| | Carla Thomas Live At The Bohemian Caverns CD Carla Thomas Discography of CDs
Unreleased until 40 years after it was recorded at the prestigious Washington D.C. nightspot the Bohemian Caverns, this intriguing live 1967 concert was to have signified soul singer Carla Thomas's blossoming into an all-round entertainer. It features a set list containing both her then-smash hit "B-A-B-Y" and sophisticated jazz and American Songbook standards, such as Irving Berlin's "It's a Lovely Day Today," as well as an all-star band led by a young Donny Hathaway, plus the additional bonus of three songs performed with Thomas's father, the veteran R&B performer Rufus Thomas.
Personnel: Rufus Thomas.
Dirty Linen (p.88) - "Thomas re-invents herself as a velvety-voice diva....She comes up with extremely soulful re-workings of tunes popularized by Doris Day, Johnny Mathis, and Frank Sinatra." $22.25 Former rock critic Chrissie Hynde launched the Pretenders with an engaging, yet passive, version of the Kinks' "Stop Your Sobbing." She unveiled her own persona fully on The Pretenders, which contains a series of excellent compositions marked by her sensual vocals and brilliant sense of dynamics. An understanding of pop's structures allowed Hynde to exploit them to her own ends while sympathetic support, particularly that of guitarist James Honeyman-Scott, used the excitement of rock without reference to its cliches. Tough and opinionated, Chrissie Hynde's first declaration of independence established the formula she proceeded to follow.
The Pretenders' debut album received a much-deserved upgrade in the fall of 2006, as Rhino reissued it as a double-disc set containing a remastered version of the original album on the first disc and a wealth of ...

$17.75 The band look magnificent on the cover as they pose with make-up or heavily retouched faces. They look confident, knowing that their follow-up is almost as good as the debut. Chrissie and Ray Davies were stepping out at this time, hence the opening track, "The Adultress," as Hynde whispers her confession over a furious wall of sound, to be immediately followed by her reminder that "Bad Boys Get Spanked." If only Chrissie, if only. The album drives and dives, pausing for "I Go To Sleep," another old Ray Davies song. There is not a bad track in sight.
The Pretenders' second album received a much-deserved upgrade in the fall of 2006, as Rhino ...

Live At The Bohemian Caverns CD music
$9.85 It seems that we've come to a point in the development of pop music when the word "jazz" (in the context of dance music, anyway) no longer means swing, or improvisation, or sophisticated chord progressions. What it now means is lounge, and what lounge means, all too often, is easy listening for people who fancy themselves too sophisticated for easy listening. Take some cookie-cutter downtempo electronic music, throw in a muted trumpet and maybe a string bass sample, and presto: you've got something you can call "jazz." Throw in a laid-back singer with poetic pretensions, and you've hit hipster gold, even if the lyrics he delivers are a mush of half-baked loverman clichés and simplistic references to themes of spiritual and/or social uplift. Unfortunately, this seems to be Jazzhole's territory. Every track on Poet's Walk is pleasant and listenable, but not a single one contains enough musical or lyrical substance to provoke a second listen. "One More Time," with its attractive female vocals, does provide a nice change-up from the easy snapping tedium of "Jonesing" and "Lowdown," and the dub version of "All the Ways" turns straw into gold by taking the original track and gently ripping the vocals into gossamer shreds, which fall gently and beautifully around the original rhythm track. But nothing can redeem the sophomoric lyrics and whiny singing on "Slipping of Time," or the simply awful "Do It Right." Not recommended. ~ Rick Anderson
PRESSSOUL EXPRESS – “jazzy soul heaven rich in percussion and wah wah guitar.”SOULTRACKS.COM – “Poet's Walk is a joy from start to finish and is a must-have for lovers of soulful jazz.”BLUES AND SOUL – “…Pondel & Rosenstein provide subtle, groove-based backups for Saunders soul-drenched vocals…”SAVE OUR SOUL – “Moments of excitement and suspense are altered with spells of relaxation in this poetical urban music landscape. Poet's walk might turn out to be one of those albums that is timeless.ECHOES – “…an absolutely blinding piece of work…whoever it sounds, or doesn’t sound like. It’s hypnotic, utterly absorbing, soulful mood music of the kind that you play for years and years. An in “Jonesin’” it has one of the year’s best musical trains of though so far. Marlon Saunders and his mates are magicians.”FM MAGAZINE – “Jazzhole's retro vibe is a blend of bohemian acid jazz and ...
