| | Kurious Constipated Monkey CD Kurious Discography of CDs
All songs written or co-written by Jorge Alvarez. Contains samples from "Mysterious Vibes" (as performed by the Black Byrds), "Free Soul" (as performed by John Klemmer), "Stoned Soul Picnic" (as performed by the Fifth Dimension), and "Gibraltar" (as performed by Stanley Turrentine).
Banking on the underground success of his singles "Walk Like a Duck" and "Uptown Shit," Kurious Jorge (the rapper, not the monkey from children's books) released his debut album in early 1994. The album's subtle mix of underground vigor and flavorful party anthems pleased many of hip-hop's discerning aficionados. A guest list that included the Hieroglyphics' Casual and DJ Lord Sear on the mic and a back-from-the-dead Bosco Money from Downtown Science, the Beatnuts, and Pete Nice and Daddy Rich on production gave the album a session feel. The album's wide range of samples, from the Blackbyrds to Fifth Dimension, made for a quirky overall musical effect. Kurious does well to play up the strength of his style, a concise and careful delivery without sacrificing wit. In the end, the catchy single "I'm Kurious" may be the album's only true watermark, but cuts like "Top Notch" and the B-side "Mansion and a Yacht," featuring Sadat X from Brand Nubian, are also bona fide mid-'90s hip-hop jams. ~ M.F. Rolling Stone (4/7/94, p.73) - 3 1/2 Stars - Good Plus - "...Kurious refuses to reduce himself to a stereotype, instead demanding that we focus on getting the jam jumping...." Vibe (2/94, p.106) - "...a 23-year old who's not willing to rely simply on his street credibility to get him over....Rappers rarely bring forth such coming-of-age experiences with the kind of candor and vulnerability you might hear from a close friend...." The Source (2/94, p.74) - "...Kurious rocks the mic like a true MC should ....Rap purists and fans of bugged-out freestyle shouldn't hit the snooze button on this one...." Constipated Monkey album
$8.39 Das EFX -- part of EPMD's Def Squad crew, which also included K-Solo and Redman, among others -- made such a wide breakthrough in 1992 with their debut album that their hit "They Want EFX" was even referenced in the lily-white teen serial Beverly Hills 90210. That Dead Serious could have that sort of broad impact and still retain its credibility within the underground hip-hop community says something about its appeal, which was considerable. But the album wasn't just appealing; it was also enormously influential, ushering in an entirely unique rhyming flow that influenced any number of rappers, established and novice alike. What exactly the duo is rapping about is anyone's guess. One thing is for sure: their lyrics are about as far removed from hardcore realism as they could possibly be, and although there are certain elements of boasting, it is so cut up and ...
| | Beatnuts CD (1994)
Constipated Monkey CD music
$9.89 The Beatnuts' first full-length album is as pure a document of raw, hardcore hip-hop circa 1994 as is possible to get. No pop hooks, no slick production, no ballads or lyrics about money and girls. The individual cuts don't really stand out, instead flowing seamlessly into a powerful whole. It's almost a period piece, given the way that hip-hop eventually gave way, as the '90s progressed, to the excessive bling-bling of the Puff Daddy era, but it also sounds strikingly minimalist and stark, which prevents it from sounding too dated. In retrospect, with its emphasis on lean, jazzy beats and lyrical flow, it can clearly be viewed as a harbinger of the underground hip-hop of the late '90s (such as Company Flow and the Def Jux crew), all the more ironic since at the time the Beatnuts ...

| | Main Source Breaking Atoms CD (1991)
Constipated Monkey album
$9.55 Main Source's debut album, Breaking Atoms, is one of the quintessential cult classics in hip-hop history. Underappreciated compared to peers like A Tribe Called Quest, Gang Starr, or even Brand Nubian, the album probably doesn't get wider acclaim because it was recorded for the ill-fated Wild Pitch label, and thus remained out of print for much of the time its reputation was spreading. Group focal point the Large Professor is a fine rapper, but the album's legend rests more on his production -- he debuts one of the most influential styles in hip-hop here, popularizing a number of now widely imitated techniques. Luckily, you don't have to know how to operate an SP-1200, or exactly what panning, chopping, and filtered basslines are, to appreciate the vibrant-sounding results. His intricately constructed tracks are filled with jazz ...

In the course of one concert you may hear the influences of salsa, cha cha cha, soukous, highlife, reggae, contemporary jazz and rock. The concept for this band originated in 1987 in San Diego, Ca by band leader Bill Macpherson. Bill was doing a Master's program at SDSU after graduating from the esteemed Berklee College of Music. He had been raised in the Congo by medical missionary parents and had been blessed to hear many African music styles there. As he began to form and compose for this band it was a natural extension to incorporate many world music influences. Personnel-wise Native Vibe has drawn from top musicians from the USA, France, Brazil, Venezuela, England, Mexico, Ghana, Benin, South Africa, Denmark and Camaroon. ...
