Jackson County Line album
$11.35 NIGHT CASTLE appears just in time for the big 2009 holiday season but don't be fooled: this isn't a Christmas album, even if it's sonically indistinguishable from Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other seasonal releases, and the fact that it's been dubbed "Capra-esque" certainly brings it within the realm of the season. NIGHT CASTLE brims with all the drama, pomp, and circumstance of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other records but channeling these traits through a newly created narrative does have the effect of hearing it in a somewhat new light, shifting the focus entirely to the band's attack, not melody. Still, there's not that much new here -- and the coda of seasonal covers, including the first sober version of "Nutrocker" ever cut, doesn't do much to break that spell. But for those already enchanted by the Orchestra, this will continue ...

| | Pink Martini Splendor In The Grass CD (2009) Digipak
Jackson County Line CD music
$13.39 Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on the more straightforward lounge-pop of their debut, SYMPATHIQUE, and the mellowness of '60s and '70s pop. SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS' first half is especially smooth, opening with the beautifully soft Neapolitan ballad "Ninna Nanna" and the title track, on which Forbes sings "I ...

| | Agents Of Karma CD (2007)
Jackson County Line album
$11.49 What's Karma got to do with it? Good question, I suppose if you're a believer in such things, Karma has everything to do with it. The Urban Dictionary defines an Agent of Karma as; {Someone who is sick of waiting for others to get what is coming to them, and by becoming an "Agent of Karma", they then bring the consequences upon the other person themselves. Classification as the "Agent of Karma" makes it so that you are then not eligible for any bad karma to then be returned onto you.} I guess you can say that this band has decided not to wait for others to create the kind of Rock they want to hear! The band name Agents of Karma has a life of it's own, and the fortuitous acronym A.O.K. was a happy accident. Agents of Karma rose from the ashes of Jay Cavanaugh and Conrad Sparnroft's former association as members of the alternative band Gray Zone. After years apart, Conrad exploring other bands and Jay exploring stage and film acting, they embarked on a new project. And like rebellion fomenting in the belly, the ferocity of their new sound could not be contained. So AOK stormed the Bastille and released the music to the people. Along with the Rock solid drumming, percussion, vocals and sampling of Patrick Conlon the man for all seasons, AOK is a force of nature. Three refugee's from the pigeon hole prison where sounding like everyone else is the norm. A squad of escape artists from the confines of Tribute band hell, manipulating the straight jacket of conformity while dunked in the water's of mediocrity. Man, it ain't easy being Houdini, Nikola Tesla + Buckminster Fuller all rolled into one ball of high energy plasma, but it sure is fun. Agents of Karma is hard edged, but inquisitive and politically aware at the same time. It's music ebbs n flows like morning and evening tides. The Yin ...
| | Herbie Hancock Sextant CD (1973)
Jackson County Line CD music
$6.09 Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Tom Ruff (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
SEXTANT is a perfect example of how CD reissues of long out of print records can gain more respect when brought to the broader, modern context. The first recording Hancock made for Columbia and the last one done with his Mwandishi octet, a group deeply under the influence of Miles Davis' experimentation with electronics and global polyrhythms, SEXTANT was dismissed upon its release as a fusion-absorbed bastardization of jazz forms and melody-free dead ends. But heard through modern ears seduced by Miles' global funk and Brian Eno's soundscapes, it's a revelation, forecasting a future that may or may not have anything to do with Jazz.
It starts with a flurry of ...
