How a good-looking Jewish boy from Brooklyn discovered the secret of success in an updated form of mariachi music is perhaps beyond our scope. Then again, it might not be such a mystery after all. Aside from the obvious example of exotica, much easy listening depends upon more than a touch of ethnicity to maintain its musical roots. What Herb Alpert found in Mexican street bands was a previously untapped source of south-of-the-border melody and rhythm. In 2001, Karmacoda showed a fair amount of promise on their debut album, Reco Mended. This 49-minute CD was recorded at a time when Karmacoda was primarily a studio project, not a group that performed live shows on a regular basis. But when Reco Mended received a favorable response in Bay Area electronica circles, Karmacoda started to make live performances a high priority -- and it isn't hard to understand why those Northern California listeners appreciated Reco Mended as much as they did. The material is generally appealing -- material that makes it clear how trip-hop got its name. Intriguing tracks such as "Disrespect," "Amsterdam Room," "Merciless," and "A Desolate Heat" are indeed trippy; the whole album favors a trippy, spacy ambience, and trippiness prevails whether the lead vocals are male vocals or whether they are being provided by female singer Heather Pierce. It should be noted that after 2001, Pierce eventually went on to become Karmacoda's primary lead singer; vocally, Pierce is dominant on 2007's Illuminate, whereas on Reco Mended, she plays a prominent role as a lead singer but without being dominant and without surpassing the male vocals in prominence. Reco Mended is not Karmacoda's most essential album -- in 2001, Karmacoda were still finding their way creatively, and their best work was yet to come -- but it's a generally respectable, if imperfect, debut that got the ball rolling ...

From a Mustard SeedThe seeds of this CD were first sown one summer over a decade ago when a friend, who was producing weekly presentations of Bible stories for our church's youth outreach program, enlisted me to compose and perform a few songs based on the Joseph story. The songs were well received by the large group of children from a local day camp who attended that week's performance.These songs then lay fallow until the late nineties when I included "Coat of Many Colors" on a CD of my own music made for family and friends. When several parents and children asked me for more Bible songs, I looked again at the other Joseph tunes I'd written and realized that they would stand well together in a collection of song cycles based on different Bible stories. Bassist Anton Hatwich provides a stable fulcrum with his thrumming, insistent vamps, around which drummers Frank Rosaly and Tim Daisy, both on trap sets, play a dynamic array of swinging beats, interlocking Latin motifs, martial cadences, and nuanced, meterless textures.
