Soon after opening an international office in Israel, Putumayo put together a compilation of contemporary cool from around the country. The sounds are relaxed, the mood is strong, and the message made by the liner notes is clear: this is the music of a new generation, with a mingling of religions and viewpoints favoring music and peace. The album opens up with a bit of lounge music courtesy of Etti Ankri, followed immediately by some transplanted Brazilian bossa nova performed excellently by Itay Pearl. Hadas Dagul, like the duo of Rona Kenan and Gidi Gov following her, sounds as though she's coming straight from the French café scene. Reggae makes its first appearance with Mosh Ben Ari (his band, Sheva, performs another number later). An excellent bit of jam band music comes from the kibbutz-based Moshav Band as well as Zafa (though with a more Yemenite bent). A nice bit of singer/songwriter aesthetic comes courtesy of David Broza, the Eurovision-notorious Teapacks present a song, Amal Murkus adds a Palestinian voice to the proceedings, and the album ends with the particularly multi-cultural Idan Raichel Project and an Ethiopian folk song. The style throughout is cool, lounge-like, expressive while somewhat guarded. The only thing holding this multitude of styles together is the connection to the same homeland and exposure to a creativity promoting culture. The music is solid, and this is a fine first stepping stone for further explorations into contemporary Israeli music. ~ Adam Greenberg Putumayo Presents Israel Music Putumayo Presents Israel Songs | 1. | Nilkach Meemeni Sod - (with Etti Ankri) |

Putumayo Presents Israel
$11.65 For the martyrs of the dagger of submission, the Unseen brings a new life every morning. On this recording, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan blends traditional sarangi accompaniment with innovative electric voices.
Personnel: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (vocals). "For the martyrs of the dagger of submission, the Unseen brings a new life every morning," reads the legend on the back of this album, and the chief martyr would seem to be qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who certainly sounds joyous. "On this recording Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan blends traditional sarangi accompaniment with innovative electric ...
| | Everly Brothers Sing CD (1967)
Putumayo Presents Israel
$10.45 The Everly Brothers: Don Everly, Phil Everly (vocals); Al Capps (guitar); Terry Slater (bass guitar). Arrangers: Gene Page; Billy Strange. Coming at what seemed like the low ebb of their commercial fortunes, The Everly Brothers Sing was neglected even by many fans at the time, and was overlooked for the next 38 years, until its reissue by Collectors' Choice Music in 2005. Actually, it represented some of the duo's most ambitious music of the late '60s, if not their most successful, and was as forward-looking musically as its immediate predecessor, The Hit Sound of the Everly Brothers -- released in February of 1967 and heavily laden with covers of '50s rock/R&B standards and '60s songs that were already identified as "oldies" -- was retro; the most interesting and challenging song from that record's sessions, "Even If I Hold It in My Hand (Hard Luck Story)," was left in the can, but not so ...
