| | Donnas Bitchin' CD Donnas Discography of CDs
(4 Customer Reviews)
Putting aside entirely their early roots in the post-Green Day pop-punk scene alongside fellow Lookout! Records alumni like the Mr. T Experience, BITCHIN' completes the mainstream makeover of the Donnas as a sort of post-modern cross between Pat Benatar and HYSTERIA-era Def Leppard. BITCHIN' is a glossy-sounding hard rock album that features only the barest trace of the band's earlier sound.
However, this is no bad thing: the Donnas' clear antecedents, the Runaways, were never interested in staying in the punk rock ghetto: witness the far more commercially successful careers of Lita Ford, Joan Jett, and even bassist Michael Steele in the Bangles. The candy-coated pop rock of BITCHIN' is entirely in keeping with the sound and spirit of the Donnas' pioneering forebears. Highlights include the snarky title track and "Wasted."

Donnas
Rolling Stone (p.96) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]heir straightforward approach and succinct tunes still make for freewheeling fun..." Uncut (p.98) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]hey've evolved into dedicated keepers of the classic, American stadium-rock flame....The LP's swagger wins through." Alternative Press (p.170) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A}ce guitarist Allison Robertson shreds like mullets never went out of style on the heavier-than-bricks title track and the boogie-blasted 'Smoke You Out.'" Bitchin' Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Good..but not great The CD overall sounds good. The songs are catchy and listenable. However, it is below the "Spend the Night" level.
They have become a bit to commercial,
they have lost the hard rock edge they once had.

Bitchin' close, but not quite on target The Donnas are following a twisty path, and occasionally they're going to lose their way. On albums like Get Skintight, Turn 21 (their best so far), and the unjustly criticized Gold Medal, the Donnas were a confident, self-assured band with an often raw, unfettered sound that bristled with unapologetic mainstream hard-rock references while maintaining a punky attitude and esthetic. On Bitchin', they are too serious, trying too hard. If this were the first Donnas album I had heard, I would dismiss them as unoriginal, boring and mechanical. Brett Anderson's declamatory vocals do not work with the retro heavy arena rock-pop (cf. Def Leppard) stylings on Bitchin'. The overall sound is also colder and more "digital" than that on Turn 21 or Gold Medal, similar to the weak, overly slick effort that was Spend The Night, the Donnas' major-label debut. Impressive on Bitchin', as always, are the band's instrumental chops, and the album is worth listening to just for Allison Robertson's guitar work -- she's among the very best in the axe-slinging biz today. Overall, a 5 out of 10. I don't think the Donnas have yet found their true voice. Submitted by Miles (Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Top marks for the Donnas Perhaps this album won't sell among the typical Donnas fans, but if you dig the heavier sound with the "garagy" effect out there, then Bitchin' will do for you. Songs like "Don't wait up for me" and "Wasted" nand othes have that "glamy" touch which makes the diff. "Bitchin'" could have been longer, but the siren is there to tell us the gals are rockin' out for us.Donnas fan cannot ignore this album in any case. Bitchin' album
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone ...

Bitchin' CD music
$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided into "Act I" and "Act II" will latch onto SOUTHERN ...
| | Donnas Spend The Night CD (2002)
Bitchin' music CDs
$7.09 At the risk of offending classicists, the Donnas are the great girl-punk group the Runaways were meant to be some 25 years earlier. Smartly, they avoid the codified copycat punk moves of the post-Green Day set and instead focus on the mid-'70s sound typified by the likes of the Ramones, the Dictators, and yes, the aforementioned rebel chicks. Accordingly, they manage the neat trick of beating the Strokes, Vines, etc. at their own game without even trying. As on their previous four (!) albums, the still-young Donnas provide a non-stop barrage of heavy ...
| | ZZ Top Mescalero CD (2003)
Bitchin' songs
$8.49 Still chugging along three decades after members of Houston garage bands the Moving Sidewalks and the American Blues united in 1970, this little ol' band from Texas makes its mark on 2003 with MESCALERO, the trio's first album in four years. As one of the first blues-rock power trios to fuse synthesizers with their straightforward brand of boogie, ZZ Top continues down this same path throughout these 16 songs. The difference is the Tex-Mex border brushed-on flavor, be it the bilingual title cut, the techno-mariachi that is the Spanish-sung "Que Lastima," or the Dia de Los Muertos-inspired cover art. Also present and accounted for is the group's salacious sense of humor, ...

Bitchin' songs
$12.79 Hall & Oates, once synonymous with trendsetting, radio-friendly eighties pop music, join forces again after years of mostly solo experimentation. The result is an exciting comeback album of pure pop which is occasionally reminiscent of the duo's best early-eighties hits, but which also incorporates new sounds. Check out the exotic, Indian-influenced percussion on "Marigold Sky," Dave Stewart's Eurythmic-style wailing guitar on "Romeo is Bleeding" and "Love Out Loud," and the hints of hip-hop rhythms scattered throughout. This is Hall & Oates nineties style, turning their smooth, soul-flavored harmonies in a more contemporary direction. The lyrics of "Time Won't Pass Me By" seem especially appropriate: ...
| | Michael J Sheehy No Longer My Concern CD (2002)
Bitchin' album
$22.09 True to form, Michael J. Sheehy's third solo album isn't a particularly happy affair. If, after Sweet Blue Gene and Ill Gotten Gains, it seemed that things couldn't possibly get any worse for the self-proclaimed "short, bald fella," No Longer My Concern proves otherwise. Here, he continues down a murky, confessional path, spinning tales of excessive boozing, sordid sex, self-loathing, and all-consuming ennui. As with Sheehy's previous records, stripped-down rock & roll, swamp blues, and some deceptively beautiful ballads provide a soundtrack to the dark night of his tortured soul. This is indeed black mood music and, by Sheehy's own admission, these songs are often personal, but, as usual, his self-deprecating humor and wicked sense of irony save them from becoming maudlin. With its cool, finger-snapping rockabilly beat and sassy female backing vocals, "Donkey Ride Straight to Hell" is a case-in-point, chronicling the experience of being dumped for a better-endowed suitor. Similarly tongue-in-cheek, "Pigboy" simmers with bluesy self-hatred ("When I catch my reflection/I don't like what I see," complains Sheehy). In Sheehy's quieter moments, his moody melodies and soulful crooning have prompted comparisons with arch miserablists like Tindersticks; such comparisons are borne out by the haunted, slow-burning "Teardrop Time" and the brooding "Dark Country Moment." Sheehy has always had a flair for acoustic numbers with a distinctly hymnal feel and this album offers further evidence of that talent, especially on "Distracting Yourself From the Doom," with its lilting piano and standup bass. While ...
