| | Masada Quintet Stolas: Book Of Angels Volume 12 CD (2009)
Best Of Memories CD music
$12.99 STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish folk music, bossa nova, and other Latin jazz all come together in a seamless meld of tunes that accent the symmetry of ensemble play as much as they do an extremely advanced sense of ensemble harmonics, rhythmic invention, and, of course, tautly arranged spaces for individual improvisation--check out the album's longest cut, "Tagriel," for evidence as Zorn's composition ...

| | Bob Marley Confrontation CD (1983) Bonus Track; Remastered
Best Of Memories CD music
$10.75 Additional personnel includes: Glen DaCosta (tenor saxophone); David Madden (trumpet); Nambo (trombone); Devon Evans (percussion).
Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (2001, Sterling Sound, New York, New York)
An interesting collection of singles and posthumously archived material created in the same way as Hendrix's CRASH LANDING and The Beatles "Free as a Bird," (albeit with most of the original musicians), CONFRONTATION is more consistent than one would expect and includes at least one certified classic in "Buffalo Soldier." The record features some very tasty guitar, good vocal performances and the always rock-steady rhythm section of the Barrett brothers. While not absolutely essential, it should certainly be the next purchase for anyone who already owns all of the official Marley albums. While the disc is perhaps a little light on variety, it's still a Bob Marley album and thus as good as the best work of many other artists. Overall, CONFRONTATION is great mellow summertime listening and a worthy addition to any reggae collection.
A posthumous collection produced by Rita ...
| | Edison Diamond Disc Fox Trots CD (2000)
Best Of Memories music CDs
$15.75 Old man Edison didn't care much for hot dance music, and it was with solemn resignation that he allowed it to be recorded by his company starting in 1920. This collection is limited to the early end of that spectrum chronologically, and covers many of the hits that were standards in the early '20s that were likewise recorded by Victor, Columbia, Gennett, and other early record companies. The advantage to this package is the improved sound of the Edison Diamond Disc over the others; although weak in the bass, the records were loud and clear in the midrange and treble. The bands here range from the charming trio of Ernest Stevens (saxophone, banjo, and piano) to the California Ramblers hiding under the Edison nom de disque of the Broadway Dance Orchestra. There are a few hot solos here and there, but mostly these records were meant for dancing and were not intended as jazz. Tempos are friendly to dancers, and for that reason this would be an ...

| | Peter Hammill Singularity CD (2006)
Best Of Memories music CDs
$13.75 Peter Hammill has been at it for almost 40 years now, and yet, since the early 2000s, he has been on a new way up, creatively speaking. Clutch (2002) and Incoherence (2004), his previous two studio albums, had both hit high artistic marks, but that is only one of the main reasons why Singularity was so highly anticipated by the fans. It was also the Thin Man's first studio album since remastering his '70s LPs for EMI, his first since the re-formation of his old group, Van der Graaf Generator. Yet, most importantly, especially for a man of words like he is, it was his first studio release since his heart attack two years earlier. Were all the expectations generated by these "firsts" met? Surprisingly, yes. Singularity stands among Hammill's best albums of the past 25 years. He recorded it entirely on his own, playing everything, including drums, something he had not done since 1980's A Black Box. The songs are also significantly darker than on previous albums and integrate more experimental elements, two factors bestowing a certain reminiscence of his late-'70s oeuvre again. Singularity is full of backward textures, abstract sound paintings, and massed choruses that go resolutely beyond the way Hammill was overdubbing his vocals in the past decade. The "weirdness" factor culminates in the closing "White Dot," by far the man's most stunning aural concoction of late. Before reaching that apocalyptic finale, the listener is treated to a number of excellent, ...
