Michael Wolff has been heard in a variety of musical settings along the way; on the appropriately titled Jazz, Jazz, Jazz, he leads an acoustic piano trio that keeps things decidedly straight-ahead. Most of the songs on this 2001 session are warhorses that have been recorded countless times over the years; that is true of "Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise" and "Autumn Leaves" as well as Miles Davis' "Solar," Dizzy Gillespie's "Con Alma," and Herbie Hancock's "Dolphin Dance." Wolff even performs "My Funny Valentine," a standard so beaten to death that it inspired the following joke: how many jazz singers does it take to sing "My Funny Valentine"? Answer: all of them (not that jazz singers are any more warhorse-obsessed than instrumentalists). But because of what Wolff does with these warhorses, one is inclined to cut him some slack -- actually, a lot of slack. Yes, most of the songs on Jazz, Jazz, Jazz have been beaten to death, but Wolff's versions are so full of intriguing twists and turns that the 65-minute CD never sounds generic or commonplace. Wolff, who is joined by bassist John B. Williams and drummer Victor Jones, performs these warhorses in a way that is angular, cerebral, impressionistic, and very deconstructionist; like Walter Norris (a highly adventurous pianist), Wolff really turns the songs inside out both melodically and harmonically. The result is an album that, although not quite avant-garde, certainly doesn't go out of its way to be accessible; Jazz, Jazz, Jazz would rather challenge the listener than comfort the listener. Jazz, Jazz, Jazz is the type of disc that must be accepted on its own difficult, unsentimental terms, and those who can do so will find it to be an intellectually stimulating listen despite the warhorse factor. ~ Alex Henderson Michael Wolff Jazz Jazz Jazz Songs | 1. | Autumn Leaves |

| | Herbie Hancock Piano CD (1980) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Jazz Jazz Jazz CD music
$7.59 Previously available only as a limited edition, Japanese import.
Herbie Hancock never really focused on solo piano. However, this 1978 release, which was previously only available in Japan, is a rare gem in the Hancock discography. Thanks to this overdue 2004 reissue, the listener is invited to explore the musical mind of this pianist in an up-close and intimate setting.
All 11 tracks on THE PIANO are quite reflective, with Hancock employing many rich chordal textures and winding melodic gestures throughout. On "My Funny Valentine," Hancock combines the harmonic palette of Bill Evans with his own distinctive phrasing and unexpected modal shifts. His own composition "Blue Otani" is the only bluesy piece on this disc, and here Hancock slyly suggests the stride piano tradition without ever really playing in this style. "Harvest Time" is the most atmospheric piece on the album. As Hancock's fingers glide over the keys, one can almost envision the first blush of daybreak on a farm. For anybody seeking to better understand the conceptual and technical wizardry of Hancock, THE PIANO is a priceless find.
Recorded after the funky fusion of Head Hunters, Thrust, Sextant, and other electric albums, and before the dawn of "Rockit" and more commercially viable and hip-hop-oriented material, Herbie Hancock took time out in 1978 to touch base again with his ...

| | Reba Mcentire Reba CD (1988)
Jazz Jazz Jazz songs
$6.29 In 1984, when she first achieved notable commercial success, Reba McEntire declared herself part of the new traditionalist movement in country music, claiming that the pop-oriented recordings she had made in the '70s and early '80s did not reflect her real taste and that, as an album title put it, My Kind of Country was the sound of steel guitars and fiddles. In 1988, however, McEntire and her longtime co-producer Jimmy Bowen demonstrated that she was more interested in hits, in whatever style, than in country music orthodoxy. Reba, her 13th regular studio album, featured no steel guitars or fiddles; the most prominent instruments were the keyboards -- piano and a DX-7 synthesizer -- played by John Jarvis. Rock drummer Russ Kunkel, known for his association with James Taylor, pounded out the crisp beats, and Wayne Nelson popped his bass strings as if he were doing a funk session on the leadoff track, "So, So, So Long," which could have fit in snugly on adult contemporary radio, but certainly didn't sound very country. It was followed by McEntire's cover of the '40s song "Sunday Kind of Love," the album's first single, done in a lazy jazz style. Bowen and McEntire had not forgotten the singer's core audience of women wanting to hear heartbreaking ballads about regret and love gone wrong, and after "Sunday Kind of Love" peaked at a disappointing number five, the more characteristic "New Fool at an Old Game" and "I Know How He Feels" extended McEntire's string of number-one hits. But the song that really set Nashville back on its heels was a cover of Otis Redding's "Respect" in an arrangement very similar to Aretha Franklin's. The makeover worked commercially; Reba spent eight weeks at number one on the country charts, more than any previous McEntire album. But the country singer of a few years back, decked ...

Jazz Jazz Jazz music CDs
$12.55 In the last three years alone he’s driven 80,000 miles to play in more than 50 cities in 20 states. When you figure in the airplanes and rental cars, it adds up to a lot of scenery and a lot of songs. For Craig Carothers, the journey, and the songs, began in the Pacific Northwest. Craig’s parents were both music teachers. Around the house, sounds ranged from Brubeck to Mancini; Victor Borgé to Jonathan Winters. Later influences included Motown, Joni Mitchell, Tom Lehrer, and The Beatles.Venues were plentiful around his home in Portland, Oregon, and Craig spent more than 20 years playing almost every night of the week inside a forty-block radius.During that time, he toured with or opened for a wide variety of acts: Mose Allison, Karla Bonnoff, Jonatha Brooke, Rosanne Cash, Bruce Cockburn, Paula Cole, Robert Cray, Catie Curtis, Crash Test Dummies, Donovan, Peter Himmelman, John Hiatt, Leo Kottke, Patty Larkin, Michael McDonald, Dennis Miller, Anne Murray, Danny O'Keefe, Leroy Parnell, Paula Poundstone, Boz Skaggs, Toad The Wet Sprocket, Richard Thompson, Jethro Tull, Romeo Void, Loudon Wainwright III, Tim Weisberg, David Wilcox, Warren Zevon, and many others.Things ...
