Pianist McCoy Tyner and tenor-saxophonist Joe Henderson had not recorded together in over two decades when they finally met up for this Chesky CD. With strong assistance from bassist Ron Carter and drummer Al Foster, Tyner and Henderson make for a perfect team on four originals by group members (including the tenor's classic "Recorda Me") and four superior standards. The advanced hard bop music is as rewarding as one would expect. ~ Scott Yanow
Recorded At RCA Studio A, New York, New York on April 3-4, 1991. Includes liner notes by Bret Primack.
Personnel: McCoy Tyner (piano); Joe Henderson (tenor saxophone); Ron Carter (bass); Al Foster (drums).

| New York Reunion Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Superb performances, mind-blowing sound I have only listened to the SACD layer of this disc so far, so that is what I"m reviewing. (Stereo only, no multichannel.)
I was completely blown away by how natural the sound is. The liner notes indicate great attention was paid to the miking, cabling and signal path, and I think that care shows in the final sound. There is a great amount of dynamic range, so you have to turn it up louder than you might expect, but you will hear every nuance of the music as if the band was in your living room. The high-hat shimmers, you can hear Ron Carter's finger's slapping the bass strings, and the valves on Henderson's sax opening and closing.
About the music: There are some beautiful ballads on this disc (Ask Me Now, Beautiful Love), as well as some more exploratory tracks ("Quick Sketch, A" is a favorite of mine).
The CD Universe entry shows this as being on Telarc, but the CD and case are labeled Chesky all over. The audio quality of this disc has me seeking out more discs from Chesky.

| | Jamal Follow Your Bliss CD (2006)
New York Reunion music CDs
$13.15 "This cat is telling a beautiful story! For a profound lesson on the subject of musical insights “Follow Your Bliss” is a must own disc!" -Brent-Anthony Johnson (For the full review,,,keep reading!) Exploding onto the scene with his jaw dropping Bass Improvisations, Jamal Hurse has been compared to sounding like “Jaco on Acid!” and is fast becoming known as a “musician’s musician” that EVERYONE can enjoy. Born with a profound hearing loss, Jamal is a Solo Instrumentalist, who has developed his own innovative style weaving multiple layers of melody and sounds at the same time, whatt you hear is how he played it! Insisting that the music be human, full of passion and emotion, Jamal at times has little regard to meter or tempo. It is truly a fantastic ride that he takes us on, riding the waves of sound that he produces through his Fretless 4-string Bass. There is no denying that this music comes from another realm, and that not everyone who hears it is prepared for its impact. Influenced by Artists such as Beethoven, Ornette Coleman, Jimi Hendrix, Charlie Parker, Mike Watt, Angelo Moore, Louis Armstrong, Al DiMeola, Ronnie Montrose, and Ignacy Jan Paderewski, combined with a traditional musical background, Jamal is meditative, melodious, and serene in one moment, then suddenly spins a full 180 into a sound that kicks you in the gut and leaves you scrambling to find your jaw somewhere in the rubble that was once your mind. Jamal, at 41, is now emerging from his self-induced sabbatical from the public with his totally unique and innovative style that has evoked strong emotions in many a listener. With a “no rules...just express yourself!” attitude towards just about everything in life, Jamal shares this love of life, passions, and his own artistic expression through his music, and has taken the role the of Fretless ...
