The Complete Anthology album
$33.75 The Small Faces present their four disc U.K. import reissue release OGDEN'S NUT GONE FLAKE.
Having begun their career as the archetypal Mod band, the Small Faces latterly embraced traces of flower-power's whimsy. Astute enough not to sacrifice their identity, the quartet retained a distinctive perspective, as evinced by a string of superb pop singles, including "Here Comes The Nice" and "Itchycoo Park." A sense of pop melody and adventurism culminated on this album which encompassed tongue-in-cheek fun ("Lazy Sunday") and passionate love songs ("Afterglow"). Steve Marriott's voice remains completely self-assured and the group's characteristic organ-based swell is often enhanced by P.P. Arnold's emotional backing vocals. Eccentric comedian Stanley Unwin narrates the concept suite "Happiness Stan," but the music is strong enough to withstand the novelty tag. OGDENS' NUT GONE FLAKE was the Small Faces' swan-song, at least until an ill-starred reunion, but ...
| | Wonder Stuff Live At The BBC CDs (2007) England
The Complete Anthology CD music
$26.79 Indie undergrounders turned grebo heroes turned pop monsters the Wonder Stuff's alternate history is revealed via their British radio appearances on BBC Sessions. We first meet the Stuff in late 1987, playing a quartet of songs recorded for Radio One DJ Janice Long, all of which would reappear on their debut album The Eight Legged Groove Machine. At the time, the group were already ferociously finding their stylistic feet, and an insouciance worthy of the Small Faces helped lay the foundation for the entire Brit-pop movement to come. By the summer of 1991, when the Stuff recorded their next radio session, they were already huge stars, and their pop transformation was complete. A year later, the BBC caught them in all their glory ...

| | Lloyd Cole Live At The BBC, Vol. 1 CD (2007) England
The Complete Anthology album
$12.79 Live at the BBC, Vol. 1 gathers all of the BBC radio sessions recorded by Lloyd Cole & the Commotions around the time of their instant classic debut album Rattlesnakes. (Vol. 2, released at the same time, contains the sessions related to second album Easy Pieces and a full 1986 live set recorded at that year's Glastonbury Festival.) Opening with a pre-LP set on Saturday Live -- signed to a major label almost as soon as they were formed, they were never indie enough to rate a Peel Session -- the first three songs are the sound of a band in its tentative stages. Opening with a cover of Television's "Glory" makes their major influences just a bit too clear, and on both "Patience" and debut single "Perfect Skin," Cole's oddly mannered vocals clash a bit with the band's uncharacteristically ragged sound. By the time of a four-song set on the Richard Skinner set, Cole's vocals are much improved and the band's playing is considerably tighter; only the stripped-down arrangements of songs like "Rattlesnakes" and "Speedboat" differentiate these live tracks from ...
| | Byrds: Live At Royal Albert Hall 1971 CD (2008)
The Complete Anthology CD music
$13.89 Although the original lineup of the Byrds gets the most critical attention, and to the greatest extent it probably should, the fact remains that the late-era version of this band, the one that featured founding member Roger McGuinn and Clarence White on guitars, Skip Battin on bass, and Gene Parsons on drums, was the most stable one the group ever had, and by far the best live unit. Between 1969 and 1972 this incarnation of the Byrds recorded five albums and toured relentlessly and their shows, thanks in no small part to the guitar interplay between McGuinn and the truly astounding White, were wonderfully balanced affairs that featured all of the Byrds' stylistic phases -- from folk-rock to country to bluegrass and space music and beyond -- rolled into a thoroughly professional package. This set, taken from a May 13, 1971 concert at Royal Albert Hall, captures that sound and this version of the Byrds at a peak, ...

| | Le Loup Throne Of The Third Heaven Of The Nations' Millennium General Assembly CD (2007)
The Complete Anthology CD music
$10.39 Although The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations' Millennium General Assembly is billed as Le Loup's debut, it's technically a solo effort by frontman Sam Simkoff, who recorded these tracks in his bedroom during a lengthy period of post-college anxiety. As a result, fans of Le Loup's live performances will find this album to be markedly different, from the number of instruments used to the softer dynamics of each track. The Nations' Millennium General Assembly largely relies on synths, banjo, drum machines, and Simkoff's vocals, all of which are stacked together to create a sort of Sufjan-approved computer symphony. It's a one-man show that uses repetition to its advantage, with each song slowly growing from ...
