On album number nine, Snoop branches out a bit, assuming executive producer credits and working as one-third of the production team QDT (along with Teddy Riley and DJ Quik). While the production hovers around 1970s R&B, soul, and smoothed-out funk (with conspicuous samples from Marvin Gaye, the Isleys, Brooklyn Dreams, and Prince Phillip Mitchell), there are also a few curious excursions into '80s synth-pop ("Cool") and even country music ("My Medicine"). At the same time, Snoop's lyrics are all over the place. Over the course of the album's 21 tracks, he goes from mega-boasting on his fame and wealth ("Gangsta Like Me," "Staxx in my Jeans") to celebrity name-dropping ("Deez Hollywood Nights") to seductive talk-box crooning ("Sexual Eruption") and groupie-love anthems ("Life of da Party," "Those Gurlz") to bittersweet reminiscing on his rise from the hood ("Can't Say Goodbye") and dedications to his wife and kids ("Been Around tha World"). As the title suggests, EGO TRIPPIN' is all about Mr. Calvin Broadus, and therefore the outing contains just a handful of guest spots from Too Short, Raphael Saadiq, Mistah F.A.B., and Charlie Wilson.

A-ha's sixth studio CD (seventh if their greatest-hits collection is included) came seven years after their previous album, Memorial Beach, and in that time it seems that a-ha mellowed out. They do not seem to have concern about attracting the youth/dance market, but instead seem to be focusing in on how to make perfect middle-of-the-road pop songs with '90s technology. This is not a criticism, as it produces several fantastic songs, such as "Little Black Heart" and the wonderful "I Wish That I Cared." These, and many others, are full of catchy, beautiful melodies and Morten Harket's vocals are near perfect as usual -- his voice has not lowered one octave since their debut. The follow-up to the Perishers' well-received LET THERE BE MORNING, 2007's VICTORIOUS expands on the Swedish alt-rock band's wistful chamber-pop tendencies. From the spare opener, "Midnight Skies," to the somber, piano-led closer, "Get Well," the group mines the same sensitive vein as Keane and Aqualung, while making time for the occasional ray of sunshine, most notably on the uncharacteristically breezy "Carefree."
With their third album, Victorious, the Perishers should finally put an end to the hackneyed references to their Swedish homeland and the clichéd use of such modifiers as "icy," "glacial," and "glassy" -- for this set is imbued with such warmth, its sound so glowing, that there is no choice but to look elsewhere for adjectives. The Perishers can thank Per Sunding for that, his production bathing their music in luminescence, highlighting their fragile, exquisite atmospheres, and throwing into relief their sublime instrumental interplay.
