| | Tift Merritt Bramble Rose CD (2002)
Live Hits CD music
$12.59 In his short story Billy the Kid, Steve Earle spun the tale of a fresh-faced kid who arrived in Nashville with a handful of brilliant songs, cut a stone classic album, scored a record deal most musicians would give their eye teeth to get, and married the girl of his dreams, all in a few weeks before cruel fate caught up with him. While one can only hope the powers that be have a more generous final act planned for Tift Merritt, listening to her first album, Bramble Rose, is a reminder that such things could possibly happen in the real world. If Bramble Rose is a bit short of perfect, it leaves no doubt that Merritt is already a talent of the first order. As a singer, she has a simply gorgeous vocal instrument (imagine the passion of Lucinda Williams and the real-world twang of Iris Dement fused with the silky beauty of Emmylou Harris), and her songs are nearly as impressive as her vocals. At 27, Merritt's lyrical perspective speaks of the often-unfortunate twists and turns of fate, but without bitterness or spite, and she can jump from the wistful sway of "Virginia, No One Can Warn You" to the R&B-influenced bite of "Neighborhood" and back to the classic weeper ...
| | Caitlin Cary I'm Staying Out CD (2003)
Live Hits music CDs
$13.69 On her second album as a solo artist, 2001's I'M STAYING OUT, former Whiskeytown fiddler Caitlin Cary builds on the strength of her debut, WHILE YOU WEREN'T LOOKING, while expanding her sound with producer Chris Stamey of the DBs to include more fleshed-out arrangements and instrumentation. Cary is supported this time out by a stellar lineup of guest stars including jangle rock veterans Don Dixon and Mitch Easter, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Bruce Springsteen cellist Jane Scarpantoni. Cary impresses most, of course, ...

$7.59 In some ways, 1973's ON THE THIRD DAY is the first "true" ELO album. Though co-founder Roy Wood had left the band to form the more experimental Wizzard after the first album, his influence ...
| | Dwight Twilley Twilley / Scuba Divers CD (2006) (Import) Reissue; Australia
Live Hits album
$19.99 Dwight Twilley is one of the great overlooked artists in American pop history. After creating two incredibly fine guitar pop records with Phil Seymour, Twilley struck out on his own and released the very good Twilley album in 1979 and the lesser but still exceedingly listenable Scuba Divers in 1982. Raven has done Twilley fans the service of releasing both on one disc and throwing in the "Money"/"Somebody to Love" single from 1979. Twilley is no great departure for Twilley and indeed features a handful of songs he had been stockpiling for years. The band features many of the same musicians from the previous albums, most notably guitarist Bill Pitcock IV, while songs like "Nothing's Ever Gonna Change So Fast," "Betsy Sue," and "Runaway" are the kind of classicly structured, lushly produced, and passionately performed power pop gems Twilley cranked out like a machine. What makes the album work is the variety of songs (a nice mix ...
