| | Lionel Hampton Radio Days, Vol. 17: Basel 1953 CD Lionel Hampton Discography of CDs
Vibraphonist Lionel Hampton came to Europe in 1953 with a cast of future bandleaders and star soloists, including trumpeters Art Farmer, Clifford Brown, and Quincy Jones (who doubles on piano, as Dodo Marmarosa failed to make the trip); trombonists Jimmy Cleveland and Buster Cooper; alto saxophonist Gigi Gryce; and drummer Alan Dawson. This 1953 concert is the first of two CDs issued by TCB decades after it was recorded for broadcast by Swiss Radio. Unfortunately, the liner notes don't identify any of the soloists, though Hampton takes the lion's share of the spotlight in this extroverted set, including favorites from his days with Benny Goodman ("How High the Moon," "Honeysuckle Rose," and "Summertime") and the inevitable crowd-pleaser "Flying Home." This volume documents one of Hampton's most promising big bands of the latter part of his career, one that wasn't well documented on record. ~ Ken Dryden
Personnel: Lionel Hampton (piano, vibraphone); Billy Mackel (guitar); Gigi Gryce (saxophone); Quincy Jones (trumpet, piano); Clifford Brown , Art Farmer (trumpet); Benny Powell (trombone); Monk Montgomery (upright bass); Alan Dawson (drums).

Radio Days, Vol. 17: Basel 1953 CD music
$19.59 Dizzy Gillespie is heard leading his big band in a series of live performances during the summer of 1946, recorded by the legendary Jerry Newman, a fan who made historic transcription discs of many groups during the era. Unlike many of the commercial issues that have appeared over the years, Uptown was able to obtain the original discs from Newman's family, so with skilled restoration, the audio is quite impressive throughout this two-CD set. The fidelity is especially great for the horns and reeds, while the rhythm section isn't completely buried as on many such sessions. Some of the highlights ...

A strong collection that presents all of his best -- including a number of songs written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney -- in excellent sound. ~ Bruce Eder & Jeff Tamarkin
The earlier EMI Billy J. Kramer collection At Abbey Road 1963-1966 is actually better than this 29-song collection, in that it contains some fascinating studio outtakes and ranges well beyond the hits, into some real obscurities. But this disc is probably easier to find, and it does touch all of the essential bases and quite a few more -- indeed, this probably has more songs than casual fans (especially in the U.S.) ever thought Kramer recorded, and there's ...

| | Detweiler, Kirk & Friends Songs For The Jesse CD (2007)
Radio Days, Vol. 17: Basel 1953 album
$18.99 'songs for the jesse' is a tribute album compiled as a tribute to the late Jesse Sebastian, who left us November 14, 2006 at age 24. Jesse was a dancer, performer and choreographer, but most importantly a friend to hundreds of people, whose lives he touched with his joie de vivre. Note from the Executive Producer:'songs for the jesse' came into being after Jesse passed away in November 2006. He was one of my best friends and a mutual friend, Paul Hardy, had asked me to help him put together a memorial service for Jesse that was supposed to take place in Hollywood, Florida in December. Unfortunately, the timing was not right, so instead of a memorial service, I decided to take the music I was planning on using and produce this tribute CD and sell it to raise money for his family and the Cole Academy of Dance & Gymnastics in Muncie, Indiana, where Jesse had started his dance training. The artists on this CD had either worked with Jesse at some point, or are friends of mine who most generously donated their tunes and talent on behalf of this production. Please check out their individual websites, noted below. As for the title, one of Jesse's nicknames was "the Jesse." He had told me a story about how he had taught dance to little kids at a studio in his home state of Indiana. One day, he was getting grief from one of the mothers and another little kid came up to her ...
