| | Iron & Wine Shepherd's Dog CD - Import Iron & Wine Discography of CDs
Iron and Wine's last release (not including the collaborative In the Reins EP which featured songs by Iron and Wine's Sam Beam and performances by both Iron and Wine and Calexico together) was 2005's Woman King, a 6-song EP which distinguished itself from its predecessors with a deepening integration of spiraling, dense opuses with intimate confessionals. On The Shepherd's Dog this integration is complete. Sam Beam has confessed to finding spiritual inspiration in Tom Waits' piŠce de r‚sistance, Swordfishtrombones, an album with which Waits upended his previous strategies and forged a new musical language for himself. Recorded by Sam with the assistance of longtime producer Brian Deck and engineer Colin Studebaker, The Shepherd's Dog succeeds in accomplishing a similar cathartic recasting of the artist's intentions. The arrangements here are kaleidoscopic and rich. This version also comes with two bonus tracks, 'Carried Home' & 'Kingdom Of Animals'. P-Vine. 2007. $3.99 The finest example of perfect disco pop, and a record that should be prescribed to musical snobs and manic depressives. The album is a true ambassador of what pop music can be. Jackson whoops and dances through a suite of unforgettable melodies that should be danced to with a smile on your face. Each track offers at least one musical hook, whether it is the beauty of 'Human Nature' (who can resist the 'dada dada da ...

Shepherd's Dog album
$17.95 Any Sex Pistols audio from the 1970s has been held in reverence because of the lack of recorded output from the band. Countless live bootlegs, B-sides, and lost tracks have popped up on albums since their self-destruction in the late '70s. Anarchy in the UK: Live at the 76 Club, one of the many live albums, is taken -- as the title suggests -- from a much-bootlegged show at the 76 Club in England. Featuring bassist Glen Matlock (who is light years better than Sid Vicious) and a very young Johnny Rotten on vocals, the band was just starting to grow into their skin and make some hardcore punk rock at this point. Many covers fill out the set, but early favorites like "Submission" and "Anarchy in the UK" appear in virtually the exact same form they would on Never Mind the Bollocks Here's the Sex Pistols. The sound quality is rough, with the drums blurring into one percussive mess while the guitar bleeds harsh treble throughout the recording. The band seems relatively low key on this album, holding their barbed insults and stage antics while delivering a non-stop barrage of classic punk rock. This makes for some good renditions of the tracks, but also points out the obvious flaws in the sound. There was never a truly great Sex Pistols live document, but at least this offers some rare tracks and a view of the band before the infamy and back-stabbing set in. ~ Bradley Torreano
At last, the final statement on the Sex Pistols' Burton-on-Trent gig from 1976. This release surpasses both prior releases -- The Original Pistols Live and The Best of & the Rest of the Original Pistols -- in terms of completeness and even unearths the "lost" track "Satellite." This CD catches the early version of the group during a raw epiphany, which seems to be more appropriate to the punk ethos than the overly polished yet brilliant Never Mind the Bollocks. At this point, Glen Matlock was still the group's bassist, although the fact that he could actually play his instrument, unlike successor Sid Vicious, had no audible impact on this gig. The sound is slightly muddy but overall very good -- such a seminal gig by punk pioneers would sound odd in pristine form. There have been many posthumous live shows released by the band, ranging from their last official gig to the re-formed Filthy ...

| | Cole Mitchell Invictus CD (2006)
Shepherd's Dog songs
$12.65 For about a decade and a half, up until a few years ago, singer-songwriter Cole Mitchell fronted one of the most egregiously underappreciated bands in Albuquerque's contemporary rock history. As lead vocalist, lead harmonica player and lead hellraiser of the Saddlesores, Mitchell had an aura about him that was equal parts Merle Haggard, John Lydon, and Bob Dylan. That very same aesthetic is alive, well and all over Mitchell’s second solo venture, Invictus (Wasteland Records). While the sheer raucousness of a live Saddlesores show may never be duplicated, Mitchell channels all the fixin’s – sly wit, sarcasm, cleverness, a deep-seated love affair with classic country music and a rooted sense of all things Americana- into the 10 tracks that make up his latest record, all snug with the voice of an angel who’s been through Hell. ..Michael Henningsen This Cd is a real pleasure both vocally and instrumentaly and for sure one of the best thing I have heard these last weeks. I particularly like you on up tempo songs and i noticed the very good sound and the excellent vocals. I love your voice!... Mike Penard ISA, FranceLOVED THE MUSIC, specially Bye, Bye Bay, Born to Lose and Lucretia Borgia. Very original voice and style and great musicianship... Raúl Tejeiro, AMC Uruguayi just got a chance to throw the cd in my car and give it a good listen yesterday. i was worried it was going to be some overly sensitive, singer-song writer confessional kind of music. i think the title of the cd threw me off ( i really should look "invictus" up in the dictionary). i was so glad to hear some some twanged up guitar. i dig the cd and will be giving it a lot of spins...rob silverberg, wcuw, 91.3 fm , worcester, maI like the recording, sounding live and sincere... Jacques / RCF national networkInvictus was myfavorite Henley poem, "I am the Master of my fate, TheCaptain of my soul" and all that.I realize the cover art was entitled "Invictus" but it tooka lot of chutzpah to call the CD by that title what withTimothy McVeigh and Eric Rudolph quoting the poem as aninspiration. Or maybe the lyrics to "Bye Bye Baby" wereinspired by that?I found the whole CD captivating. I know most musiciansdon't care for comparisons but I kept on thinking the CDkind of a Steve Earle (early Steve) meets Buddy & JulieMiller (Glenda's superb background vocals). I am sure wecan put this Cd to good use at KTEP...Dan Alloway, "Folk Fury" KTEP-FMAuthentic, refreshing and sounds good to my ears...Theo Oldenburg, Alt. Cuontry Cooking, NetherlandsI received the sampler copy of your latest CD and I now take the chance to thank you so much for sending it to me: "Invictus" is a good album in the alt. country stylem sometimes making me think like a sort of Rolling Stones singing country music indeed, and a couple of days ago I started playing it in my radio programme of American folk and roots music here "Cold Light Of The Day" was the first song to be played but more tracks from that album will be ...
