On their first album, 1987's Product of Imagination, Germany's Paradox came across as a quite competent but inconsistent speed metal band; but on their second, 1989's Heresy, they emerged as world-beating thrashers! In fact, Heresy's only discernible weakness may be its rather obvious inspirational debt to Anthrax's all-time classic Among the Living (in particular on "Search for Perfection" and "Killtime"), but then, New York's finest would probably have killed to follow up their greatest LP with something this good, instead of State of Euphoria. Anyway, Heresy was a full-fledged concept album, to boot, delving into the Albigensian Crusade of the 13th century, which annihilated the followers of an illuminated sect called Catharism in excruciating detail (also memorialized in Iron Maiden's "Montsegur") -- hence such titles as "Crusaders' Revenge" and the Testament-esque "Massacre of the Cathars." Yet none of these tracks sacrifice an ounce of their moshing intensity for the benefit of free history lessons, and for all of the understandable sonic comparisons to Anthrax, Paradox possessed the added advantage of two capable lead guitarists delivering mind-boggling solos, soaring twin harmonies, and Exodus-like rhythmic precision. The very impressive results can be heard on the heroic title cut and pulverizing thrashers like the "The Burning," "Serenity," and "700 Years On" -- all of which help make Heresy one of the underrated gems from the original thrash metal era. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
Paradox - German Power/Thrash/Speed Metal founded in 1986. Their second album, 'Heresy' was released in November 1989 and was a great success, especially in Japan. In Germany, as well as all over Europe (especially Greece and Italy), the press was full of praise for the album. This reissue is completely remastered and contains 3 bonus tracks (2 audio, 1 video). The return of original vocalist Peter Dolving before the Haunted's fourth album, rEVOLVEr, coincided with the respected Swedish metal band's first deliberate effort to break out of their heretofore self-imposed neo-thrash metal boundaries. But for those unadventurous fans who already bristled at that album's tentative forays "out of the box," their 2006 follow-up, The Dead Eye, may sound tantamount to stylistic treason. Here, token samples of the group's once dominant brisk thrashers (instantly recognizable thanks to their fast-picked notes, originating with Anders and Jonas Bjorler's legendary prequel band, At the Gates) like "The Medication," "The Shifter" and "The Stain" are exceptions, not the rule -- mere olive branches extended out of pity to those obstinate fans. The remainder of The Dead Eye (whose every track title stars with a "the" for some reason) finds the band trafficking in a variety of slower tempos (both "The Drowning" and "The Guilt Trip" get seriously doomy), experimenting with novel guitar textures (hear notions of Meshuggah, the Deftones and Isis in "The Cynic" and "The Failure"), and cutting Dolving loose to try all manner of singing approaches. Therefore, as well as his still-prevalent hardcore bark and ragged screams, you'll hear him actually sing over exceptionally memorable, big chorus numbers like "The Reflection" and "The Medusa," testing an uneasy baritone over portions of "The Flood," and delicately lending subdued melodies to "The Fallout," which is only less shocking than the song's accompanying piano and techno-industrial knick-knacks. Paradox staked their claim as one of Germany's most accomplished, melodic speed metal bands with this 1987 debut, which branded them first and foremost a guitar band. This may sound rather obvious when discussing a heavy metal band, but really does merit special mention given the jaw-dropping technique displayed by the six-string tandem of Charly Steinhauer and Markus Spyth -- both on the lead and rhythm fronts. Not that bassist Roland Stahl and drummer Axel Blaha had any trouble keeping up, mind you, and it's truly an incredibly cohesive and taut unit that rips through Testament-type mega-thrashers such as "Paradox," the amusingly named "Death, Screaming and Pain," and the especially frenzied compilation track that earned them their deal with Roadrunner in the first place, "Pray to the Godz of Wrath." Also worth mentioning is the extended, seven-minute title track, which builds gradually from a relatively generic acoustic intro towards climatic and anthemic dual harmonies before unleashing its central thrashing section; but like many other songs here (e.g. "Mystery," "Kill That Beast," "Beyond Space," with its clumsy gang choruses), it suffers from wild inconsistencies of tone, dynamics, and quality. Along with a set of song intros, outros and stand-alone guitar solos (see "Continuation of Invasion"), these compositional issues suggested that maybe Paradox weren't quite ready to record, but rather were hurriedly cobbling songs together throughout the album's sessions. Biograph has come out with many releases of piano rolls through the years. This CD has some by Cow Cow Davenport, James P. Johnson, Clarence Williams, Jimmy Blythe, Hersal Thomas, Lemuel Fowler and two totally forgotten names: Everett Robbins and Clarence Johnson. As is usual with piano rolls, the rhythms are inflexible and the touch a bit unnatural so it may take listeners a while to get used to these performances. The emphasis is more on blues than on boogie-woogie but in general the music is fine for this idiom although not as lively as real piano solos. ~ Scott Yanow
