Who will emerge as the new president of Tredway Corp.? In a world of power-suited Fredric March and William Holden, heiress Barbara Stanwyck may have the most clout. Robert Wise directs. Based on the novel by Cameron Hawley, EXECUTIVE SUITE is one of the first films to deal with the corporate rat race and all its power business and politics. After the sudden death of its president, a giant furniture company's board members battle for control. Surveying the candidates for the executive position is Julia Tredway (Barbara Stanwyck), the daughter of the firm's founder, the mistress of the recently deceased company president, and the company's chief stockholder. The candidates are competitive, particularly Loren Shaw (Fredric March), who is so ruthless in his quest to reach the top that he begins to blackmail Josiah Dudley (Paul Douglas) and George Caswell (Louis Calhern) into supporting him. Perhaps the only candidate not actively campaigning is the more honorable McDonald Walling, who simply wants to live a good home life with his wife and child. The drama of EXECUTIVE SUITE unfolds with witty, provocative dialogue and brilliant cinematic intercutting among the many characters, which gives the film action even within the confines of its corporate-office setting. The film has no music score, only the sounds found in the business world--such as the Wall Street clock chimes. Nominated for several Academy Awards, this tightly directed, riveting, and amusing film is considered one of Robert Wise's masterpieces. $15.65 Burt Lancaster stars as General James Scott in Frankenheimer's film of Rod Serling's adaptation of Fletcher Knebel and Charles Waldo Bailey's bestselling novel set in the early 1960s. Like much of the American public, Gen. Scott, Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff is unhappy with a nuclear arms pact with the Soviet Union recently signed by President Jordan Lyman (Fredric March). But the extent of Scott's displeasure is not fully understood until his aide, Col. Martin "Jiggs" Casey (Kirk Douglas), finds some messages suggesting that the general and the Joint Chiefs have been planning a military takeover of the government at a top-secret air base in Texas. The plan is scheduled to go into effect ...

$10.29 One of John Ford's most cherished projects, THE QUIET MAN took years to finance but became one of his greatest box-office successes and an enduringly beloved classic. John Wayne stars as Sean Thornton, a retired American boxing champion trying to put tragedy behind him by returning to Innisfree, the bucolic Irish village of his birth. He purchases his birthplace from its current owner, enraging the wealthy and bellicose Red Will Danaher (Victor McLaglen), who had designs on the property. On arriving at his cottage, Thornton finds it being swept out by Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O'Hara), a redheaded vision from whom he steals a not completely unwelcome kiss. After engaging in a subterfuge involving a horse race, some of the locals manage to get the disgruntled Red Will ...

$9.79 Moody, atmospheric, and bordering on the surreal, this thriller was intended by legendary director John Huston (THE MALTESE FALCON, MOULIN ROUGE) to be an allegory for the repressive American government during the red scare. Though this point was ultimately missed by audiences of all political persuasions, the film nonetheless remains a masterpiece of the suspense genre. Jennifer ...

$10.29 DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK is John Ford's first film in Technicolor (which recently perfected far richer shadings of color than had previously been possible), and the director uses it to stunning effect. The film stars Henry Fonda as Revolutionary War-era farmer Gilbert Martin, who, in 1776, has returned with his well-born wife, Lana (Claudette Colbert), to his rustic cabin in the increasingly dangerous Mohawk River valley. At first unaccustomed to the harsh physical challenges of frontier life, Lana adjusts to the work at hand and is soon able ...

$14.39 Lindsay Anderson, working again with Malcolm McDowell and Robert Sherwin, continues his comic comment on corruption in British society when Mick Travis (Malcolm McDowell), the school boy from IF. . ., sets out, like a modern Candide, to make his way in the business world. Anderson stretches the boundaries of cinema with an eclectic use of movies within movies, silent-film-style title cards, surreal fantasies, actors playing multiple parts, and a live soundtrack. Alan Price appears on screen singing several songs. In the lyrics to one song he sings, "Someone has to win in the human race, if it isn't you, then it ...
