KILL TO GET CRIMSON, Mark Knopfler's fifth solo album since folding Dire Straits in the mid 1990s, continues the trend of his solo work back to the sound and feel of the British folk revival of the 1960s and '70s. While Dire Straits was a very British version of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band circa BORN TO RUN, specializing in well-constructed epic pop-rock tunes, KILL TO GET CRIMSON suggests that Knopfler's true heart is in favorites like Pentangle and Fairport Convention. The songs on KILL TO GET CRIMSON are all originals, but they build upon old Scottish, English, and Irish folk forms, as on the ballads "The Scaffolder's Wife" and "The Fish and the Bird." Those expecting a new "Money For Nothing" might be disappointed, but KILL TO GET CRIMSON shows a new depth to the guitarist and singer's recasting of vintage British folk-rock.

Rolling Stone (p.77) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t's a gem....Knopfler has dedicated himself to making music that blends the deep resonance of traditional folk with the off-kilter edginess he brought to his former [group]..." Uncut (p.93) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] more studiedly English collection, full of easy folk melodies sung in an attractive burr and burnished with classily restrained guitar licks." Dirty Linen (p.73) - "The collection is varied, layered, and rich, a good substantive listen." No Depression (p.99) - "The songs on KILL TO GET CRIMSON are sharply drawn -- most notably 'True Love Will Never Fade'..." Anyway if you need some napping music buy this CD. I probably won't keep this one Submitted by bobbyc9842 (Dallas, Tx USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
again we are being graced with MK's music since old dire straits times, back in 1977. In his solo cds, we can really understand what is the musical culture of this master. Not only rock and some amazing guitar solos, but also a musical culture from Scotland and American. Listen this cd alone in the first few times and you will see how it grows quickly and you can't leave it anymore! Submitted by soroa (brazil) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Wonderful Performance From A Genuine Artist I am a musician favoring blues and quality rock and roll. Mr. Knopfler's talent is brilliantly augmented by his creative restraint. There seemingly are too few performers today with either the inclination or creative sensitivity to pull off what Mark has done with the majority of the songs on this recording. Bravo and bravo again. Submitted by Johnnie (Erie, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A True Masterpiece This album is what I would call an epic. I have now recommended it to at least 15 people who, after buying the album, have been completely blown away by the emotionality of the singing, the playing and the melodic intensity of these songs. This album is Marky at HIS roots, and it would not be a stretch at all to put this album in the category of an Abbey Road. It is THAT good.

Kill To Get Crimson
$9.29 Mark Knopfler's first excursions outside of Dire Straits were film soundtracks, where his guitar mastery served him well. Starting in the mid-1990s, he embarked on a proper post-Straits solo career. By the time of 2004's SHANGRI-LA, Knopfler had almost entirely left behind the expansive instrumental ...

Kill To Get Crimson
$16.45 Guess Who’s Home is an 18 song tribute to the band that Rolling Stone called “One of rock’s most consistently fascinating maverick bands.” What we’ve got here is a true testament to the incredible song writing of The Guess Who. Not only do their songs stand the test of time, they also withstand treatments, and flourish, in a mighty big spectrum of genres.Whether it’s the crazed bluegrass of the D.Rangers on Runnin’ Back to Saskatoon , the Scorchin’ Blues of Big Dave McLean on Seven Long Years, the psychedelic tinged roots of The Scott Nolan Band on Guns, Guns, Guns, or The Fabulous Kildonan’s, with their manic take on Bus Rider, every song on Guess Who’s Home is re-created with a hometown passion. In a city where St. Randy and St. Burton have long been deified, ...
| | Epica Divine Conspiracy CD (2007)
Kill To Get Crimson
$12.89 After two albums of generally finely crafted symphonic metal, Dutch ensemble Epica decided to indulge their orchestral kinks to the fullest with 2005's metal-free The Score: An Epic Journey, but they are back to their usual, genre-meshing stomping grounds with 2007's The Divine Conspiracy, which many fans will likely consider their proper third opus. Whatever the case may be, the album gets under way with the entirely symphonic "Indigo" prologue, before slamming into the metallic portion of the program with "The Obsessive Devotion." This, in typical Epica fashion, showcases not only the angelic soprano of Simone Simons, but also a manly baritone choir and ever more demonic death grunts from bandleader Mark Jansen -- ...

However, our friends and fans expressed a desire to hear more of these songs, and that led to the creation of this album. Most of the songs you can hear on this recording are taken from the repertoire of well known local Folk groups. Others are reworked versions of material from our previous albums. Our passion is to play olden songs of the war and mythology of our forefathers. In that respect, this album is no different from those we have recorded in the past. It is our tribute to ancient Latvian history, culture and folklore.” Band history:Skyforger have been tempering their music in the smithy of the Thundergod since 1995. For the last decade, the band has been fighting under the flag of Latvian Pagan Metal; an extreme blend of traditional Baltic Folk music and various Metal influences ranging from Norwegian inspired Black Metal through to 80s-rooted Heavy Metal. The band's unique combination of ancient and modern influence has given them a wide appeal throughout both the Metal and Folk scenes, and has brought great variety to their song writing over the course of the five Skyforger albums. The first of these was unleashed from the forge in 1997. Titled 'Semigalls' Warchant', the demo-album told tales of the last free Pagan tribes of the Baltic peoples; and their struggles with Christian invaders throughout the thirteenth century. The album's music is heavily inspired by the Scandinavian Black Metal of the early nineties. Harsh and cold, the extremity is balanced by traditional Folk instruments, which anchor the venomous brutality firmly in the past; never loosing sight of the ancestral legends the music ...
