37 Minuti album
$11.99 The music of Dead Can Dance has long been a favorite of the "Goth" crowd; however, AION is really the first one of the band's records that can actually be called Gothic in the classic, renaissance sense. Arguably Dead Can Dance's most successful record, it contains the band's most consistent set of songs since SPLEEN AND IDEAL. Widening their view to encompass more of the ancient world than with earlier records, Dead Can Dance explore styles from Northern Europe ("The Song of the Sibyl") to the Middle East ("Radharc"), with stops along the way at a number of other surprising locations.
The fact that it is based on a 16th-century Catalan chant notwithstanding, portions of "The Song of the Sibyl" are eerily reminiscent of the experimental side of David Bowie's LOW. Standouts ...
| | Paco De Lucia Guitar Trio CD (1996)
37 Minuti CD music
$11.49 Guitar Trio is an excellent collaborative effort from three of the finest jazz guitarists of the post-rock & roll era: Paco de Lucía, John McLaughlin, and Al di Meola. Throughout the record, the trio doesn't just showcase their instrumental skills; they demonstrate their musicality. This is sympathetic, emotional musicianship, where each musician complements each other instead of trying to out-do the ...
| | Israel Iz Kamakawiwo'Ole Alone In Iz World CD (2001)
37 Minuti music CDs
$13.29 While the name Israel Kamakawiwo'ole falls trippingly off few tongues, the Hawaiian singer better known as "Iz" was one of the biggest stars in his home state. Iz first came to public attention as a member of the popular Hawaiian group known as the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau. His subsequent solo career brought even greater fame, and countless fans were saddened at his untimely death in 1997. Those who mourn his passing will be gladdened by the posthumous release of ALONE IN IZ WORLD, compiled from various recording session outtakes.
While one might expect a big, deep sound to emanate from a gargantuan-sized body like that of Iz, the hefty singer actually possessed a gorgeous, fragile tenor voice full of tenderness and delicacy. That voice is put to use here on tunes that alternate between voice-and-ukelele solo performances (Iz was no slouch on ...

| | Bob Marley Catch A Fire: Deluxe Edition CDs (1973) Remastered; Deluxe Edition
37 Minuti album
$19.59 It is nearly impossible to imagine a time when reggae was not part of the cultural currency. Though Bob Marley and the Wailers cannot be said to have invented the style, they certainly brought it to the world stage, and this album was the torch that lit the way. CATCH A FIRE hit with the force of a revelation when it was released in 1973, and though Chris Blackwell tailored its sound with a rock audience in mind, the album was still unlike anything that had ever come down the pike. Ironically, even given its relatively full production and electric guitar solos, CATCH A FIRE sounds more organic and rootsy than any of the Wailers' subsequent releases.
While the percolating rhythms and burbling bass lines of the Barrett brothers, and the sweet, impeccable harmonies of Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer soothe and move, CATCH A FIRE also introduces the conscious, politically minded themes that would remain at the center of Marley's songwriting for the rest of his career. "Concrete Jungle," one of the towering standout tracks, addresses the trap of inner cities, while "Slave ...

| | Bonnie Russell Mountain Dulcimer Galax Style CD (1995)
37 Minuti music CDs
$13.85 Bonnie Russell/The Russell Family includes: Bonnie Russell, Roscoe Russell, Roy Russell.
The mountain dulcimer, which is also often called the fretted, lap or Appalachian dulcimer, had a somewhat limited use in the southern mountains, but thanks to Jean Ritchie and others, has had a revival of sorts since the urban folk boom of the 1960s. Although ideally suited to accompany the old modal tunes of the Appalachians, the instrument's chief weakness was its inability to project loudly in a string band setting, leaving that ground to resonator banjos, acoustic guitars and fiddles. This delightful album by Bonnie Russell & the Russell Family could well change that perception of the lap dulcimer as a parlor rather than a dance instrument, though, since the traditional tunes presented here are all done at a brisk clip, and the feel is more like a fiddle-led string band than anything ...

| | Shir Israeli Songs CD (2004) (Import) United Kingdom
37 Minuti CD music
$24.95 From a mishmash of British, American, and Israeli musicians comes Shir, a group of relatively young musicians playing Israeli songs. The tone remains somewhat light throughout the proceedings, thanks in large part to Piotr Jordan's violin work and the light vocals from Maurice Chernick and Ivor Goldberg. The songs chosen for the album are primarily from the current nation of Israel, that is to say post-WWII. The songs are largely on the joyous end, or at least optimistic, and the music carries the mood quite well. The few that don't stem from the modern Israeli state include the classic "Hava Nagila" and "Bashana Haba'ah." Overall, the album is mildly standard in sound, but there is something to be said for ...
