There are few soneros out there who can claim the same level of pedigree that produced Yumuri. Born Moisés Valle, alongside brothers Orlando (Maraca) and Luis, one can only imagine how musical that house must have been. He met the salsa world head on in 1984 when he joined the very popular Elio Revé Orquesta (which, incidentally, gave him the name Yumuri), affording him the opportunity to share the stage with such vocal greats as Cheo Feliciano, Rubén Blades, Ismael Miranda, and Tito Nieves. Known especially for his amazing range, comfort in the upper registers, and improvisational ability, it was not long before Yumuri split from Revé to pursue a solo career, backed by his famous brothers. Though his 2002 release Tiene Bilongo does not feature both of the other fabulous Valles (Maraca does appear on the record), there's plenty of talent to go around. Doug Stone scored 18 Top 20 country hits in the 1990s before he committed the unpardonable sin of aging into his mid-forties and being unceremoniously dumped off the rosters of the major labels. To his credit, he has not only continued touring, he has also continued to record. My Turn finds him producing himself for the first time, and the result is an album that contains several more potential country hits, or would if it had the promotional muscle it takes to score hits. "We're All About That" and "That's How We Roll," both written by the team of Rusty VanSickle, Terry Clayton, and Jeff Jones, are up-tempo stompers full of redneck pride. VanSickle, Clayton, and Jones also reflect on a man's tendency to learn his lessons "The Hardway," but they turn all sensitive and romantic on the ballads "Ain't That Just Like a Woman" and "She Always Gets What She Wants." "Don't Tell Mama," by Kim Williams, William Brock, and Jerry Laseter, is a cautionary tale about drinking, driving, and dying, while Williams and Tim Johnson's "Nice Problem" is one of those philosophical "stop and smell the roses" messages in which it takes a man's encounter with a beggar to make him appreciate his family, his mortgage, and his broken washer. Although it was released two years after Sly & Robbie celebrated their Taxi label's 25th anniversary with a worldwide tour, the 2007 release Anniversary must have originally been planned to cash in on the festivities, since it's hard to find another reason for this baffling collection. First of all, tracks come from the late '80s and onward, but there are no dates or sources given in the liner notes, something that would have been helpful seeing how some of these cuts come from the fringe of Sly & Robbie's discography. Second, there are some misleading titles and a couple of doubtful credits. For instance, "Bread Man Shuffle" is better known as "Live It Up," and usually comes with the aka "Beardman Shuffle" (see 1997's Mambo Taxi album). Even stranger is that "Viva Tirado" is credited to its composer, jazz legend Gerald Wilson, when it was originally credited to the Taxi Gang, and Wilson sure doesn't seem to be playing on the cut. As far as the music itself, there's the classic instrumental "Unmetered Taxi," which provided the riddim for Buju Banton's massive hit "Driver A." Then there's the seductive "Good Love" from sweet siren and sometimes actress Cherine Anderson. Both "Fire in the Oven" and "Ticket to Ride" with post-disco diva Gwen Guthrie do a good job of representing Sly & Robbie's love of crossover dancefloor material. ...
