Bass On Top songs
$9.59 How a good-looking Jewish boy from Brooklyn discovered the secret of success in an updated form of mariachi music is perhaps beyond our scope. Then again, it might not be such a mystery after all. Aside from the obvious example of exotica, much easy listening depends upon more than a touch of ethnicity to maintain its musical roots. What Herb Alpert found in Mexican street bands was a previously untapped source of south-of-the-border melody and rhythm. With its unlikely combination of Alpert's cool Chet Baker-like trumpet and the blocky cadences of a marching band, the Tijuana Brass produced a lively, colorful mix that managed to appeal to hips and squares alike.
WHIPPED CREAM & OTHER DELIGHTS was Herb Albert's most ...

Bass On Top CD music
$9.39 When bandleader Stan Kenton was approached to record an album of holiday music in 1961 he agreed, on one condition -- no songs about singing snowmen or flying reindeer. The resulting album, A Merry Christmas, is a polyphonic masterpiece that is at once progressive and traditional. Included are such well-known classics as "O Tannenbaum" and "The Twelve Days of Christmas" as well as lesser known gems like "The Holly and the Ivy" and "Once in Royal David's City." Featuring ...

| | Karmacoda Reco Mended CD (2001)
Bass On Top album
$10.15 In 2001, Karmacoda showed a fair amount of promise on their debut album, Reco Mended. This 49-minute CD was recorded at a time when Karmacoda was primarily a studio project, not a group that performed live shows on a regular basis. But when Reco Mended received a favorable response in Bay Area electronica circles, Karmacoda started to make live performances a high priority -- and it isn't hard to understand why those Northern California listeners appreciated Reco Mended as much as they did. The material is generally appealing -- material that makes it clear how trip-hop got its name. Intriguing tracks such as "Disrespect," "Amsterdam Room," "Merciless," and "A Desolate Heat" are indeed trippy; the whole album favors a trippy, spacy ambience, and trippiness prevails whether the lead vocals are male vocals or whether they are being provided by female singer Heather Pierce. It should be noted that after 2001, Pierce eventually went on to become Karmacoda's primary lead singer; vocally, Pierce is dominant on 2007's Illuminate, whereas on Reco Mended, she plays a prominent role as a lead singer but without being dominant and without surpassing the male vocals in prominence. Reco Mended is not Karmacoda's most essential album -- in 2001, Karmacoda were still finding their way creatively, and their best work was yet to come -- but it's a generally respectable, if imperfect, debut that got the ball rolling ...

| | David Sand Coat Of Many Colors CD (2005)
Bass On Top music CDs
$18.99 From a Mustard SeedThe seeds of this CD were first sown one summer over a decade ago when a friend, who was producing weekly presentations of Bible stories for our church's youth outreach program, enlisted me to compose and perform a few songs based on the Joseph story. The songs were well received by the large group of children from a local day camp who attended that week's performance. These songs then lay fallow until the late nineties when I included "Coat of Many Colors" on a CD of my own music made for family and friends. When several parents and children asked me for more Bible songs, I looked again at the other Joseph tunes I'd written and realized that they would stand well together in a collection of song cycles based on different Bible stories. And so began the work that brought this series of songs into existence. There was no conscious design on my part in choosing these particular stories. As I considered what material ...
| | Rempis Percusssion Quartet Rip Tear Crunch CD (2006)
Bass On Top songs
$16.45 "The name of Dave Rempis's latest group is fair warning: never before has the local saxophonist led a band that hit this hard. Bassist Anton Hatwich provides a stable fulcrum with his thrumming, insistent vamps, around which drummers Frank Rosaly and Tim Daisy, both on trap sets, play a dynamic array of swinging beats, interlocking Latin motifs, martial cadences, and nuanced, meterless textures. Even at full throttle the two drummers mesh precisely, despite their divergent styles: Rosaly's is fluid and sinuous, busy with double- kick flutters, while Daisy's is more spiky and agitated. Rempis sketches keening alto and tenor lines across the surface, taking a more overtly melodic tack than he does in Triage or his free-improv quartet with Jim Baker. At other times he switches to baritone and plunges down into the ensemble's dense and surging rhythms, using his horn like yet another percussion instrument--and it's then I start thinking this might be the best new jazz band in town. The set I caught a couple weeks ago at Hotti Biscotti created an unstoppable momentum with its seamless transitions, opening with a polyrhythmic whirlwind worthy of late- 60s Pharoah Sanders and building from there." - Bill Meyer, Chicago Reader-Rip Tear Crunch is the 11th entry in the 482 Music ongoing Document Chicago series. Led by saxophonist Dave Rempis, a member of prominent Chicago-based groups such as Triage and the Vandermark 5, The Rempis Percussion Quartet features fellow Chicago scene veterans Anton Hatwich (Indoor/Outdoor, Festival Quartet), Tim Daisy (Triage, Kyle Bruckman's Wrack) and Frank Rosaly (Fred Lonberg-Holm Trio, Ken Vandermark's Crisis Ensemble). Critics have called Dave Rempis "one of the busiest and most versatile jazz musicians in Chicago" (Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader), "a ferocious virtuoso improviser" (Marc Meyers, AllAboutJazz.com) and "a young veteran of Chicago's experimental music scene who has been establishing a vividly recognizable voice of his own" (Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune). In addition to his well documented sideman work, he leads/co-leads groups such as Triage, The Engines, The Rempis/Daisy Duo, and The Dave Rempis Quartet, which recorded the fifth Document Chicago series entry, 2004's Out of ...
