Playing and performing on the piano is one of Phil’s greatest passions. Phil started playing at an age when few music teachers would even take him as a student (mostly because he couldn’t even read!) let alone teach him a musical instrument. Eventually he began taking lessons from a private instructor who later pushed him to study at the nationally renowned MacPhail Center for the Arts. While at MacPhail, he accelerated and was named an Honors Composition Student, a rising artist in the Star Tribune and Pioneer Press, and was even appearing on local TV programming - all before the age of 16.In high school, Phil began to play at different dinner shows and competitions and found his flare for live performance. At friends' homes, Phil would entertain for hours playing favorite radio tunes by ear as his audience would sing along. It wasn’t long before Phil was being asked to play for private parties, weddings, and even for a United States Senate Campaign. He soon realized that his dream of becoming a professional musician was taking shape.Today, Phil has found harmony through his music; writing and performing whenever he can to share his flare for relaxing ambient piano in a way no musician ever has. | | Jon Schmidt Walk In The Woods CD (1993)
Opening Act music CDs
$16.39 Walk in the Woods is Jon's follow-up to August End. A stroll through Jon's melodies is filled with emotional and aural keyboard revelations. The cascading arpeggios and rolling chords of "Waterfall," written at seventeen, fairly shout their joy, while "Passages," with its quiet nostalgia, celebrates life transitions, and "Bells of Freedom" captures the hope and freedom felt at the end of a hard, cold winter. The title is a varied mix of lyrical, intimate piano music with light guitar, woodwind and percussion backup. ~ MusD
Jon Schmidt is a rare commodity in today's music world — he is an artist that will simply not play into a single musical genre. Often labeled a "New Age" artist, Jon takes the essence of New Age and turns it on its head. Adding elements of Rock 'n' Roll and Classical music, Jon takes New Age music to a place it has never been before. With seven albums to his credit, Jon takes listeners on an exhilarating yet heart-felt musical journey. Jon's compositions rise above the "paint-by-numbers" songs of today. He has been able rescue the noble parts of New Age from the clutch's of "over extended synthesizers" to bring the listener exceptional, solid music that is fun and still poignant. From the Classical Piano stylings of the wildly popular "Waterfall" (which Jon wrote as a teenager) to the Rock 'n' Roll hybrid "Pachelbel meets U2," Jon has been able to find a pure sound that is distinctly his own without ever succumbing to the trappings of the music genre. With his eclectic blend of sounds, Jon has produced a loyal following that is just as diverse as his musical interests. Jon's music has crossed the great divide finding an audience across the globe. While Jon sees himself as an American artist in the West, his music has touched people the world over, as anyone can see from the response to his music online. As Reuben Evans, a UK fan states, "[Jon is] Awesome! Simply Brilliant, the sort of music that stops you dead and demands that you listen." Jon's music has not simply crossed cultural divides but generations as well. From pre-teens to post Baby Boomer, the diversity of Jon's audience is a unique as the ...

| | Rick Trolsen Sunrise On Bourbon Street CD (2007)
Opening Act music CDs
$16.45 New Orleans trombonist Rick Trolsen, along with fellow musicians Tom Saunders, Steve Pistorius, Herman LeBeaux, and others, gives a phenomenal tribute to traditional jazz classics including “Milenburg Joys” and “The Pearls” from Jelly Roll Morton; “Anything Goes” by Cole Porter; “Puttin’ On The Ritz” by Irving Berlin; and “Ory’s Creole Trombone” by Edward “Kid” Ory. The musical interpretations of Trolsen take the listener back in time, to the days of Bourbon Street when jazz music itself was a risqué and sexy taboo in society. The sound from the ragtime piano, simple back bass beat, and rough brassy sound of Trolsen’s trombone simply screams of what makes New Orleans the unique city it is, and allows the listener to truly experience the essence of NOLA. Trolsen reaches down into the dirty grittiness of his voice to give the listener that memorable hangover feeling on his own “Sunrise On Bourbon Street,” which can simply be described as a colorful musical interpretation of any evening one may have partied too much and drank one too many Pat O’Brien’s Hurricanes. Throughout the entire CD, Trolsen captures the sweetness and purity of his chosen traditional jazz classics, giving a form of NOLA rebirth to another generation. Any lover of traditional jazz music, historian, and collector of New Orleans music in general will easily fall head over heels for this CD, which quenches the thirst for so many classics that could never be forgotten. By Sheri McKee - Where Y'at Magazine - New OrleansRoughly a century after its inception, traditional New Orleans jazz is many things to different people, ranging from a Parnassus of formal majesty to a ponderous street corner cliché. In settings like the Palm Court and Fritzel’s, the canon is delivered like a sacrament by musicians who understand its innate power and received with reverence ...
