Giant Bear album
$17.85 Anne Briggs' recording career lasted from 1963 to 1973, after which she largely withdrew from public performance, so the 1990 compilation CLASSIC ANNE BRIGGS came as a revelation to a generation of folk music fans more familiar with successors like Maddy Prior, Sandy Denny and June Tabor. That album gathered together her entire output for the Topic label. The ANNE BRIGGS album of 1971 was combined with her '60s output: two songs she contributed to THE IRON MUSE project, four more from the conceptual BIRD IN THE BUSH album plus her own EP THE HAZARDS OF LOVE.
In the '90s she made a short-lived return to live performance in the company of Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick. Always plagued by stage fright, these appearances were clearly nerve-wracking and the supportive enthusiasm of audiences was not enough to persuade her to revive her singing career. A COLLECTION presents all her Topic material in order of release, but this time adds superb versions of "She Moves Through The Fair" and "Let No Man Steal Your Thyme" first heard on two volumes of THE DECCA EDINBURGH ...
| | Band Of Horses Everything All The Time CD (2006)
Giant Bear CD music
$11.65 EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME is the debut release on Sub Pop from Seattle's Band of Horses. Matt Brooke and Ben Bridwell have abandoned the melancholic slow-core of their previous band Carissa's Weird for a brighter, more straightforward indie rock sound with obvious roots in Neil Young's ragged folk and progressive indie bands like Built to Spill.
EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME benefits from strong songwriting, and the ...
| | Arcade Fire Neon Bible CD (2007)
Giant Bear music CDs
$12.05 Almost three years after the Arcade Fire's 2004 full-length debut, FUNERAL, stunned indie-rock fans with its majestic scope and romantic ferocity, the Montreal-based ensemble returned with NEON BIBLE. Although the album lacks the from-out-of-nowhere punch of the former record, it serves as a fitting successor, with the group's sweeping sound enhanced by even more prominent layers of piano, organ, strings, and percussion.
As on FUNERAL, married multi-instrumentalists Win Butler and Regine Chassagne share vocal duties, and their distinctive singing adds to the emotional weight of each song, from the urgent, bass-heavy "Keep the Car Running" to the brooding, cinematic "Black Waves/Bad Vibrations." And while the Arcade Fire's post-punk influences are still on display, they are more fully integrated into the band's ambitious aesthetic, as best evidenced on the lush, nearly operatic update of "No Cars Go," which originally appeared on its '03 EP. With its cathedral-like grandeur kept in check by the group's restless energy, NEON BIBLE features both slowly revealed charms and immediate thrills, easily making it one of the most impressive albums of early '07.

| | National Boxer CD (2007)
Giant Bear songs
$9.95 On 2007's BOXER, the National's second full-length album for the venerable Beggars Banquet label, the Brooklyn-based indie-rock act follows up the lauded ALLIGATOR with another round of melancholy guitar-driven tunes. Led by deep-voiced vocalist Matt Berninger, who often sounds hung-over yet disarmingly articulate, the band excels at brooding mid-tempo songs, as exemplified by the world-weary "Fake Empire," which combines political and personal themes, and "Mistaken for Strangers," a track that recalls NYC peers Interpol, thanks in part to the punchy approach of shared producer Peter Katis.
And while his presence isn't immediately apparent, indie hero Sufjan Stevens contributes piano to two tracks ("Racing Like a Pro" and "Ada"), adding to the National's increasingly expansive aesthetic, ...
| | Howlin Rain Magnificent Fiend CD (2008)
Giant Bear album
$9.99 The second album from Comets on Fire frontman Ethan Miller's side project Howlin Rain finds the band taking their love of classic rock swagger and cosmic choogle up to a new level. Where the band's debut felt like a one-off genre excursion--albeit a supremely satisfying one--MAGNIFICENT FIEND finds the band comfortable with their identity and fully intent on developing it. For much of the album, wallflower-baiting basslines, stinging guitar ...
| | Arlen Roth Toolin' Around Woodstock: Featuring Levon Helm CD (2008)
Giant Bear CD music
$14.29 Renowned guitarist and session musician Arlen Roth travels up to Woodstock, New York. to record with famed drummer and ex-Band member Levon Helm on TOOLIN' AROUND WOODSTOCK. | | Toby Lightman Little Things CD (2004) Bonus Track; Japan
Giant Bear CD music
$36.99 LITTLE THINGS, the confident debut from Toby Lightman, finds the New Jersey singer heavily under the influence of R&B and pop, and refreshingly devoid of the vocal tics and twirls beloved by some of her contemporaries. With a sound reminiscent of a poppier Norah Jones, Lightman is by turns seductive, innocent, and accusatory, backed by production that's supportive but not overly intrusive. This leaves plenty of room for her vocal talents to shine through on songs such as "Devils and Angels" and "The River."
She toughens up the light R&B of "Leave It Inside," but is sensitive enough to let the simple message of "Running Away" speak for itself without resorting to melodrama. This last track is a particular highlight, with Lightman's vocal framed by acoustic bass and guitar, proving that this talented young singer needn't restrict herself to a purely pop framework to be successful.
Japanese pressing of the singer/songwriter's debut album includes two bonus tracks, 'Real Love' & ...
