Paint It Black
$14.09 Audio Mixer: Randy Staub . When Layne Staley died from a drug overdose in 2002, it had already been several years since most Alice in Chains fans stopped hoping for a new album. The singer had become a recluse since the late-`90s, and there was little indication that AIC would ever again produce much in the way of new music. As a result, when the remaining members reunited to release BLACK GIVES WAY TO BLUE in 2009, expectations were low. To the delight of all however, the album proved to be perhaps the Seattle combo's most energetic and consistent effort since its masterpiece DIRT. Perhaps the most surprising element of the new record was how much it sounded exactly like Alice in Chains. While new singer William DuVall was not an exact Staley soundalike, he managed to evoke both the unique timbre and sense of deep angst that were the late vocalist's trademarks. Throughout, the sound is heavier and sturdier than ever before, with songs like the first single "A Looking In View" and "Check My Brain" borrowing a bit from the nu-metal bands Alice in Chains inspired, and beating the upstarts at their own game. It's hard not to feel for Alice in Chains -- all the guys in the band were lifers, all except lead singer Layne Staley, who never managed to exorcise his demons, succumbing to drug addiction in 2002. Alice in Chains stopped being a going concern long before that, all due to Staley's addictions, and it took guitarist Jerry Cantrell, bassist Mike Inez, and drummer Sean ...

Paint It Black
$11.99 Adapters: John Leventhal; Rosanne Cash. Personnel: Jeff Tweedy, Rufus Wainwright, Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen (vocals); John Leventhal (guitar, dobro, mandolin, harmonica, harmonium, organ, Wurlitzer organ, drums, percussion); RIck DePofi (bass clarinet, horns, piano); Zev Katz, Tim Luntzel (upright bass); Joe Bonadio, Shawn Pelton (drums); Curtis King (background vocals). Audio Mixers: John Leventhal; RIck DePofi. Photographer: Deborah Feingold. Arrangers: John Leventhal; Rosanne Cash. After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American ...

| | Ray LaMontagne Trouble CD (2004)
Paint It Black
$9.69 Personnel: Ray LaMontagne (vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica); Ray LaMontagne; Roger Wilke, Roger Wilkie (violin); Ethan Johns (guitar, piano, harmonium, bass guitar, drums, percussion); Mark Robertson , Julie Gigante, Phillipe Levy (violin); David Low (cello). Audio Mixer: Ethan Johns. Recording information: Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA. Illustrator: Jason Holley. The best songs on Trouble, the debut release from songwriter Ray LaMontagne, draw on deep wells of emotion, and with LaMontagne's sandpapery voice, which recalls a gruffer, more sedate version of Tim Buckley or an American version of Van Morrison, they seem to belie his years. The title tune, "Trouble," is an instant classic, sparse and maudlin (in the best sense), and songs like "Narrow Escape," a ragged, episodic waltz, are equally impressive, with careful, cinematic lyrics that tell believable stories of wounded-hearted refugees on the hard road of life and love. Most of the tracks fall into a midtempo shuffle rhythm, so the words have to carry a lot in order ...

$9.85 EMC toured in the early 90's with some of the true pioneers of Christian rap, such greats as D-boy, D.O.C. and MC Gee Ge. Djing for them on tour he would often times open up for them as well. Releasing his single "Rock solid" D-boy took notice of his production skills and djing ability and offered him the position of djing for D-boy on the road. After the death of D-boy from a fatal gun shot wound, EMC was hired by Tim Miner ( D-boy's producer) to help complete D-boy's sisters album. MC Gee Ge's "Soul sista" in which EMC wrote and produced the title track. "Soul sista". He released his solo project Sin Assasinator that same year, he was offered a production deal from Tim Miner, but turned it down because of creative differences. Quickly becoming in demand for his production ability he was offered by Alton Hood (lead rapper of D.O.C.) other gigs as a dj for D.O.C. and the opening act. After 1 1/2 of touring with D.O.C. EMC decided to go back home to Detroit, Mi. and attend Bible College. 2 years later he released "Black Plague" single on Grape Tree records and "Urban Science" on C-boy Productions, Publishing.
