This is a most unusual entry in the discographies of both Tom Grant and Rebecca Kilgore. Grant is best known as a cheerful crossover keyboardist usually heard in pleasant commercial settings. Kilgore is one of the best swing singers of the past 20 years, usually performing with her BED group and invigorating songs of the 1930s, '40s, and '50s with her charm, perfect note placement, and natural swing. Winter Warm is something very different for both of the co-leaders. This is a set of Christmas songs that they perform as duets and (for eight of the 14 numbers) trios with bassist Dave Captein. Familiar Yuletide favorites alternate with such lesser-known pieces as Dave Frishberg's "Snowbound," "Christmas Dreaming," and Burt Bacharach's "Winter Warm." Kilgore sings the material very simply, sticking close to the melodies and giving the themes a great deal of warmth and happiness without improvising much. Grant serves as the perfect accompanist, is tasteful in his short solos, and takes a few effective vocals, harmonizing with Kilgore on "Christmas Dreaming." The unlikely combination works quite well with the music sounding as if two (and sometimes three) old friends simply got together to perform some of their favorite Christmas songs. ~ Scott Yanow

$15.45 Drummer Pip Pyle is not exactly a household name in North America, but he was a major player in the English Canterbury scene of the early 1970s, occupying the drum chair on Gong's highly influential Camembert Electrique, co-founding Hatfield and the North and then working with National Health until it shut down in 1980. Subsequently, Pyle has played regularly in guitarist Phil Miller's jazz fusion band In Cahoots, fronted his own band Equip'Out from 1984 to 1995, and more recently formed Bash!, which makes its recorded debut on this live concert date (actually two dates -- one at Le Triton in Paris, and the other at a prog rock festival in Seattle, Washington). In short, Pyle is a seasoned veteran of the drum kit who, in his new group, has surrounded himself with British and French musicians of similar talents and experience. Some American jazz musicians have excelled in the understated jazz fusion style favored by Bash! -- Pat Metheny certainly comes to mind, along with early versions of Chick Corea's Return to Forever, when the cosmic vibe and egos were under control. But there's something quintessentially British about the mixture of jazz and rock that first emerged in Canterbury circles back in the late 1960s. American fusion (again, with notable exceptions) characteristically falls too much either on the jazz side or the rock side, and tends to be all chops (flash and dash) or, in later years, a slave to MIDI technology and bland and boring MOR licks (smooth jazz, lite jazz, easy listening jazz, etc.) Bash! (in spite of the name) is decidedly easy on the ears, but there's both a delicacy and a satisfying complexity to the music. The compositions, all written by group members (the majority by Pyle) are melodic and interactive. Keyboardist Alex Maguire plays both acoustic and electric pianos, and doubles on organ, guitarist Patrice Meyer uses effects boxes to get several different sounds out of his guitar (including a distinct Pat Metheny sound). Bassist Fred Baker not only ...

$12.85 Zoot Sims fans have a reason to rejoice for this club date was never released on record before this 2007 CD. Sims, who was in his Pablo period, is heard throughout at the peak of his powers. Joined by a superb rhythm section, Sims plays six familiar standards, the obscure "In the Middle of a Kiss," Gary McFarland's "Blue Hodge," and his closing blues "Morning Fun." Zoot, who switches to soprano on "The Very Thought of You," swings up a storm as usual without playing a single dull or frivolous chorus. Kenny Drew and Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen also have their spots but the focus is mostly on the saxophonist. This set holds its own with Zoot Sims' classic studio performances of the era. ~ Scott Yanow
This delightful and solidly swinging club date was first released on this 1995 CD. The great tenor Zoot Sims is assisted by pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Niels Pedersen and drummer Ed Thigpen; the music is as enjoyable as one would expect. Sims, who switches to soprano on "The Very Thought of You," never seems to have played ...
