This breathtaking, erotic tour de force from Stanley Kubrick depicts a middle-aged man's (James Mason) strange passion for a nubile nymphette (Sue Lyon) Features Peter Sellers and Shelley Winters. Year: 1962. Director: Stanley Kubrick. Humbert Humbert, a middle-aged professor, becomes totally infatuated by Lolita, a nubile and flirtatious teenage girl. His infatuation grows into sexual fixation, leading him to woo Lolita's mother, Charlotte, in an effort to be near the object of his desire. Dating culminates in marriage, but Lolita's mother eventually learns the truth about Humbert's affections for her daughter.
Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov's controversial LOLITA is a wicked satire of sexual obsession, sadomasochism, and fetishism. When mild-mannered professor Humbert Humbert (James Mason) arrives in the small town of Ramsdale, New Hampshire, he is immediately set upon by his landlady, Charlotte Haze (Shelley Winters), and her adolescent daughter, Lolita (Sue Lyon). Although Humbert gets involved with Charlotte, it is Lolita with whom he becomes obsessed. When Charlotte sends her daughter away to summer camp (the aptly named Camp Climax), Humbert becomes consumed with jealousy. He finally takes Lolita out of camp and heads out alone with her. He is pestered along the way by Clare Quilty (played magnificently by Peter Sellers), who threatens to expose him. But nothing can break the hold Lolita has over Humbert.
From the opening credits sequence--a close-up of a man's hand (with a wedding ring) carefully polishing a young girl's toenails--Kubrick's biting, darkly comic LOLITA burns with sexual energy as it follows the debasement of an intelligent, worldly man in a series of carefully choreographed long takes that boil over with psychosexual tension. Although little physical contact is shown, Kubrick hints at it beautifully, especially in the drive-in scene in which both Charlotte and Lolita grab on to Humbert's hands. And yet given the serious nature of the subject matter, Kubrick pauses long enough to include a riotous slapstick scene of Humbert and a bellhop struggling over a cot as Lolita sleeps quietly on the bed, as well as Quilty playing Ping-Pong with a seemingly endless supply of balls. Stanley Kubrick's highly controversial masterwork is a fascinating look at pedophilia and sexual taboos that lead to obsession and murder. Theatrical release: June 14, 1962.
LOLITA marked the film debut for Sue Lyon after an exhaustive search for the right actress.
Rated BBFC X by the British Board of Film Censors--meaning no one under 16 was permitted in theaters.
Director-screenwriter-producer Stanley Kubrick, whose career was launched by the film PATHS OF GLORY, made LOLITA in 1962. He did, however, have to dance around those censors up in arms over what they thought was the inappropriate sexual objectification of a young girl by a man many years her senior. Kubrick had to make adjustments to appease motion picture authorities. For example, he tried to mollify censors by changing the preteen 12-year-old girl of Vladimir Nabokov's novel, on which the film is based, to a pubescent teenager, 14 years old.
Estimated budget: $2 million.
The film was shot in 88 days.
Additional films with this theme include: Elia Kazan's BABY DOLL; Louis Malle's PRETTY BABY; and Woody Allen's MANHATTAN. Adrian Lyne revisited the story with his 1997 LOLITA, a film that was similarly blocked from widespread theatrical distribution.
The original script, written by Nabokov, wasn't used, though it's reprinted in book form. James B. Harris and Kubrick rewrote the screenplay--and encouraged Peter Sellers to improvise much of his part.
The movie that is playing at the drive-in when Charlotte and Lolita both grab on to Humbert is THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing.
The character name Vivian Darkbloom is an anagram for Vladimir Nabokov.
The poem Humbert reads to Lolita is Edgar Allan Poe's ULALUME.
The sexual references even include the name of the summer camp Charlotte goes to--Camp Climax for Girls.
Peter Sellers's portrayal of Dr. Zempf is very similar to his portrayal of Dr. Strangelove two years later.
The books Humbert gives to Lolita are THE HISTORY OF DANCING and James Joyce's PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN.
Bob Harris composed the theme song.
Laurence Olivier, Marlon Brando, and David Niven were considered for the part of Humbert Humbert, and Tuesday Weld was considered for the part of Lolita.
Sue Lyon was 14 at the time the film was made. In the book, Lolita is nine at first; she is already a teenager when the film begins.
Kubrick and James B. Harris bought the rights to Nabokov's novel for $150,000.
One ending that was considered was to have Humbert and Lolita get married in a state that allowed young people to wed; this ending was considered in order to appease the censors.
Peter Sellers disguises himself as a number of different characters in the film; in Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove, he actually takes on a number of separate roles.
Adrian Lyne's remake ended up going straight to cable as no distributor would pick it up because of its sexual content.
Once again Kubrick includes a scene involving chess, as he did in THE KILLING and even SPARTACUS. (In the epic battle scene, the Romans line up in what appears to be a chessboard design.) Lolita Quotes/Excerpts: "Are you Quilty?"--Humbert Humbert (James Mason)
"No, I'm Spartacus. Have you come to free the slaves or somethin'?"--Quilty (Peter Sellers), in a reference to Kubrick's classic 1960 film
"Hum, you just touch me and I--I go as limp as a noodle. It scares me."--Charlotte (Shelley Winters)
"Yes, I know the feeling."--Humbert Lolita Reviews: "...LOLITA reminds us what a remarkable actor Mason was in his range and insight into the characters he played, and Winters is hilarious yet oddly touching..."
-- Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times "[A] deadpan lead Sue Lyon plays amusingly off the typically intense vocal cadences of James Mason, who is in top form."-- Mike Clark, USA Today

Lolita Movie Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) One of Kubricks greatest films Lolita is a magnificent piece of cinema and is probably Stanley Kubrick's 4th greatest achievement. Even though it got mixed reviews, it is still such a huge success and seems to get better with each passing year. It is a breathtaking and haunting film which deals with sexual desire and obsession. It employs elements of comedy, humor and romance which make it a classic masterpiece up until this very day. James Mason and Sue Lyon deliver outstanding performances and give out great delivery of dialogue and also allow the audience to find the story believable, because at that particular time the subject Kubrick was studying in the film was very taboo. Lolita is a magnificent film with great performances, chilling sequences, magnificent storytelling and great timing. After watching this Kubrick classic, you will never forget that lovely, lyrical, lilting name of Lolita. "How did they ever make a movie like Lolita". You want to know how? Because Kubrick is a genius that will push the edges of cinema to prove he is better than everyone else. Submitted by Joey 34 (L.A California) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Lolita review
$9.69 Originally famed for its sexual frankness, Bernardo Bertolucci's LAST TANGO IN PARIS has managed to endure due to its sophisticated storytelling and brave lead performances. Marlon Brando incorporated details from his own life into the character of Paul, the globetrotting American who finally settled into a marriage and proprietorship of a fleabag hotel in Paris. But when his wife commits suicide, Paul goes into an existential tailspin. One day, while wandering through an apartment that is available for rent, he encounters Jeanne (Maria Schneider), a lovely Parisian girl (she's 20 to Paul's 45) who is also viewing the apartment. The two become intimate and have a heated affair, carried on without names, in the apartment where they first met. While Paul clearly hopes to forget about his wife, Jeanne is simply overwhelmed by her fiancé (Jean-Pierre Leaud, in a somewhat Bertolucci-satirizing role), a filmmaker who wants her to be his subject and inspiration. Nothing is taboo in their relationship, but confrontation comes when Paul breaks the spell of impersonality. Brando's monologue beside his dead wife has sent many a film student into a paroxysm of pleasure in this groundbreaking erotic drama from acclaimed director Bertolucci (THE CONFORMIST, THE LAST EMPEROR).

Lolita DVD
$13.59 SPARTACUS, based on Howard Fast's popular novel, is Stanley Kubrick's glorious masterpiece about a slave uprising in Rome in 70 B.C. Kirk Douglas, who also served as executive producer, stars as the title character, a man born of a slave woman and a slave master who has known nothing but chains his entire life. After being forced to put on a gladiator show--that almost leads to his death--for wealthy Romans (including a marvelously conniving Laurence Olivier as the power-hungry Crassus), Spartacus leads a slave revolt across Italy that soon has thousands marching on Rome. Meanwhile, he has fallen in love with the beautiful Varinia (an effervescent Jean Simmons), pledging his life to her.
Douglas assembled a fabulous all-star cast for the film; in addition to himself, Simmons, and Olivier, terrific performances are turned in by Charles Laughton as the curmudgeonly senator Gracchus, John Gavin as the young Julius Caesar, Tony Curtis as Antoninus (a "singer of songs," with all lines delivered in a beautifully thick New York accent), and especially Peter Ustinov, an Oscar winner for his portrayal of the businessman Batiatus, who always wants to know what's in it for him. Blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo's melodramatic script and Alex North's thrilling, soaring score add a majesty that helps make SPARTACUS one of the finest costume epics to ever come out of Hollywood.

| | Shane DVD (1953)
Lolita movie DVD
$6.95 George Stevens' classic Western, adaptated from the Jack Schaefer novel, stars Alan Ladd in the title role. Riding the ranges of Wyoming's Grand Tetons, Shane stops at the farm of homesteader Joe Starrett (Van Heflin) just before Ryker (Emile Meyer), a powerful and predatory cattleman, arrives with his hired muscle to make the farmer a threatening offer for land that he intends to get by any means necessary. When Shane lets the cattle baron know that his gun will back Starrett if there's any trouble, the grateful homesteader offers the stranger a job as a hired hand, which he accepts. Joe's young son Joey (Brandon de Wilde) is drawn to the quiet stranger, whose difference from the men he knows is confirmed by the accidental revelation of a gunfighter's lightning reflexes. Shane becomes a valuable asset to the farm, but is slowly drawn into the continuing hostilities between the two opposing groups. To complicate matters, Shane feels an unspoken, and unwanted, attraction to Starrett's wife Marian (Jean Arthur). This creates a sense of ambivalence in Joe, whose son already idolizes the gunslinger. Stevens' meticulous artistry imbues the simple Western with the mythic aura of an Arthurian legend, as Loyal Griggs' beautifully composed images provide the canvas for career performances by Ladd, Heflin, Arthur, and de Wilde, in what many regard as the finest western ever made.
