How a good-looking Jewish boy from Brooklyn discovered the secret of success in an updated form of mariachi music is perhaps beyond our scope. Then again, it might not be such a mystery after all. Aside from the obvious example of exotica, much easy listening depends upon more than a touch of ethnicity to maintain its musical roots. What Herb Alpert found in Mexican street bands was a previously untapped source of south-of-the-border melody and rhythm. Diana King's sophomore outing Think Like a Girl is a well-crafted, diverse set of soul/pop/reggae that merited much more attention it received. The album contains several ultra catchy songs that have hit written all over them, namely the infectious title track and "Wicked." King is also an extremely earnest and sincere singer, and nowhere is that more evident than on the album's 30-second a cappella interlude "Mi Coffee." On some tunes, such as "Love Yourself" and the single "L-L-Lies," King sings in her trademark, powerful reggae style. On others, such as her sexy and breathy remake of Culture Club's classic "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" and "Find My Way Back," King's performance is more traditional and subdued, yet just as effective. The album did spawn one Top 40 hit with her excellent, driving remake of "I Say a Little Prayer," which also became one of the year's biggest dance hits. Think Like a Girl does tend to wane towards the end, but, overall, this is a surprisingly well-crafted and engaging set, and only hints at what is to come for the talented and extremely photogenic Diana King. ~ Jose F. Greatest Hits bears a striking resemblance to The Essential Jars of Clay, which was released only seven months prior. Jars of Clay left the roster of Essential Recordings in early 2007 and promptly founded their own label, Gray Matters, under whose name they released the holiday-themed Christmas Songs that same year. Essential Recordings continued to reissue the band's existing material, though, offering up the double-disc The Essential Jars of Clay that fall and the (very) similar Greatest Hits in early 2008. Marykate O'Neil is back with her third solo release, mk-ULTRA,and the Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter has lost nothing of the perfect blend of sweetness and cynicism that marked 2006's critically acclaimed 1-800-Bankrupt. Hailed by Filter as a 'rare instance where everything simply clicks\" and Rolling Stone as 'deeply authentic and original,' Bankrupt cemented the standard of songwriting talent O'Neil is known for and delivers again with mk-ULTRA.While studying at Boston University, O'Neil formed the band piewackit, who came to be known around the Northeast for their retro-pop hook-laden confections and O'Neil's angelic vocals. After gigs with acts such as Mary Lou Lord, Juliana Hatfield, and Elliott Smith, piewackit put out sockmonkee in 1997. Marykate went on to release a self-titled solo album in 2002, followed by 2006's 1-800-Bankrupt. Like Marykate O'Neil and 1-800-Bankrupt, mk-ULTRA was produced in a spirit of collaboration. 'Most of the people who played on this record played also on the last two records as well,' says O'Neil.
