The Pietasters have undergone personnel changes since being formed in Washington, D.C., in 1990, but they have seen their greatest upheavals in recent years, which may help explain why All Day is their first studio album of new material since 2002. Already by the time of the release of the previous album, Turbo, they had suffered the loss of bassist and songwriter Todd Eckhardt, who died of a heart infection in November 2001, although this was not reflected on that disc. Since then, another longtime member, guitarist and songwriter Tom Goodin, has departed. Toby Hansen, who had played trumpet in the group, has moved over to guitar, but the major addition to the lineup is Jorge Pezzimenti, whose participation as bassist, guitarist, keyboardist, singer, songwriter, and producer of the album rivals the preeminence of the Pietasters' founder, gruff-voiced singer Stephen Jackson. But despite these changes, the band's musical approach is much the same. The inner sleeve of the CD package provides a good indication of the contents. It displays mock-ups of 45-rpm records, as if each song on the album had once appeared on a 7" single in the 1960s or '70s. The labels of the faux discs indicate the musical styles of the songs -- some are on the purple Motown label, with the map of Detroit in the upper section, others are re-creations of the Jamaican Trojan label, etc. The label signals whether the song is arranged to sound like '60s pop-soul, reggae, or ska. (There is also one track, "So Long," done as garage rock, that would fit nicely on the Nuggets compilation.) The Pietasters are proudly retro, but as a third-generation outfit, their performances are just that much more removed from the sources. When they play Motown, they sound more like the Foundations than the Funk Brothers; their ska is more reminiscent of the English Beat than the Skatalites; and their reggae recalls UB40 rather than Bob Marley & the Wailers. Fans of the styles may care only that the Pietasters are reverent about their favored music, that they are fans themselves moved to emulation. ~ William Ruhlmann

All Day music CDs
$16.45 Spacecraft is an unusual group that formed after seeing a series of NASA images and sound mappings sent from the Voyager space probe. Amazed by the textures and atmospheres of the audio recordings, they set out to make music that didn't imitate it, but was clearly inspired by it. Named after the Hummel Planetarium at Eastern Kentucky University, where it was recorded, HUMMEL is a live album of synthesizers, guitar, and voice that evokes the vastness of space while making the idea tangible and enjoyable for its loyal fans. Proud purveyors of space music, Spacecraft has a complex sound that is reminiscent ...

| | Petula Clark Essential CD (2003) Import
All Day album
$8.59 All of Petula Clark's greatests hits are here on THE ESSENTIAL including "I Will Follow Him" and "Downtown."
Petula Clark had already logged seven Top Ten singles in her native Britain by the time she hitched a ride on the British Invasion in late 1964 to achieve stardom in the U.S. with the number one classic "Downtown." By the end of the '60s she had scored six Top Tens in the U.S. and nearly a dozen at home, and her place near the top of the pantheon of British female singers was secured, if short-lived. Essential, then, might be expected to contain all of her major hits, but it falls short. Even if one discounts the American charts -- this is, after all, a British release -- the set is derelict in its omissions of "I Couldn't Live Without Your Love" (number six U.K.) and "My Love" (number four U.K.), both of which were also Top Ten hits in the U.S. And although "I Know a Place" only reached number 17 in the U.K., it was a number three record in the U.S. and certainly more worthy than some of the lesser inclusions here (do we really need to hear her cover of "Games People Play"?). One could also make a case for the chipper "A Sign of the Times," a 1966 single that just missed the Top Ten in America but didn't come close in the U.K. That leaves "Downtown," "Don't Sleep in the Subway" and, most significantly, the Charlie Chaplin-penned "This Is My Song" (number one ...

| | Daevid Allen Good Morning CD (1976)
All Day music CDs
$18.79 Daevid Allen is best known as the leader of the wild '70s psychedelic/fusion/prog outfit Gong. GOOD MORNING was his first album after leaving the group, and it marks a drastic change of direction. Abandoning Gong's mind-bending psychedelia and jazzy virtuosity, he concentrates on a gentler, more acoustic, song-based approach.
Daevid Allen's flights of fancy and cheerful hippie proselytizing have given birth to projects as diverse as the progressive rock of Gong as well as naturalistic solo works such as Good Morning. This record was recorded in 1976, six years after Allen's last solo outing, Banana Moon. It differs markedly from that record, as well as his group work with Gong. Good Morning is more acoustic, with no drums, and was recorded on a four-track tape machine at Allen's Majorcan home, "Bananamoon Observatory." As with Gong, Allen plays his cosmic-effected "glissando" guitar, and he calls on girlfriend Gilli Smyth for her signature "space whisper." Additionally, he employs an unknown Spanish group called Euterpe. The songs here merge together well and have ...
