| | Mt Hood Jazz Band I'm Still Here CD Mt Hood Jazz Band Discography of CDs
Most college stage bands feature enthusiastic ensembles and weak soloists. That is to be expected because, although the students have been well trained in reading music and playing together as sections, it takes time to develop one's own voice as an improviser. However the Mt. Hood Jazz Band is a different case altogether. On I'm Still Here, they not only sound like a professional jazz orchestra in their ensembles, but they feature consistently creative and inventive solos. Certainly no one listening to altoist Max Bryk solo on John Coltrane's "Grand Central" is going to think of him as a mere student. And while three pros (trombonist Stan Bock, trumpeter Thara Memory, and Nancy King who sings "I've Got You Under My Skin") are heard one time apiece, their presence, while welcome, was not needed to make this a very musical and surprising set. Quite a few players have opportunities to solo and none sound like teenagers or beginners. The arrangements of such tunes as Carl Saunders' "I'm All for You" (based on "Body and Soul"), John Clayton's "I Be Serious 'Bout Dem Blues" (which has solo space for eight players), and Phil Kelly's "The Refrigerator" are also added pluses. All in all, I'm Still Here (a title that is never explained) is one of the strongest college band records of 2007. ~ Scott Yanow

Long considered one of, if not the classic album from the Modern Jazz Quartet, European Concert defines them simultaneously as a recording entity as well as a working band. MJQ presented jazz in the context of a formally structured environment, much like a chamber group in the classical context. Within the band, the groove of Milt "Bags" Jackson's vibes met the solid swing of Connie Kay's drums, the funky strut ...

| | Chico Freeman Lenox Avenue Breakdown CD (1978)
I'm Still Here CD music
$13.49 In addition to having excellent cover art (an illustrated cityscape in which a giant saxophone--complete with windows, a doorway, and stoop--takes its place among the neighboring buildings), LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN is also a dynamic, unjustly overlooked jazz album. Prodigiously talented as an instrumentalist and composer, alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe was one of the most innovative jazz ...
| | Interpreters Back In The U.S.S.A. CD (1997) (Import) Germany
I'm Still Here music CDs
$16.09 This trio is from Philadelphia? Back in the U.S.S.A. was actually recorded in London, and every band who this jacked-up pack of power pop punksters hints at appears to be British, both of old and recent vintages. Their older 7" single (the B-side of which, "Dogskin Report," is included here) was produced by mod legend Shel Talmy, the man behind the desk for the early smashes by the 1964-1966 Kinks, Who, and Easybeats (among others). So it's not surprising that the Interpreters pay tribute to one of Talmy's biggest hits by filching the signature riff of "My Generation" for the opening of "Ironic...Blowout." But far from a revival of that high-octane sound and style -- though there is a little first-two LPs Jam, Purple Hearts, and Jolt to the ...
| | Negativland Escape From Noise CD (1987)
I'm Still Here songs
$14.69 While the sound collage of Negativland's first three studio albums pointed in the band's ultimate direction, they were really rough sketches compared to Escape From Noise. Escape is a full-on audio assault, more musical than ever, but with tight and well-constructed sound sections thrown in. Instead of simply a collection of sounds and snippets, however, each cut on Escape From Noise picks a target and takes aim. "Quiet Please" takes on market research in the world of radio. "Michael Jackson" is a laundry list of pop stars being charged with creating commercial pop. "Sycamore" turns happy, shiny, new pre-planned communities ...

$15.95 Just as other things do, music looks back to the old to create the new. It's true. Robbie Williams is not the inventor of Swing. But, his album is reminiscent of the famous Rat Pack of the 50's and 60's, which featured none other than Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and old blue eyes Frank Sinatra. The ORCHESTER Franz'L. reuses Schlager (german pop songs) of the 50's and 60's, and breathes back life into what was once so very popular among the young and old alike and was enjoyed at every party. Now you can "re"enjoy and "re"dance these famous and loved melodies again with the latest CD of The ORCHESTRA Franz'L.Songs like "Musik ist Trumpf", "Quando ...
