Tenor saxophonist Pete Mills and organist Tony Monaco make for a very potent musical team throughout Fresh Spin. Although the instrumentation is that of a 1960s soul-jazz organ group, the music, other than two standards ("A Flower Is a Lovesome Thing," a tenor guitar duet, and guitarist Pete McCann's "Cooked Cheese") is comprised of Mills' originals. While he has a big tone, the saxophonist's playing is much more complex and adventurous than that of the usual role models in this setting, such as Stanley Turrentine and Houston Person. The veteran organist Monaco shows a lot of flexibility and sounds comfortable in this often-sparse setting, guitarist Pete McCann has a few fine solos, drummer Jim Rupp is fine in support, and bassist Andy Woodson helps out on three numbers. Rather than emulating the usual soul-jazz bands of the '60s, this is an organ group for the 21st century. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
Personnel: Pete Mills (tenor saxophone).
Additional personnel: Pete McCann (guitar); Tony Monaco (Hammond b-3 organ); Andy Woodson (bass guitar); Jim Rupp (drums).
Down Beat (p.72) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "FRESH SPIN boasts a warmer sound, in part owing to the big, bracing bite of Mills' tenor and partly due to a bottoms-up approach to the CD's sound mix." Pete Mills Fresh Spin Songs Fresh Spin Review

| | Deep Blue Organ Trio Folk Music CD (2007)
Fresh Spin music CDs
$13.85 The Deep Blue Organ Trio call their third album Folk Music -- and they're right; the rootsy, bluesy soul-jazz that they crank out on this CD is kind of a folk music in its way, a handed-down tradition that appeals to the man in the street as opposed to the pundits in the towers. They adhere 110 percent to the style that once was a fixture at inner-city bars everywhere in the U.S.A., established over a half-century before by Jimmy Smith. Organist Chris Foreman doesn't flash his chops in the flamboyant manner ...

| | Mitch Ryder Detroit-Memphis Experiment CD (1969)
Fresh Spin songs
$18.59 Mitch Ryder's voice is in great shape as Steve Cropper takes over the production reigns from industry legend Bob Crewe. There are more than a few digs at Ryder's past in the liner notes, but the music is truly the voice from Detroit meeting the sound of Memphis. The 12 songs here are statements, all clocking in under four minutes and above two and a half. These compact tunes like "I Get Hot" and the Cropper/Levise original "Long Long Time" -- not the Linda Ronstadt hit -- have Ryder/Levise pouring his well-known voice all over the grooves. "Boredom" is the strangest, and prettiest, song in the lot, written by Matthew Fisher, Gary Brooker and Keith Reid of Procul Harum bringing a British progressive pop sound to this rhythm and blues album, to good effect. Island vibes pervade this departure from the expected Mitch Ryder as well as Booker T sound. It's a delight. "Push Aroun'" would be fine for Wilson Pickett but it sounds like early Lou Reed circa Cycle Annie, Ryder's voice smoother than usual, with super little guitar licks bubbling under and over the hot rhythm. Cropper ...

| | Highlord When The Aurora Falls CD (2008)
Fresh Spin CD music
$13.15 HIGHLORD joined together in 1996 with the monicker AVATAR. The band recorded a demo tape featuring the songs eventually released in the first album. Thanks to that tape label Underground Symphony had them sign for its roster, but because of line-up problems the band wasn't able to record the cd.After a while the band reached a new agreement with another label, Northwind Records, to record its debut cd. New singer Vascè joined in and ‘Heir of Power’ was finally recorded and released in 1998.‘When the Aurora Falls...’ was recorded in June 2000 at New Sin Studios and released in January 2001, with the new drummer Luca Pellegrino. The response of the audience and specialized press was enthusiastic and Highlord could take place in the Italian and foreign Metal scene. In 2002 Highlord contributed to Steelborn Records’ ‘Revenge - The Triumph of… Tribute to Manowar’, with the song ‘Thor’, from the album ‘Sign of the Hammer’, featuring ‘Sister Witch’ on the vocals. In that period Vascè left the band sick of playing metal and the new singer Andrea Marchisio joined.
