuruption Phoenix Krew Records” or what is known by the masses as "KPK Records". Ssmooth joined friends, Ralu and Antz of Blow Up Productions to begin Ssmooth's first solo project, "Just A Taste". Once Ssmooth began his project, he ran into D.J. 2-Swift who had just begun his production studio. Swift ended up producing every track on Ssmooth's debut album. The album was released in 2002 under KPK Records and Blow Up Productions. The “Just A Taste” project gained international attention with sales that reached as far east as Japan. During the recording of this album, Ssmooth was attending college in an effort to complete a goal he set as a young child, to graduate with an undergraduate degree. With the success of his inaugural album, Ssmooth had a choice to make, either complete his life long goal for a higher education or continue in the rap game. He was confident that the music will always be in his heart and decided to take 2 years off and finish his undergraduate degree. In 2004, Ssmooth graduated from college and was back in the studio. This time with a young protĂ©gĂ© named “Fabulous One”. They formed a group called “F1S” and released their album in 2006 with the assistance of Ralu. This particular album opened many doors for the two rising stars. They toured the local circuit, networked, and formed a strong bond. This bond was to be tested when Ssmooth advised Fabulous One that he was going to start recording his second solo project. No animosity prevailed and Fabulous One went on to record his own album. Ssmooth and long time friend Ralu began their sleepless night ...
